Leaving ends out - How does it cause damage?

Ok I know leaving your hair down can cause breakage if its always rubbing against your clothes, but if you put your hair in a pony tail how will this cause damage to your ends? People say they the air can damage hair. How is this even possible? I mean I haven't taken chances with it. My hair is in a bun almost every day. :lachen: but I still just don't understand how something like air could be so harmful if my hair is moisturized. :ohwell:

Even in a ponytail my ends still rub against my sweater, get caught in things, and etc. Also, in the harsher winter months (or super hot, dry heat of summer) extreme weather can dry even well-moisturized ends out. That's why I usually opt for a bun, when I'm not wearing it out for a particular occasion/reason.
