@ Jasminea: I'm happy that baggying is working for you, I only baggy my ends if they look/feel fried, that's the best way the method works for me. Keep us posted with your progress.

@ IntheMix: Do you ever prepoo with oils or oils mixed with conditioners? I use natural oils for their conditioning properties, different oils do something different so I rotate on a monthly basis. During the period of a month I'll do two HOTs (hot oil treatments), one with a mixture of different oils and one with the oil I'm using that month, in between the HOTs, I'll prepoo with the oil of the month mixed with a moisture or protein conditioner, I find it leaves my hair feeling softer, silkier and in better condition, it also prevents my hair from feeling stripped by shampoo. So far my favourites are carrot oil which is great for growth strength and repair (also good for ends and sealing) and extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) which is great for protection, however there are so many oils out there to try, I have 10 at the minute, when they are done I'll move on to some new ones after noting the ones I love. I hope to find 12 loveable oils that I can use as stated above as my staples.

Tomorrow I'm gonna be trying out my new steamer and splitender, I also managed to get hold of some aubrey organics white camellia conditoner which I haven't used before as it's not readily available over here but I found some on ebay. I'm looking forward to that as the reviews on it have been amazing and I love AO.

I'll let you know how I get on.

HI EVERYBODY!!!

i totally agree with what Angel wrote about the oils in pre pooing! i mix my oils in before i wash with the indian powders and my hair is much softer as a result.

however, lately i have been noticing alot of breakage (thank you, Angel for all of the useful threads!!!)
since i co wash twice a week, i was able to "nip it in the bud", and i must remember to be grateful that my hair has grown an inch since i last measured it three weeks ago, BUT i can't help but think how much more would my hair have grown if i hadn't had the breakage?

what i'm doing now to combat the problem is:
i just ordered some AO HSR and some JASON products as i think those cones may have been the culprit.
i still use the ORS REPLENISHING PAK, which only has dimethicone in it and they say that one is a cone that is water soluble, so it should rinse out, but PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG.
i LOVE ORS, but had to leave the mayonaise alone (though it did wonders for my hair) because surprisingly, it has a big SLS in it....amazed by what one can find when reading the ingredients!
i've taken shikakai out of my amla/brahmi paste, but i don't really know if it's the culprit yet.....i still have some breakage, but it is surely less than 2 weeks ago.

i've also started moisturizing with phyto 7 and sealing with avocado butter more often.

does anyone use phyto or any type of butter?

the phyto is light and easy to work with but the butter can give me stringy, heavy hair if i'm not careful (i tend to be heavy handed when putting good for you types of things on my hair).
but the shine and healthy look that butter gives me keeps me wanting to keep it in.
besides, until this breakage thing is stopped, i don't even want to feel my ends against my neck, much less my clothes collars and back!

do you all agree with the right precautions/repair i'm doing?
any tips would be greatly appreciated !!!

Thanks alot!!!

Hi Grow,
I am definately no expert on combating breakage, but I can tell you what worked for me. I started using a heavier product as well, JCS nourish and shine which is thick like the butters you mentioned. I can only apply it on wash day to seal and maybe one other day during the week. I use lighter oils the other days to seal. JCS N and S really makes my ends super soft but does weigh down my hair. I have had to forgo the bouncy and swing for well moisturized ends to make it through this cold winter.

What you are doing sound like a good plan. Let us know how it works for you.

Hi Team,
I was having some breakage issues for the past two weeks. I used the Nexxus Emergencee and it stopped dead in it's tracks! I know alot of people say this doesn't work for them, but it worked very well for me. I'll be trying this again this weekend. I hope I don't overdo it.

yes, i, too would be willing (tho sadly) to give up the swing for well moisturized hair, at least until the weather is warmer...

in the days since my last post, i've just kept my hair in a pc, combing it only 2-3 times at the most, until i sleep. it's working out better, but going without combing my hair shouldn't have to be a long term solution.

I haven't brush my hair in definitely over 5 years but it's probably more closer to 10 years. I wondered why I ever used a brush in the first place..............my hair gets smooth with a comb and a scarf. It's funny but I have been using the "scarf method" long before LHCF, I just didn't know the "proper" name for it :look:

Btw.........just a quick update..........I relaxed last night and I must say that I am slowly but surely inching my way to MBL. In all honesty when my hair is wet it looks MBL but it's not full or blunt enough for me. I'm happy that I trimmed the 1.25" off the left and right side a few weeks ago in my quest to decrease the W.....hopefully it will be totally blunt by September (I figured in several more dusting sessions and 2 more relaxers).

I joined the Castor Oil Challenge to help increase the fullness/volume of my hair.

How are you finding the castor oil? My hair hates oils if they're just put in and left but we love mixing them in our conditioners and for HOTs. Rubbing castor oil into my scalp and NG (new growth) almost caused me a setback, oils are too drying for my hair although some can penetrate the shaft or they make my hair look lank and greasy :ohwell:

I want to try some JBCO (Jamaican black castor oil) at some stage though.

BTW: no thanks button in your post

Emergencee is a great product. The 2 step aphogee was way to strong for my hair, but I use this the week before every relaxer as my protein treatments.

Sorry about that Grow! JCS is Jane Carter Solutions and she has a butter based conditioner called Nourish and Shine. It is pricey and I have to get online, but one tub of this lasts me for 5-6 months. For fine hair a little goes a long way. It allows me to airdry my hair and it dry soft. I love it! :lick:

I use a natural boar bristle brush only to tame edges for buns or sleek looks. Have had brush for a while and hardly ever find hair in it. I never brush the length of my hair. It would be hair suicide.

My ends do not like to be combed when dry. :nono: Does not matter how conditioned they are, my ends will start breaking more if combed or manipulated a lot. I have found a low manipulation style that I can wear that has become my "signature" style. I roll all of my ends with one large flexirod after moisturizing and sealing nightly and it gives me a great curl at the ends. Curl is much better than when I was trying to get the same look with my curling iron without the heat damage. I just separate the hair with my hands. I only use my shower comb one wash days to detangle.

ORS is a great DC it's a shame about the Dimethicone in it. I avoid cones and nasty ingredients not because my hair doesn't like them but as a choice. As far as I know Dimethicone is one of the worst offenders of cones and is not water soluable, however I do believe that a little of most things in moderation won't hurt, two of my favourite cons have mineral oil and petrolatum in them (nexxus humectress and aphogee 2 min). I have previously used ORS pak midweek to DC on dry hair because I knew I'd be shampooing in a couple of days, it never did my hair any harm and plus IMO the good products far outweigh the bad. Until you posted this I'd forgotten about the beloved ORS replenshing pak. This is also one of the balanced DC's for moisture/protein. The only thing I'd be a little wary of is the phyto moisturizer as I know their products are protein heavy but then I don't like too much protein, if you notice it having an undesired affect as in starts to dry out your hair over time, you could try alternating it with a moisture based moisturizer I've posted some links and attachments re: cones/dimethicone/conditioners

Relaxer Stretching

I started to stretch my relaxer touch ups mainly because my hair never felt as if it was ready for the touch up, I felt like I could leave it longer so I just did. I do three touch ups per year and stretch for 14wks, 18wks and then 20 weeks. This is mainly because these are the most convenient times of the year for me to relax, my birthday, summertime and Christmas/New Year and also allows me to stretch for longer periods of time than I otherwise may have done. Before I switched to 3 x per year I’d stretch anything between 8-12 weeks, usually choosing to relax around the 10th week.

How I manage the different textures of hair is by simply doing everything in sections (other than shampooing). I detangle/comb, moisturize, dust and relax in sections of 4 parted into 4 again. I am very gentle with my hair and only comb it on wash days I’m currently 8 wks post and by the time I get to 10wks, I’ll be ditching my hairbrush until my next touch up as by then I’ll have some serious NG and will not be trying to manipulate it as it is a sensitive area. I also only wear wigs past this stage of my stretch with my hair in rows underneath nice and protected. On wash days after moisturizing my hair and NG with a cream, I’ll oil my NG with Wild Growth Oil (WGO) and that helps to keep the NG soft and conditioned. I can’t say it makes my hair grow though. This is too much to put in one post so I’ll do the self relaxing separately before Sunday hopefully.

Why and how long to stretch

I love love love JBCO!!! Can't say love enough times. My scalp hates it (slightly allergic) but my NG can't get enough of it :yep: I use my fingertips to apply a little to my NG so that I do not get an overload of it. I also use JBCO to seal my ends after moisturizing. It does not dry out my hair but rather keeps it nice and soft.

Hey Angel, To answer your question: No, I've never tried pre-pooing with oils. The way that you've described the way you use them, it makes me want to try it out for myself. Is pre-pooing with oils on the list of topics that we'll be discussing? If not, I'd love for that to be incorporated somehow.

Hey Grow, I use Elasta QP Mango Butter. I love the smell of it and you're right. I've found that I have to be very light with my application otherwise it will weigh my hair down. But I love it and I think it's great. I've never tried/heard of phyto before. What exactly is it?

Hi Team,
I was having some breakage issues for the past two weeks. I used the Nexxus Emergencee and it stopped dead in it's tracks! I know alot of people say this doesn't work for them, but it worked very well for me. I'll be trying this again this weekend. I hope I don't overdo it.
AND
I thought I'd post this thread in relation to Nexxus Emergencee,
http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=37703

I was all about not doing protein treatments anymore until I came across Ceramides = Needing Less Protein?. It seems that there were other ceramide users that were have protein sensitive experiences since using ceramides. And so I've been contemplating using proteins again, just something lighter and maybe only for my wash before and after relaxer routines. Since I'm already using Nexxus a lot I was thinking out using either Emergencee or Keraphix. Have any of you ladies used both of these and could you let me know if you understand the difference between how they work on the hair. I looked at the thread that you posted Angel and I'm not sure that I really understand the protein vs. polymetric discussion.

Ever Been Mad Late on Figuring out a LHCF Acronym?
It's not an updated list but if you search this thread for an acronym you come across you'll likely find the meaning of it. Or if you can't find it, you can post a question in there and someone will likely answer you. HTH

I comb my hair 0 or 2 times a day. If I am wearing my hair down and wrapping it at night then I comb is once in the AM and once at Night to re-wrap. But If I pin curl at night or I'm wearing a bun then I don't comb it at all. Most of my combing happens on wash days when I'm rollersetting my hair.

INTHEMIX08, THANK YOU for all of the helpful information!!!!!!!!!!!

in reference to the phyto 7, it is: (from the webiste i got it from: salonskincare.co.uk)

Daily Hydrating Cream with 7 plants
A genuine "day cream" for hair, PHYTO 7 is a unique plant-based formula consisting of seven plant extracts specially selected for their hydrating and regenerating properties (Calendula, Sage, Burdock, Willow, Soybean, Rosemary and Althea). Its creamy, non-greasy formula works to enhance the natural protection of dry hair by maintaining optimum moisture levels. Your hair regains shine, suppleness and body.

A dab of cream is sufficient for moisturizing the hair
Do not rinse
Does not leave hair greasy
Does not weigh down hair
Facilitates styling.
i can testify that it is not greasy! i like it because it is light, but have used it for too little time to say what a difference it makes.
i also like it because it is cone free and has natural ingredients known for growing and strengthening hair.

the findings i'm reading in the "how to stretch a perm" are really good and i'm trying them.

THANK YOU LADIES FOR SHARING HOW LITTLE YOU COMB YOUR HAIR!!!

after reading that, i realize i've been WAY too harsh with my delicate, fine locks.

i will surely work at treating my hair alot nicer, now....

Relaxing

Hi, here is the info on relaxing – there’s a lot of it. I’ve been self relaxing for 19 years, I’ve changed the way that I do this over the time for convenience, for example, when I used to stretch for shorter periods, I used to relax my hair in four sections, now that I stretch for longer and have more NG to deal with and overlapping issues to worry about I do it in 16 sections (in twists). I am currently using silk elements no-lye sensitive scalp formula but I want to switch over to Mizani butter blends eventually. I usually clarify 3 days before relaxer day and do a heavy protein treatment a week before and a week after the relaxer process. I currently mix castor oil and EVOO into my relaxer, I base my scalp with good old fashioned Vaseline and use roux PC on my already relaxed hair for protection. I apply the relaxer with a spatula and smooth I do before rinsing I’d say it takes me about 15 mins from applying the relaxer to being ready to neutralize. I do a mild protein after I’ve rinsed out the relaxer cream but before I’ve neutralized and I leave the neutralizer to sit for at least 5 mins before rinsing and reapplying, this allows the neutralizer the time to work and means I may only need to shampoo 3-4 times instead of 20-30. I do not relax bone straight, I texlax and still have a curl to my hair.

Hair plans this weekend, anyone?

I'll be clarifying and shampooing. Also, I'll be testing out adding honey and Roux PC to my DC. I'll let you know how that goes. My leave ins will be GVP PM the Conditioner and Chi SIlk Infusion. And of course the usually rollerset.

I am 12 weeks post and planning on doing my pre-relaxer clarification and protein treatment this weekend. I am a little undecided about whether I should relax or continue my stretch. This stretch has been great until this last week. I used a new product that were not good (pantene relaxed hair conditioner). :nono: This product left my hair hard and lifeless, so I have to clarify to get the buildup out of my hair.

I love honey. :lick: It does great things for my hair. I ususally pre-poo with it mixed with a cheap VO5 conditioner. You've inspired me to consider doing a honey + deep conditioner treatment after my clarify. I could use the extra softening to my new growth. The longest I've stretched in past is 12 weeks and planned on relaxing this time at 13. But if I can get my NG to behave again, I may try to continue my stretch for a few more weeks.

Maybe I'll try a rollerset, again from your inspiration InTheMix08! It's been a long time and I need a bit of a change from my no heat styles.
Thanks for the post! You've helped get me back on track to enjoying my hair!

You're welcome, jasminea! I'm in the process of doing my hair now. I've got the rollers in and I'm under the dryer. I'll take pictures of my hair in the morning and post them for you guys.

Congrats on making it to 12 weeks post. That is certainly a major accomplishment. When you relax you're going to have some fabulous progress! I did a 13 week stretch once before and I am hoping to stretch to 12 weeks this time too. I'm at 4 weeks post now, so I've got a ways to go. *FingersCrossed* I'll make it 12 weeks.

How are you ladies doing on your hair care journeys? It's been a while since we have updated with each other.

I just had my relaxer at 13 weeks, THANK GOD! I could not get a comb through my new growth anymore. 12 weeks is max comfortable range, that one extra was a killer but I am very happy with the health and growth of my hair.

My stylist spent the whole time I was there quizing me about my hair regimine and the products I use. After telling me how great my hair was she then insisted I need a trim to keep it growing??? :wallbash: NOT! I don't use any heat on my ends and they look just fine to me.:yep:

What new products, techniques, tools have you ladies used the past month?

Hey!! I was reading to catch up and then it just . . . . ended. Hi ladies. Been on India time - not fun. Missed LHCF. This was the first group I checked up on. My hair is tired, limp, and dirty. I am so ashamed. I hope to get a chance to wash tomorrow. Need my unibrow done too. LOL I so miss taking care of me.

Any pictures, jasminea? :grin::grin:

I've been rollersetting, wrapping and pincurling as usual. I tried to do use flexirods on my dry hair one night :hair: but it didn't work out too well :nono:. The honey and Roux Porosity Control mixed with my DC has been working out very well. My hair feels great and has a healthy sheen to it :lick:. Also, I've been using Chi Silk Infusion (good way for me to get some protein into my regimen, plus I hear it's a good heat protectant) mixed into my Leave-in. So far so good. I forgot to post pictures last time, so I'll have some progress pics for you ladies next week. :yep:

Hi Angel,
Glad to hear that your sister and family are doing better. Trims sounds like a great topic to continue with. I just purchased the splitender last week and used it after refusing to let my stylist trim my hair. Last time she did it I went from APL to shoulder in a few minutes. Never again. The splitender was great, it took off about 1/4 inch and left my ends feeling great. I plan on using it 4 times a year after each relaxer since that is the only time I flat-iron my whole head and the hair has to be straight to use it.

Sorry for the delay, I thought my problem was just internet explorer but that turned out not to be the case. I've had this laptop repaired 3 times in the last year and I thinks it's time to just cut my losses and get a new one, this is a bit of a dinosaur and is literally falling apart.
