I am considering going natural but the only problem is I don't know if I want to do it now because I am a junior in high school and I am scared to be in a battle with my transitioning hair for special occasions. Any tips would be very appreciated. My goal is to be completely natural before graduation
(2010! Yea Baby!) or should I wait until I start college? Do you ladies think it is possible? I am in DESPERATE need for answers! Please!

P.S. I am two months post relaxer.

hey...
i don't know what to say except follow your heart and big chop whenever you are ready. I actually did braids for a month and a half while i researched about haircare then i big chopped.
I was ready mentally and i also knew that I didn't want to fight with the two textures...
HTH

For special occasions you can always get a press. That's what my hairdressers does. In the mean time you can wear spiral curls, bantu knot out, twist outs, braid outs. All kinds of styles. I wish I had been brave enough to even think about going natural in high school, My hair would be so long now.

I tried to go natural in high school and it was difficult. I went for about 5 months using phony-ponies before chickening out. The only advice I can add is to START NOW! If this is something your really want to do, don't wait. You can always get presses/ flat-irons/ weaves for special occasions, but you can't get the time back if you wait until college. Trust me. I am in grad school and I WISH I would have gotten it together back in hs. My hair would be sooo long by now.

Good luck & happy hair growing!

Personally, I say go natural now. You can always get your hair pressed straight for special occasions (or get straw curls to blend the two textures). And you can take this time, before you graduate and go off to college, to learn how to make your natural hair fiyah! In my experience in undergrad, people often re-invent themselves when they go off to school. If you start now then all the awkward growing stages will be behind you by the time you go to college. High school goes by quick (believe it or not) and the new people you meet in college will only know you how you present yourself to them.

I went natural during undergrad in college b/c I wanted to be fully natural before I hit the workforce. I also wanted time to figure out my natural hair so that I could present it in the best light possible (otherwise I might have caved to pressures and relaxed again). I'm in grad school now and am glad I didn't wait any longer to go natural. I wish I had done it sooner (I failed at my first transition attempt).

Good luck to you in whatever you decide to do. ;)

I say go natural now..but no BC... Just grow it out.

I was the opposite. I was natural until I went to college. That's when I got on the creamy crack...

Go natural now, I thought about it when I was in highschool but didnt because of the social pressures of a natural head ;( had I done that I would be a 4 year natural ;). Plus when you get to college youll have 2 years of growth. Like TCATT stated just wear protective styles and enjoy your last 2 years of high school ;) GOOD LUCK

I say go for it! There are lots of cute styles you can do on transitioning hair, braidouts, twistouts, rollersets, etc. And for the big time occasions (prom, senior pics, graduation) you can always flat iron.

I say go for it too! I transitioned in college and there will be special events there too (dances, parties, homecoming etc.). Just learn how to style it now. Straw sets were my best friend when I was transitioning.

Girl just do it now, you are already 2 months into it. Keep going, learn what works for your hair, experiement with different hairstyles and then by the time there is a special occassion you will have hardly any problems.

You've got time and LHCF is here for you when you need help. :)

Hey myxdchiick, I think it's a perfect time for you to natural! At your age is cool because you can get away with more variety of styles and is STILL considered trendy! For your special occasions, just deal with them as they come! You can do so much and so many styles don't limit your thoughts or give up because of "new growth"

Browse other transitioners/naturals albums for inspiration. There are some nicezzzzz one to view! Also, on those special occasions (Prom, Homecoming, etc….) treat yourself to the salon visit and you will be good to go

DON'T GIVE UP GIRLY, I'M WATCHING U!

As a high school teacher in a rural area. I say DO IT!!! I realize where you live but, I personally think that it is an opportunity for you to educate those individuals that may not understand why you are going natural. There are many benefits to being natural and practicing quality hair care. I have influenced close to 50 students to go natural so far because of how I wear my hair. One of my former students cut all her hair off her junior year and wore extensions until she had a cheek length fro. Everyone loved it and her hair was SUPER healthy and FLY. So do not be afraid to embark on this journey it will be wonderful for you and the years ahead.... good luck!!!!

Agreed!!! I absolutely would suggest that you move forward with your transition. Although in the beginning it will get rough but if you really want to be natural and have that versatility, then stick it out. Like SEMO stated, college is a brand new beginning and people will only know what you show them. I am a sophmore in college now and I started my transition the first semester of my freshman yr. It is difficult being away from home not having the security of your regular stylist. So if you start transitioning now, you can learn about your natural hair and how to take care of it. There are so many young ladies here at school and can barely take care of themselves let alone their hair. At least if you start now your hair will always be on point. ;-)

Transitioning is a very individual CHOICE.

This is from a thread I started on a different forum. ENJOY
I know many ladies may want to go for the long term transition and avoid the BC.
This is the route I chose to take.
Yes it can be done. I am currently 18 months post Relaxer.
I have done a few trims but no BC. I just refuse to. I want to hold on to my length because my styles come out better and because me & my husband both prefer long hair.

I have 4a/b Rudy Huxtable hair. Thick and Serious! If I can do this...So can you.
But it does require patience.

Anyway, I thought I would share some long term transitioners albums with all of you for inspiration. You'll have to ask them for their passwords if it is locked. I think it would be in poor taste to provide someone else's password.

I started transitioning during my junior of high school. I was natural for 6 years. For special occasions I usually did braids and it was no worries...like micros or individuals until i had real length. I also wore my hair braided in a nice design and added a phony pony for everyday and eventually added new styles as I went along.

DO IT NOW. get you some kinky twists and transition to your heart's content. i transitioned for a year so i was back to SL stretched by the time i BC'd. i am in college now and i BC'd this summer and i too am one of those people going "dang, if i had done this four years ago i'd have reached my hair goal by now!"
