Puffy roots? Why?

I notice that I usually get puffy/swollen roots whenever I do my hair. I wash (Creme of Nature Argan oil), DC (Silk Elements), blow dry and flat iron. Never fails - Puffy roots after a few days. Exercise and weather are not an issue.

Does this happen to you? Did it happen to you? Any idea why?
Oddly enough my hair only seems to get straighter days later when I get my hair done at the salon. When I do it the roots swell.

That's a good question! Are you natural or relaxed? If relaxed, is that NG thats growing out? That's actually the only time that happens to me is when I have NG. My NG always gets puffy regardless to what I do to try to keep it straight (except for relaxing it). Not sure if this is the same thing going on with you though.

I can never get my hair salon straight unless I have a fresh touchup

I'm natural but I have the Design Essentials treatment. Maybe its just that I cant get my hair salon straight and need to try a smaller flat iron too.

Wow! That's interesting. I have the exact opposite problem. My roots stay straight for days, but my ends get puffy. And you have the DE treatment?! Girl! Hmmm... maybe it is your flat iron. I haven't tried the DE yet, but I use a flat iron spray and a long skinny flat iron. Using those two keeps my hair straight for a few days. Even the ends.

I was going to ask the same thing.... if you sweat that will definitely cause your hair to revert.

Another thing that comes to mind are the size of your sections and the heat setting on your flat iron. I always use medium heat and my hair puffs back up... but when I use higher heat (but never anything over 380) it stays sleeker longer depending on my products. :yep:

Are you wrapping your hair at night? That should keep it sleek for days. But I also sweat during my sleep sometimes, usually in summer, especially if I am wrapping my hair.

Thanks ladies.
I dont sweat in my hair alot at all.
I flat iron with an old Sedu and my new Babyliss Steam iron. Maybe Im not getting the roots straight enough. What kind of skinny flat iron are you ladies using?

@yodie, products, differing techniques, protein, weather, dryness, new growth and under processing can swell the roots. Have you tried using other products to see if they will/won't swell the hair?

Based on what you've mentioned the two things that differ is product (yours vs. salon) and technique (yours vs. salon).

It must be technique and heat levels. They use higher heat at the salon when it comes to blow drying and flat ironing. I'm very heat conscious. I wonder if there is a product that i can use to make my hair straighter and still use less heat.

I pin curl my hair at night.
I use my old Sedu and Babyliss Seam Iron. I might not be getting close enough to the root with these. Can you ladies suggest a skinny flat iron?
I don't sweat in my hair much and i haven't exercised in a few weeks. (SHAME).

It could be the technique that you are using. The bigger factor, however is the products that you utilize. I am natural too and finding out the best combo for you is essential for your blow out. From the shampoo down to the serum.

I use the following:

1) Loreal Sulfate free shampoo
2) Paul Mitchell Humectress
3) Paul Mitchell Skinny or Kerastase Oleo Relax Serun
4) A leave in that doesn't have any aloe Vera (because the serums don't agree with it)
5) Nexxus Heat Protectant

Just dry your freshly washed hair with a t-shirt (to prevent over drying it).

Spray your leave in throughout your hair and evenly distribute.

Put about a nickel size of the serum in your hair, evenly distributed for the roots to the tips, with the Nexxus Heat protectant, focusing more on your ends, since this hair is the newest. The Nexxus heat protectant is really awesome too.

Use the tension blowdrying method to remove about 70% if the water in your hair, pulling your hair taut and aiming the air from your dryer down the hair shaft.

From there, section your hair into four sections, and go, making sure to apply about a dime size of serum to each if the 4 sections before beginning to blow dry.

Make sure you use a paddle brush and a blow dryer with a nozzle on it. You will want to direct the air down the shaft if your hair toward the ends, while moving the hair up and down the shaft.

Once done, go back and flat iron in sections about 1/4 inch thick.

Once done, put a little more serum, and you should be good to go.

Once you are used to it, you will complete this in about and hour to an hour and a half.

Hope this helps.
