What causes excessive shedding? How can you tell if you are shedding too much hair?

Here are a few things I'm aware of that can cause excessive shedding:

A major hormonal change where there is a drop in estrogen like post pregnancy or stopping birth-control pills

A lack of red blood cells to nourish the scalp, meaning iron supplements or eating foods high in iron is needed.

Certain medications

Stress

Stretching out a relaxer too long a period for one's hair.

I've learned that it's normal to shed up to 100 hairs per day.

Another issue to deal with regarding shedding is have you changed your hairstyle to not allow the hair that is normally shed to fall out. When I started wearing braidouts, the hair that I would normally shed in a day was not actually falling out and hitting the ground so when I went to wash my hair, it seemed like a million hairs in the drain. So for that period, I REALLY thought I was losing a lot when it was actually quite normal for my hair.
