What makes a product a heat protectant?

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know what exactly makes a product a heat protectant? What ingredients should you look for in heat protectant products? What natural products (like olive oil) are good heat protectants?

I'm natural and I plan on blow drying my hair so that I can trim my ends. I'm really scared that the heat will destroy my beautiful curls and I want a product that will help protect them.

Thank you in advance.

Valleygirl recommended a heat protectant (which I use and like) called New Image Damage Free conditioner. It's a leave in which contains a heat protectant ingredient called Phyiantriol. You can pick it up a Sallys. Here's a thread where heat protectants are discussed Heat Protectants
