I've only just recently started twisting. As far as products I like Knot Today leave in and shea butter. I do big twists in my hair when I wash/condition and rinse my hair in the twists, then I separate each twist into smaller sections and twist while it's still wet. I haven't tried dry twists yet.

I LOVE knot today.. so you use the shea butter to twist them?

hechangedmyname,
Thank you.

Do you do them on dry or wet hair?

I generally do mine on wet hair, but i do it on dry hair as well. This is a braid out i did, but it looks just like my two strand flat twist out.

What's your method?

Products? I wash my son's hair with moisturizing shampoo, deep condition under the steamer and use Brown gel to twist his hair. :)

What secrets/tips do you have for a new two-strand twister?
Take your time, I like to keep the hair wet, Deep conditioning allows the hair to be soft and manageable.

No..Air dry

Any other stretching techniques?

After letting my twist air dry, I either wear twistouts or redo them smaller for more length.

What secrets/tips do you have for a new two-strand twister?

Finding the right product for your hair that will give you good definition and not cause your hair too look dry/frizzy. Try twisting on wet, dry, and damp hair to see which process provides you with the best looking twist.

Products?

None. Once I shampoo, DC, ACV rinse. I let my hair airdry in plaits, then I undo the dry hair and finger part and twist as show above. I don't apply anything. Once I'm done, I CW so that the hair can shrink and ends get tidier, and so that the twists can drip dry and hang down straight. This also makes them fatten up a bit:

Posted some above. This is a close up of 4 week old (8 washes after) twists:

Do you blow dry before twisting?

I do not.

Any other stretching techniques?

I don't really care to stretch them. If I need to style them, I do wet them so they are easier to stretch into a style, but otherwise, I don't try to wear them long.

What secrets/tips do you have for a new two-strand twister?

Learn to twist my way, twirling/twisting each section first upon its axis before winding it around the other. Also notice in the second clip, I am stretching my hair before I twirl. This keeps strands locked in a detangled state so that undoing is as easy as this:

Very nice, I have the ORS twist and loc and I don't like it much, but I am going to try the Shea butter mix, where do you purchase yours from?
I don't remember which sister on this board told me not to toss it to the trash, I will try it again.

I just blend unrefined shea butter, coconut oil, castor oil, and EVOO together until it's this creamy consistency. Then I store it into a container and use daily. I just started using the ORS on a more consistent basis recently after getting really good definition and lasting twistouts.

What's your method?
I don't do the whole twirling thing, I just twist tightly until I can't anymore, and then I twirl the very end.
Products?
I will normally cleanse and condition the hair before twisting, and then put in a creamy leave-in/moisturizer and seal with my oil of choice. And then I will apply my KCCC or vitale setting lotion(which I am really loving).
Pics? (had to add it in...)
I don't have any pics, but if I follow through with my plans to do a mini twist set this weekend, then I will add to this post and/or make my own thread.
Do you blow dry before twisting?
I don't like dry twists because I need my curl on the ends of my hair to keep my twists from unraveling. So now, and i'm not using any heat on my hair for the summer.
Any other stretching techniques?
For my mini twist set, I plan on slathering my hair in creamy Shea butter, and sealing with Shea oil, banding the hair and air dry. Might sit under the dryer to speed up the process. And from there, I will use the stated method above.
What secrets/tips do you have for a new two-strand twister?
Part in sections of four, so you can see your progress, and not get discouraged from finishing the set. And seal your ends good, or use a heavy moisturizer on your hair and especially the ends, if you plan on keeping them in for a long time.

What's your method?
I DC, wash, and condition in 8 braids (4 on each side) and allow my hair to airdry partially or fully before twising (depends on my schedule). I fingerpart or use a comb to part rows, but then just grab and twist for each individual twist. I apply product, comb through with my Ouidad comb, and then two-strand twist to the ends. I don't twirl before twisting the 2 strands together, I just twist the strands tightly all the way to the ends.

Products?
I use Qhemet Detangling Ghee on each of the 8 big sections. For each twist, I use either the Qhemet Burdock Root Butter Cream, Qhemet Amla & Olive Heavy Cream, or Oyin Whipped Pudding on my twists. I usually leave my twists in for several days before untwisting for a twistout, and everyday I spray on either Oyin Greg Juice or my own moisture spray.

Pics? (had to add it in...)

Back of my twists...I hate that part in the middle...grrrr

Twistout done on small twists that I kept in for about a week.

Do you blow dry before twisting?
Not anymore. When I first started twisting I did, and I didn't notice a difference in how my twists came out. Its easier now for me to twist on damp or air-dried hair.

Any other stretching techniques?
I haven't tried banding yet, I don't think my hair is long enough, but its something I'll be trying in the future. I follow the never loose & wet technique because my 4a immediately shrinks down into very dense coils the minute that moisture hits it. Its easiest for me to keep it stretched in braids for washing.

What secrets/tips do you have for a new two-strand twister?
Just try out different styles & techniques. And if you don't like how your twists are laying when your done, you can always pin them up. Pinning up my twists have saved me when I didn't like how my twists hung.

What's your method?
- apply Roux 619 leave-in
- apply Trader Joe's Nourish Spa mixed with water as my leave-in (1 to 3 ratio in spray bottle)
- I apply a little gel to my roots
- twist hair into about 20 two-strand twists (you may part the hair with your fingers for an unstructured look)
- apply a little coconut oil to the length and ends of the twists
- I wrap each individual twist into a "twisted" bantu knot (this allows my roots to dry straight & smooth)
- blowdry my roots on low setting
- when roots are dry, take down the knots and allow the length of the twist to air dry
- if you want a very curly look, leave the knots in (it will take a very long time to air dry)
- for twistout, when hair is dry, undo the twists and fluff

Products?
- Roux 619 leave in, the yellow one
- Trader Joe's Nourish Spa mixed with water as my leave-in (1 to 3 ratio)
- Regular twists - a little gel in the roots
- Flat twists - no gel
- Coconut oil as a finisher

Sorry.

Do you blow dry before twisting?
No, I twist on dripping wet hair.

Any other stretching techniques?
- Stretching relaxers - no, I'm natural
- Stretching natural hair - banding, flat twists, or blowdrying on low.

What secrets/tips do you have for a new two-strand twister?
Take your time and keep a spray bottle with water or your leave-in handy to keep your hair from drying out.

Twist on 80-90% dry, stretched, moisturized hair.
Section off a horizontal section. Grab and go in that section.

Products?
Whipped shea butter (shea butter, coconut oil, aloe vera, olive oil).
KCCC on the ends.

Pics? (had to add it in...)

Do you blow dry before twisting?
Definitely not. I airdry until 80-90% dry.

Any other stretching techniques?
I stretch in big detangled braids. Wrap my edges with a scarf until airdried and flat.

What secrets/tips do you have for a new two-strand twister?
*Twirl then twist. Keeps frizz and puffy roots at bay.
*Moisturize your hair beforehand so that you don't have to moisturize as you twist. Cuts down on styling time.
*Detangle well ahead of time so that you don't have to comb as you twist. Cuts down on styling time.

Twist on wet/damp hair.

Products?
Leave in my regular conditioner (Tresemme Naturals Nourishing Moisture) or Jane Carter Wrap & Roll/Ecostyler combo also works well.

Do you blow dry before twisting?
nope

Any other stretching techniques?
I comb each section before twisting with a seamless double ended comb. It's the one I got when I ordered WEN.

What secrets/tips do you have for a new two-strand twister?
It gets faster once you get used to it. It used to take me 2 hours to twist my hair.

Pix are in my album. I take the twists out and pin them up into a bob to go to work.

I wash or co-wash, DC, slather on my moisturizer and then get a bunch of duckbill clips to section off the hair and start from back to front on damp hair. I seal with my oil mix.

I part my hair in the style that I want the twists to be. For me this is usually straight down the middle.

Once I'm done with all those twists (about 4 hours later if the kids are asleep), I gather them all on each side of the part and make two big french braids going straight back. I keep it this way about 10 or 11 days, taking the french braids down twice in that time to re-apply moisturizer and oil and re-braiding afterwards.

Twists are my staple style!!! I get so excited about them, I think I am the queen of twists. I've been wearing them since 2001 and I wore my hair in twists 90% of the time until about 2 years ago.

What's your method?
I'm not sure what you mean by this one. I learned to twist by reading Pamela Ferrell's book Let's Talk Hair. I twist on dry hair. I wear them for about 2-3 weeks then wear a twist out. My bigger twists sometimes only last a week. It takes me any where from 3.5-8 hours depending on the size of the twists.

Products? I apply leave in or moisturizer then twist w/shea butter.

Pics? (had to add it in...) see attachments at end

Do you blow dry before twisting?
I prefer to but I am currently on a personal no heat challenge

Any other stretching techniques? Since I"m not currently using heat I ai dry in braids then twist.

What secrets/tips do you have for a new two-strand twister?
Twisting is all about placement. To avoid a scalpy look and make the hair look thicker I window pane my twists. Meaning the 2nd row of twists do not directly line up w/the first row but instead are staggered in between. I also roll my twists when I want them to be bouncy.

What's your method? I just recently started two strand twisting my hair. I do the roll twist method.

Products? This last time I did it using ORS lock and twist gel. This was used after hair had already been previously moisturized by my curl activators. I sprayed my hair with Infusium just to dampen it, then proceeded twisting with the ORS. I keep JBCO near by to seal my ends while twirling to make sure they form a slight curl.

Pics? (had to add it in...)

Do you blow dry before twisting? No I twist on damp or wet hair for the most definition.

Any other stretching techniques?

What secrets/tips do you have for a new two-strand twister?
For best twistout results, I have found for my length hair that the smaller the twists, the better the results. Also leaving the twists in longer helps with better definition.
This is my first set of twists. Since then, I have made them even smaller which I have in right now.

My twist out.

I normally wash my hair shampoo (every few wks) then condition (now with Yes to Carrots). While Im in the shower I section my hair off into four puffs. Then I detangle each puff with a lot of conditioner and do bigger two strand twist and put them back into four puffs.
Next I wash out the conditioner and put on my leave in. Then I set up shop on the floor and pop in my movie.
Around me I have metal clips, as spray bottle with water and a little conditioner, my shea butter mix, and scissors (just incase I get a tangle I dont pull at it I cut it).
Then I start with the back first and work my way up. I twist my hair all the way down to the end and keep on twirling the ends. My hair is so curly that I just have to keep on twirling that it stays.
I only twist my hair dripping wet.

Products?
Shampoo whatever I have in the shower
Conditioner either Hello Hydration HH or Yes to Carrots
Leave in: Jessi's wkly curly conditioner and Deva care one
Moisturizer: Shea mix (my sisters mix so Im not for sure what all she puts up in there). And a whole lot of water

Pics? I think there is one in my siggy right after a fresh two strand twist
and also my fotki is open to public

Do you blow dry before twisting?
No, I twist on dripping wet hair.

Any other stretching techniques?
Natural but when I was stretching I would do braidouts a lot once my hair hit a certain length btwn natural and relaxed

What secrets/tips do you have for a new two-strand twister?
Use a lot of water and take your time and learn patience. It took me 7-8hrs the first time I started twisting and my hair was like supper short. Now it takes me 3-4hrs and my hair has grown a little.

In the front of your hair and on the front sides. Your hair will look fuller if you do slanted or diagonal rows instead of parting straight back.

My best twist outs for my 4a 3c hair is from using Tousle me Softly Finishing Touch Cream.

I use it on wet hair after I co wash and do about 20 two strand twists. For second day hair I reapply a small amont on dry hair and retwist in larger sections about 10 twists. and go to bed. This gives m hair shine and a tight curl for second & third day hair. (click for larger view)
(second day hair)

(second day hair)

(third day hair)

By the way I love this stuff you can buy it anywhere from Ulta to Walgreens and it only costs $5.99. I use about two to three jars of this stuff a month. It smells great and is cheaper than Kinky curly and Curly Pudding yet yields the same results.

Do you blow dry before twisting?

I usually do, but I am trying to avoid heat now. September 2011 was the last time I used heat on my hair.

Any other stretching techniques?

After washing, conditioning, and detangling my hair, I put my hair in 4-6 plaits to airdry. I wrap a microfiber turbie twist towel over my hair to speed up the drying time. Once dry, I unravel the plaits, apply oil, and gently comb out my hair. Then I proceed to twist my hair starting from the nape and working my way toward the front of my hair.

What secrets/tips do you have for a new two-strand twister?

No secrets. I'm trying to get back on the twist bandwagon myself. Just try to be patient and gentle with your hair at all times!
