My nape is not very long at all. I have a short neck and I live in Canada, so I have to wear a jacket most of the year. As a result, my nape suffers. My nape is just begining to grow back. It's about 3 inches long.

I was wondering what the average length is for a nape. Please let me know. I noticed that my hair is just not a thick as it use to be. I'm thinking that maybe if my nape grows long, this may add to the fullness of my hair

The hair at the nape of my neck is pretty much the same length as the rest of it. My shortest hair is in front, probably from when I used to have bangs.

My nape is about 4 inches long but before joining it was ate up girl...now it's growing because I keep it moisturized and I do not wear my buns tight anymore...oh and I perm it last along with my sides...it's growing in rather fast:)

My nape it the same length as the rest of my hair, a little past APL, my front is a little shorter than the rest. Maybe wearing more updo's will help that area come in better and quicker.

Hello fellow Canuck :) I live in AB, so I totally understand about the brutal weather.

My nape is about 7 or 8 inches. It used to be the shortest & most frustrating part, now it's the longest and softest. Don't ask me how, but my hair just did a 180 on it's own. The back mutated into a 3c, but the rest of my head may as well be a 4z . Anyway, I try to keep my hair braided during winter (I prefer a style w/ cornrows, like a weave), so even with all the toques, scarves, and jackets, there's not as much friction. Good luck!

I've noticed that my nape has kind of been breaking off lately. It's about 3" right now. I think it's because my stylist conrowed my hair really tight with extentions this summer, and I left them in (without redo-ing the back row) for a month.

I don't want to braid my hair this winter like I usually do, and will try wearing silk scarves under my hats.

My nape is as long as the rest of my hair. It has only been that way since I have been natural. All my relaxed years my nape broke off and was never as long as the rest of my hair.

I'd say mine is about 3 inches. I have a chin-length layered bob, so my stylist regularly trimmed my nape area and it never got a chance to grow out. Since I'm trying to grow out my hair, though, I'm taking care to moisturize and massage my "kitchen" to help it along.

My napr area is probably about 1 inch. I got it shaved off in May, and do to mishandling and a scissor happy stylist, it broke off and had to be trimmed down again in August. I've been babying it with deep conditioning treatments and it has definitely filled in allover.

Thanks so much ladies for responding. Keep the post comming. The bad news so far is that my nape is short. The good news is it can grow long (hopefully) like others members on the board.

I think my nape used to be as long as my hair. But that was soo long ago that I dont really remeber. All i know is the jackets, scarves and hats eat my hair. This year I'm going to tuck my collar in, and avoid harsh materials on the nape.

Again ladies, keep the responses comming

That is the back the kitchen right? My nape usually is short then grows back fast in August it was 1 inch long now its 2.5 inches long plus I have close to 3/4 of NG but I hope it catches up to the rest of hair when I reach APL.:)

hmm....who said most black folks kitchens are usually the loosest of the naps.

my nape area is the shortest part of my hair - it's about 4 inches long and goes up from my neck to about an inch into my scalp. it's also the nappiest, doesn't match anything else growing out of my scalp and the only part of my head i can claim as 100% natural :D

it's never been long even when i was a little kid, it's about 3-4 inches of coily defiant beedabee tryntadabee brats that require ALOT of extra TLC :p.

Mine is about 6 inches, but it's still pretty thin. It used to get really nappy a day after my relaxer, but now it stays straight and smooth. I think it's from moisturizing it and not wrapping my hair anymore.

mine never grew long, but since i started on this board its been growing, its long AND strong. its brastrap length with the rest of my hair.

nape is in the longest sectionof my hair the middle back part, the front is the shortest

We must be twins because my nape area is just awful. I'm natural but I'm seriously considering perming that one area. It will not grow, it has got to be the UGLIEST thing I have ever seen. No ponytails, no updos nothing that exposes my nape area. It is embarresing and hard to deal with.

My nape was completely gone last year when I had a particularly damaging relaxer, but now it's about half the length of the rest of my hair. It takes time and patience to grow your nape back.

My nape is the most jacked up part of my hair. I literally have a horizontal line in the back of my head which separates the nape area from the rest where the rest is several inches longer. If my nape area was as long as the rest, the back of my hair would look much longer and fuller. However, I have been seeing improvements in my nape (growing and breaking less) since I 1st came to LHCF

ETA: its probably 2 inches. and its the nappiest part of my head. My stylist once asked me if the back of my head used to be shaved! It never has. :(

My nape is about 4 inches. I'm wearing an updo today and noticed that some of the nape was falling out. It is long enough for me to tuck it into the other hairs that were sweeping up. It's the longest that it's ever been except when I was a kid.

I was completely bald back there thanks 2 the scissor happy stylist I had. now I have 2" of totally natural hair while the rest is sorta strait. My relaxer didn't take.:( It is growing kinda fast tho.:yay:

My question is how do you get it to catch up with the rest of your hair. I too have that line that separates my nape from the rest of my hair. Its so hard though because in order to keep it growing I'd have to moisturize it every single day.

Who here had the most jacked up nape area and then turned it into the most beautifullest thing?

My nape is longer then the rest of my hair by about an inch and a half
I think thats becuase its a different texture in the back and it retains length better

i say about 6-9 inches. that's my slowest growing area  i noticed my hair rubs against my coat too. i wear it pinned/ponytailed alot to minimize friction.

sigh...This is exactly how my nape is. At one point in time there was not hair at all. However it has been making some progress. I used some mn on it and that really seemed to work. Along with the fact that my hairdresser put some single braids on them to encourage some growth. So far it has worked....
