4 months post-relaxer!

My appointment is next weekend and my stylist says that I need to let him pull the relaxer all the way through my hair because I don't get it relaxed often enough.

I must admit that it seems that the relaxer is not truly "permanent" and my hair is more coarse when I don't relax as frequently as every 6-8 weeks, but it certainly doesn't revert to its natural state.

Now, a few years ago, he did used to pull the relaxer through almost all of my hair and it got fried, but I was going every 6-8 weeks.

I'm wondering if I'm risking being "fried" again even though I only go every 3-4 months.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I have no answer to your question Blosss but I am just curious as to why this thread is a 1 star. GEEZ folks get a life already!

Blosss who you done pissed off now? :lachen:

I would not let him "pull" the relaxer through my hair. Unless he will coat the already relaxed hair with a protectant.

He will refry your already relaxed ends.

You want to let him pull it through.
Cover it before going to the salon

I ain't pissed off nobody! LOL!

Thanks, IntoHair. I won't be allowing the pull through either. I just can't take that chance.

DON"T DO IT! It will be fried again. Your hair will end up overprocessed and thin. My stylist overprocessed my the last time my hair was relaxed in Sept. Use your better judgment of this one and all of the good info that you have gathered from all of the ladies here.

Now Blossssom I would have never thought U would of have asked this ?, LOL, good thing you decided not to let it happen. Now remember once you get in his chair not to let him bully you and talk you into letting him do it.

:needpics:

Now you know us folks in this part of the woods like to see all kinds of pics

Since it has been that long I probably would coat the ends with something and let him pull it all the way through my hair to make sure you won't have such a big difference in texture. But that is just my personal opinion please don't stone me

I know exactly what you mean, My hair is the same way, because I stretch for sooo long at at time, sometimes up to 8 months, so I just go over it all again, but I only do that because I almost cant tell the diffrence from my newgrowth and my already relaxed hair.. it always turnes out fine, but we all have diffrent hair so you should choose what you feel comfortable with. :)

You might need to find a new stylist.

Your stylist has already shown you what will happen if you allow him to relax your newgrowth. You have this information. There is no reason to repeat that negative experience.

Many of us are stretching which is not getting our hair relaxed often, on purpose. If you are stretching, it sounds like he is not familiar with that process. I'm sure you can find a better stylist. :)

And see, this is what I've been experiencing ever since I began stretching out to 3-4 months at a time.

The hair on top of my hair looks relaxed, but all inside of the bulk of my hair, it looks "untouched".

I have at least three different textures of hair on my head, and I'm concerned that the reason why is because he's only doing the new growth, thus, my hair looks like nothing has been done to it.

I can't wear a proper wash n' go because of the different textures :(

Saida says she does all of her hair and she's fine and she's a 1a and I'm a 4a. If she can get away with stretching 4-8 months without penalty, surely me with all this wool on my head can get away!

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll let y'all know what happens Friday night.

Well, after he "burnt me out" last time, I did consider it but then I got the good advice from here that he should only be doing the roots and I think that is even said on the box of the relaxer. Roots only, right?

The only reason I stretch is because I believe hair grows faster with less processing.

However, the only way my hair is all one texture is to apply heat and I'm a wash 'n go girl and flat-ironing is not my forte.

I only began noticing the uneven textures when I started stretching.

Perhaps going every 6-8 weeks and getting the new growth permed only is the option, however, I will sacrifice hair growth rate due to the frequency.

I have done this b4 and my hair was okay. But i dont think it should be done more that once every 1-2 years.

Be sure to update us on what u decide.................

Will do... because the perm "wears" off and you're walking around with underprocessed hair.

My mother always streched my and her relaxers when I had one. I never got a relaxer 6 to 8 weeks. I think I would get a relaxer 2 or 3 times a year and she always pulled it through. She would just apply it to the roots. Then when she was done with the roots she would smooth it through the last few minutes. My hair was fine. If I was relaxed now and got it done that often I would probably pull it through once a year so my texture was even.

Don't let him do it. Once a hair has been relaxed, it doesn't revert so passing it through the entire hair length is not necessary. I haven't had a relaxer in 8 months and when I do get one, I'm going to apply Scurl to my ends so that I can get a chance to see where my new growth starts. I'm definitely won't be combing all through my hair. Nope, no sir.:nono:

whether you wait 6 weeks or 6 months youre still perming hair that has been permed before. and wont your ends get jacked up as a result of this? :perplexed

i dont understand how bonds that have been chemically broken would come back. are you sure that instead of reverting that your hair isnt just getting damaged? it just sounds like at some point the ends are going to have had enough..:ohwell:

Thank you.... as the other poster said no more than twice a year, because my hair is starting to look a little "strange".

I'm going to tell the stylist to go for broke because I can't remember the last time I had a pull through. I've been stretching 3-4 almosts for about a year and a half.

You know, when he damaged it last time, amazingly, it didn't break off and when I began oiling and flat-ironing on a regular basis, my hair actually seemed to "heal" itself, but again, I was going every six weeks; not every 16.

I'll let you all know what happens.

Ditto on this. I have thin ends now from a stylist who overlapped.:wallbash:

Blosssom, i remember when you had a pic of your hair and it was very pretty. Please don't ruin it....

How often were you relaxing?

When I say "heal", the oil and heat made the hair appear to not even be damaged. It was very strange.

Thanks, Loca... I have to find a way to continue my wash n' goes, though.

I was relaxing every 10 weeks. I'm a 4b. My ends are sooooooooo thin right now. i can't even wear my hair down. it's so embarrassing.

I see what you are saying when you say "heal".

I dunno sometimes we can do things to our hair that are not that healthy but our hair survives. Like some people can use heat everyday and others can't.
Actually a friend of mine (RIP) used to apply relaxer to her ends and she had thick, healthy APL hair. She always got compliments on her hair. I dunno some people's hair can handle everything and others can't.

But based on my current dilemna, I'm telling everybody to avoid overlapping like the plague!!!!

And I agree with other poster that said you should put some conditioner or oil on the previously relaxed ends.

Let's see... relaxing every 4 months is three times per year, so I could do a full pull through this time around; skip a pull through the next time around and then at the end of the term, do a final pull through for that one year.

Hey, B! I'm so very happy that you posed this question. :yep: I won't relax again until mid-December. I worry that I may have so much new growth that I don't know what do to with. If I'm going to relax, I already decided to have it professionally done. So I appreciate this. Please let us know what your results are. ;)

Hey, Bloss: if you do pull it through, don't pull it all the way through to the ends. Stop at least 1 or 2 inches from the ends. You don't want perm on your ends, I know give a damn how long you've waited to relax. You're hair is way too gorgeous to take that chance...unless of course, you plan to cut 1 or 2 inches off.

I don't think you should let him pull it all the way through. What would the purpose be to re-relax your already relaxed hair? You don't want to end up looking like Teva, do you?
