I am still trying to choose between bunning and twisting. I know people use weaves and extensions too. I don't, but I am still curious. So, what's the best method for retaining the most growth? Add any additional info as well.

For me it was twist + bun - ie, I stuck my twists into a bun. Just a bun alone gave my hair too much room to shrink/tangle around itself.

I really can't speak for anyone else but I've retained the most growth braiding in box braids or twists with extensions. I've learned that the slight tension caused by the extensions causes the hair to grow more rapidly. That has always been the best method for me.

Plaits helped me best. I don't use extensions with them. Sometimes I bun them too. Twists caused ssk's and tangling for some reason.

For me, it's bunning.
Once I started bunning daily and keeping my hair moisturized and sealed in the bun, my hair began retaining more length.
And I like to bun because it protects my hair while giving me complete access to my hair and scalp. And for me, it's cheaper and easier to bun than it is to braid.
The only thing that braids had on buns for me was that braids were a really low manipulation style and kept me from always checking my hair. Buns allow me to play in my hair and do length checks too much. Also, braids are a little more versatile than buns...you can switch up the styles and colors, and you can wear them down and still have your hair protected. You can't wear a bun down.

Bunning worries me because of the breakage at the point of the scrunchie. But I guess that is solved by moving the scrunchie around? How often should you move the bun? Every week? Every day?

I said bunning but it's just what I do. I don't do twist or braids cause I just cant tolerate them. Don't ask. I haven't had breakage but I don't use rubber bands or scrunchies for the most part. So I'm bias.

For me it is bunning. But I put my hair in a pony and twist three different sections of the ponytail and then twirl around and bun.

I change styles completely, I will have a bun with a scrunchie for a couple of days then I will pin my hair up into a french twist for a couple of days and then something else. This way I'm not putting stress on my hair for any prolonged period, and it's working!

Not sure if I can really vote cause I don't wear braids or weaves, but I am a fan of the bun. I find I don't have to manipulate my hair much at all (ie using combs between wash days). This really works when I use my scarf.

i vote for weaves.
i love to change styles often. therefore, whenever i do protective styles without extensions, it's way too easy for me to just pull them out when i'm bored. i'm not disciplined enough to stick my hair in a bun or twists and leave it alone.
in a weave, i can't get at it, unless i wanna take down the whole thing...and i never really feel like doing that.

This is exactly what I'm doing now--also as seen in my siggy.

In the past, I grew my hair long with weaves, but I found those to be thinning, plus, I want to deal with my own hair now. I'm finding that the bunned twists are really helping me to retain well.

I don't use a scrunchie/hair tie in my hair - I bun with my hair only/tucking it into itself. Or, I use a hair stick. Or, I use GoodHairDay hairpins - they are FABULOUS! But never a ponytail holder - it's too rough on my fine hair, even if I move it daily.

Hrm, I'm not sure if that would work for relaxed hair, though - you might need a little extra 'hold'.

I think braids (with and without extensions) help me retain the most length. I can still access my scalp, but my hair is constantly protected and I'm not tempted to do anything to it.

Bunning and braids have been my best friends. When I had BSL hair I grew it to MBL simply from bunning and giving my hair breaks with braids. Now that I am growing out my BC I see the most retention while in braids. When I get back to shoulder length I will be bunning again.

Both can be quite successful..just depends upon preference. I twist or go with a chunky, curly fro with headbands..I get great growth and I'm looking forward to summer when I'll have enough growth and Denman brushout with conditioner patience to bun again..I loved bunning while I was relaxed.

For me: when I rollerset my hair and do pin curls. I pin up the back of my hair so my hair doesn't rub against my collars, clothes, etc...I moisturize and seal daily and just pin it up at night. In the morning I just pull the curls apart and play with them until they are like I like it. And for some reason I'm able to retain my hair and less on the floor :)
