I just switched the two bobby pins I'm wearing to hold my french braids in place and I can't believe it, it actually does feel more secure.

I can't wait to get home to call my mom and tell her about this!

I feel like the lady in that spaghetti sauce commercial now, "I wonder what other questionable choices I've made?"

I had no idea either. Then again I use mine more like hair pins then bobby pins when I construct buns and rolls.

I also had no clue others were using it flat side down. I figured the hook part at the end of the bobby pin's wrinkle side would look messy upward, since it sticks out... and the wrinkled part was the grip for the hair under... :D

Lies, Fairytales, and Fallacies! I see decorated bobby pins, and the decorated side is the wrinkled side. I would think that the manufacturer would know which side is right way up!

and to the ones that say when they see them they are smooth, thats because some pins are smooth on BOTH sides.

Oh, stop being a know-it-all. You ain't know...

Seriously, I don't think I've ever seen anyone put it flat-side up.

I mean it makes sense. It would seem if you but the bumpy side down it could catch the hair better and the flat-side up would look neater I guess, but still...:spinning:

Seriously though......ive only ever worn them that way...and never seen anyone wear them that way...then again ive never really paid attention........but if I wanted it to lay to the scalp more I would just curve it in the middle with the flat side up

I wonder what else I've been doing wrong all of these years. I may need to re-evaluate my life.

see, I was wondering about those decorated ones but I haven't been to the store to check it out yet. I will make sure to go to the accessory aisle next time I'm at the store to check that out.

I can't say I've ever really paid attention to how I put them in. According to this blog it could go either way.

Is there a right way to use a bobby pin?!

Like most of you, I use bobby pins with the wavy side up. In other words, the flat side in against my head. In a recent article, Allure Magazine challenged this common hair knowledge. They stated that bobby pins were meant to be used with the wavy side down?! W.H.A.T?! I was in disbelief, shock… and even felt anger for some reason. I refused to believe that I’ve been using bobby pins the wrong way my entire life.

I mentioned the Allure article on Facebook and many of you (like me) were resistant to the “wavy side down” method. So… I set out to find the answer and went straight to the source. I got in touch with Goody and also talked to a few hairstylists.
Do you know how to use your bobby pins?
Are you using your bobby pins the correct way?

So here’s the deal: There’s no wrong way to use a bobby pin! Wavy side up and wavy side down both have their own set of benefits. Hooray! I haven’t been using them the wrong way all my life~ Also, I’m so happy to have learned a new way to use the good ole trusty bobby pin.
Benefits of using bobby pins with wavy side up:

  • Flat side is longer so it’s easier to slide into hair with the wavy side up.
  • Adds dimension and texture.
  • Seamlessly blends in with curly hair.
Benefits of using bobby pins with wavy side down:

  • According to Allure and Goody, it’s supposed to provide a better hold.
(I personally don’t think so. Think my “Sticky Bobby Pin” trick works better at helping the bobby pins stay in place, and holding my hair.)
  • Leaves a clean neat appearance on straight hair.
  • You can color or decorate the flat part of the bobby pin (as pictured on right)!
I’m still (and probably will always be) a wavy-side-up kinda girl… but I can appreciate the fact that there’s another right way.
Who knows… depending on the look I’m going for, I may choose to use the wavy side down for a change!
So… are you a wavy-side-up or wavy-side-down girl?~ LMK in the comments below!
Until next time, stay pretty… inside and out. xoxo

Ok, soooo I just tried with the wavy side down. It did not feel right at all, and s few strands were in the bobby pin when I took it out. *shakes fist*

i barely ever use bobby pins but if I did i wouldnt try it this supposed "right way", seems like it would damage my hair lol.

Does it say why it matters? I wonder if that's why they always hurt my head.

I guess I really never thought about the design. There must be a reason one side is straight and the other side um, bumpy :look:

They have always hurt my head too-- that's why I don't wear them. I don't know how people do it, the edges are so sharp. Bobby pins are responsible for breaking the hair clean off my whole crown area. Keep them away.
