Are Blow Outs That Bad

I just came back from getting my hair done at a Dominican salon. BTW they did a wonderful job. However I was really tempted to get a blow out because it made the hair look so straight and sleek, but was scared to because I thought my hair would fall off. Also Marvin, my stylist, said no blow outs. But I was wondering if once would hurt? Has anyone done the blowouts without adverse effects? And if so how often do you do them?

I do it myself. I use a big round brush and I would say that my hair is healthy. But then, I only do it once or twice a month. All the other times I don't put any heat on my hair not even from a hooded dryer. I think if you do everything in moderation it won't hurt. But make sure your hair is not damaged/brittle/breaking, cause then the blowout would definitely be a bad choice imo. But think about it like this, your let your hair grow and grow and grow and you take so much care of it, of course there will be days when you want to see what you have achieved, there is nothing wrong with getting a blow out.

Pumpkin,

Blowing your roots is an acceptable mid-point (IMO) just wrapping the hair and blowing it all out. I prefer to blow my roots only when I go to a DS because my hair gets just as straight, retains some of the movement and body that the rollerset gives it, and leaves the older more fragile ENDS of my hair untouched.

Pumpkin...no disrespect to Marvin...but you should do what YOU want and what makes YOU most comfortable when it comes to your hair. You know your hair better than anyone else. Blowouts can cause damage but they don't have to and if they aren't causing damage to your hair then it shouldn't be a problem.

Everyone's hair will respond differently to this method (blowing the hair after a rollerset) so even some of the experiences you get on this thread won't be accurate for you. So trust your instincts, go with what YOU know about your hair, do what YOU want, and watch your hair carefully. Ultimately, no blowout will have your hair falling out over night. It's safe to play around a little with this and see what happens.

Again - to me, blowing my roots gives me the best of both worlds when it comes to MY hair.

Hi Pumpkin,

I did them all the time, in sections and blowdried on cold. I was also very gentle with my hair and oppose to blowdrying my hair with a comb all the time, I would just pull my hair straight and let the blowdryer go up and down my hair. When I used to go to the salon, I did notice that some people were VERY heavy-handed using a blowdryer.

Pumpkin,
My experience with blowouts is not all that positive. I LOVED the way my hair looked, it bounced it shined, it was so great I got them done every 2 weeks. I had all of my hair blown out and it proved that the heat was too intense. It caused me to have split ends and hair that was uneven and unhealthy. But mind u I got blowouts over 6 months every 2 weeks and on my entire head. I would advise them very very very infrequently or not with a professional dryer.

My hair doesn't fair too well with blowouts either particularly my ends. It increases my tendency to get split ends and have broken little pieces a few days after the blowout. The broken bits are not as severe if I rollerset first. If u must blow I say go along with Tracy's suggestion, do the roots only and spare your precious ends. Or just blowout occasionaly like once a month

Isn't it a shame that something that make your hair so shiney and bouncy could potentially destroy it??? /images/graemlins/nono.gif

I forgot to tell you that I don't always blow dry my whole head. A lot of times after washing&conditioning I comb my hair to the back and let the roots dry in the pony tail method. That way my roots get the straightes. The rest of my hair is in a bun. So even if my roots on top of my head are dry my bun is still damp. This way you don't put too much stress on your hair. Also remember to always use either a heatprotectant spray or lotion. Currently I use African Pride Spray and it works great, but I have to add some pink oil and the results are wonderful. But I don't want to start babbling. Take care girl,

Nay.

I had my roots blown out twice (after getting a roller set at a Dominican salon). The first time I went, I had three months worth of new growth. Once the lady was done with my hair, you couldn't tell I had any new growth. /images/graemlins/grin.gif She was very gentle with my hair, and it seemed to do fine with my hair and me. /images/graemlins/wink.gif

That's all it is HC. They take a handheld dryer and a round brush and blow out sections of your hair for a straighter look
Sometimes they do this after a rollerset or on wet hair.

I would like to ask a question too. Which one do you think is worse a blowout or a flat iron? The regular Gold n Hot kind. The reason I am asking is because I am looking for an alternative to straighten my hair when it is growing out but I have a sew in, So the ponytail method is not an option for me.

Good Question.
I have been rollersetting my hair for about 2 months now. Once I followed it up with a blowdryer on the roots only and the last time I followed it with a ceramic Chi turbo flat iron. I dont know which one is healthier in the the long run, but my hair felt much more moisturized when I used the flat iron on my rootsas opposed to blowdrying the roots. I also had some breakage accompanied with the blowout.
