Does your stylist have hair envy?

My mother who has always had long flowing hair like a horses mane now has 3 inches of hair.
She had been natural for 60 years and recently decided to relax. After checking out several salons she made a choice to go to one that was recommended by some of her friends.
There she got a relaxer and then requested a trim. She stated the stylist kept commenting on how she could not live with all this hair. And she bet my mother had a hard time managing it. She also stated that the older we get the shorter the hair should be. My mother said she should have left right there. But decided to give her the benefit of a doubt since she was so highly recommended.
After the relaxer she proceeded to do what she called a trim. She took 6 inches off my mothers hair as she stated that this was a favor to her. "It makes it easier to comb ...she stated" My mother discontinued the service immediately. She refused to pay for the service and ever so eloquently put the stylist in her place.
Within the next week she noticed an excessive amount of hair breaking. I recommended that she rewash with a neutralizing shampoo that was color coded. Low and behold it changed colors.
The chemical had not been stopped correctly. This is why she suffered from so much breakage. She was distraught and decided to cut her hair off.
I am upset. I think that the stylist was envious. This is a warning just to say becareful who you get to do your hair regardless of who it is.
I think this women need a

I wanted to smack her myself after reading your post. Since you're a member of this wonderful forum, I know you will give your Mom lots of great hair care advise so her hair can get back to where it was before.

I doubt that my mother will sue. She says she put it in the hands of the Lord!
I know my mother well and Im sure every last word she said echoed in the stylist ear. I myself would have put my foot so far up in her _ _ _. (You know the word... she would have spit out my shoe!

Lord forgive me please!

Oh my goodness. I am shocked that the color changed after a week. She must have left sooo much relaxer in her hair. I would sue but I think your mom's decision to put it in the Lord's hands is best. I know her hair will be back in no time.

Your mother must be a strong centered person. I hope her hair recovers quickly. I am not familiar with a neutralizing shampoo that is color coded. Would someone please let me know the brand name of this type of shampoo? Thanks for the help.

Isoplus has one that is color coded for 99 cents. PCJ has one as well but I've only seen it in the kits and not seperately.

That's so evil! What is WRONG with folks these days? Dag!

oh, minniepaws (lol @ your screenname), there are several shampoos that turn colors. Check out the shampoos on the sally site. The Isoplus Upturn and the Eco10 on the first page say they have indicators. Also all 4 on the second page:
Neutralizing shampoos

That's why it pays to do our own hair, whenever possible. I'm sure her natural hair was beautiful! I'm so sorry what happened to your mother. That was criminal!

Several years ago, Oprah had two great shows about this very subject and it appeared that the majority of the audience (especially the black female audience) had horrible experiences with their stylists. Some of the stylists were there defending themselves. A lot of the problems seemed to center around hair envy.

that gets me so mad to hear somthing like that. This is so unfair
. I will forever run away from stylists, which I have always done so far(unless they are specialised with long hair, with proof of it
).

See this is exactly why I do my own hair. I would rather mess myself up than have someone do it for me.

I am so sorry that the stylist cut so much of your mother's hair off. How dare the stylist do this! I just don't know what makes these stylists think they have the right to decide that they know best in terms of the hair that's growing out of someone else's head. Having a license to do hair does not give them the right to have total control over someone else's hair. I think that they should always automatically ask before cutting/"trimming" someone's hair as well as ask how much the person wants trimmed. Well, I hope your mother takes comfort in knowing that since her hair was so long before she has a good chance of growing it to longer lengths again with time. She had every right not to pay for the service. It's such a shame that some of these stylists think they can get away with stuff like this.

I am so sorry. My mom has long, healthy, beautiful hair that she cares for herself. I'd be so devastated if someone messed it up intentionally. Good thing your mom is more patient and less temperamental than mine...

Wait a minute....the woman actually thought she was doing your mom a "favor" by cutting her hair? You gotta be kidding.

That stylist shouldn't be allowed to get away with this. Take pictures & call Judge Judy! When I was a teen, I had a stylist leave relaxer behind my ears after relaxing, drying, cutting, & hot-curling my hair. I ended up with burns, oozing, & scabs. Looking back, I wish I had sued.

That is just plain sick and evil!!!!!! How could she do that....I hada similar experience too with those jealous hairstylists. Whenever I trim my hair, my mom usually does it but the last time i got a relaxer, I decided that the hair stylist do it for me instead...and the lady took off like 4 inches of hair. I was sooo upset and i mean everyone around me kept commenting to make matters worst. I know exactly how she feels

That makes me so sad. I am looking for new stylist and I keep going to the same people because I am afraid of this exact thing. People saying how much your hair has grown and how pretty your hair is while using the roughest comb and almost rip my hair out. this is a scary thought to me that people would do this and there are people in this world who arent very confrontational and may not say anything to those who wrong them. God bless you all.

Thankfully my stylist tries to keep as much lenght as possible when doing your hair! she herself has long hair, as well as her clients. She taught her sons to do hair and they are in the shop w/her.( their wives have waist lenght hair) If she stops doing hair, I'll have one of them to do it!

I actually have met one stylist who I feel actually tried to sabotage my hair. Intentionally ripping it during the wet comb out after I specifically told her not too. She actually 'sucked-her-teeth' when I told her my hair was fragile. And I did have noticeable damage from having her wash/press. The other stylist I have encountered were just not quality stylists, but they were not TRYING to jack me up as Marilyn (that's right, that's her name) was.

I don't ever intend to EVER let a stylist do my hair EVER again. I went to one at JCP and she JACKED me. I would have been past bra-strap by now but I will probably have to cut my hair to my chin next time I trim.

You know.................this really doesnt' surprise me at all!! I'm convinced that many stylists purposely jack up our hair so that they can make you come back to get it back healthy! Like they're trying to force you into being a customer because your hair will start breaking and getting more dry over time from the damage they inflict that we end up running back to them with no place to go, hoping that they'll "fix it and make it healthy again"!! I really believe this is how many of them get customers to come back! Maybe they think that if they actually do our hair well, and get it staying healthy, etc. , that we'll either leave or only come in every 3 months or so because we won't need them so much!!

if a stylist intentionally damaged my hair, i wouldn't keep going back for treatment!! but if with a stylist i had nice healthy hair, i'd keep going back every now and again between touchups for a 'do.
