How do you use shea butter?

I bought shea butter, but I don't know how to use it. Does it make your hair hard, or soft. And I would also like to know where do you put it on your hair, and if you wash it out? I know you can leave in the mango butter, but what do you do with the shea. Thanks for the help sistas!

I use Shea Butter as my moisturizer, as I section off my hair to roller set I apply a small amount of shea butter to the section especially the ends and then roller set. This has been the only thing that has made my hair very soft to the touch and not hard and brittle.
