managing hair with sew in

Hello everyone. I recently got a sewin weave to help me in my transition. I am currently 6 months post and started to develop lots of breakage and shedding, so it is my hope that the sew in will give me some reprieve. But in the interim I would like to know what some of you all have used in terms of oils/growth aids/frequency of washes etc will maintaining the sew in.

Specific products used would also be greatly appreciated.

HI You should check out Reniece (Im positive their are threads about her so you can do a search) She is a weave specialist. In her fotiki she gives her weave (sew-in) regimen.

Also, you can look at her website. I have personally never had a sew-in done by her it is very expensive but OBVIOUSLY worth it from the pics. Some ladies on here are sew-in pros so hopefully they will chime in!!!!

One of the last sew ins I had was right after my pregnancy in 07 and I had it for 3 months. I did not wash, condition or moisturize my hair during that time. I don't recommend this:ohwell:, although I received alot of growth and repeated the same regimen (or lack thereof) when I had a sew in in Jan 09 (in for only 3 weeks).
I am transitioning as well and I would recommend not applying a lot of products to your hair or having too much manipulation while you have this style. It may cause build up, which can lead to breakage when you try to detangle after taking the braids out. The line of demarcation is so sensitive! Happy growing!:drunk:

I suggest you keep your braids moisturized (i.e. rosewater/glycerin, spray leave-ins, etc...) I use lacio lacio along Jane Carter leave-in...

Make sure you cont'd to shampoo and condition your hair- A lot people dilute their poo/conditioners with water in a applicator bottle but I don't but I hear it works really good that way though!

I would also suggest cont'd DC'ing ( use can dilute it too) but I don't I just apply the conditioner directly on my braids. However, I'm in the shower for a long time making sure I get all of it out! I've never had any issues with build-up because I poo my hair regularly...

I transitioned with a weave (and still rock them for protective styles) but you have to make sure you take really good care of your hair!

Before you take it down, I suggest you research some good methods because the take down is where a lot of people go wrong and end up with a tangled, matted mess!

I currently:
-Poo/condition my hair every 1-2 weeks depending on my mood

-DC every 1-2 weeks (see above-lol) with Aubrey Organic Honeysuckle Rose

-I moisturized my hair every 1-2 days with Jane Carter leave-in conditioner, Lacio Lacio ( I normally pour a little out on my sink counter and massage it in my braids with my hands, I pull the weave tracks up w/clips to make sure it's going on the braid) or glycerin/rosewater

-I oil my scalp with oil (jojoba, peppermint, lavendar, tea tree oil) once a week or so ( I put the oils in an applicator bottle with a really thin tip)
