Has anyone learned how to memorize chapters of the Bible?
@janiebaby If you count Psalms, then yes. If not, then no. I have memorized quite a few scriptures via chapter and verse over the years and I still practice memorizing scriptures. I write them down on post it notes and place them where I will see them on a daily basis. I'm getting younger now, so I have to keep my memory sharp. The memory of the just is blessed. Proverbs 10:7a
Thank you! I've been thinking about writing them out over and over to help me commit them to memory. Its so tough.
@janiebaby, change your mindset. If you think it will be hard to do, then it will. If you believe it will be easy for you, then ask The Holy Spirit to help you retain what you read. Proverbs 18:21 says Death and life are in the power of the tongue. Practice speaking life over every area of your life, no matter what it looks like. Ask that as you memorize each chapter and verse, that God will use you to bless someone with your newfound knowledge of His word. Not only will you realize you have retained more scriptures than you give yourself credit for knowing, but also that you are helping to build the Kingdom of God by sharing what you have learned.
Go and bless someone today.
I would like to memorize John 1:1-17 ...I'm almost there.
Psalm 1, 23, 91 and 121 are most popular to learn.
So how about we do something to memorize scripture? Like let’s check in and pick scripture to memorize.
This is a terrific suggestion @nikkiheaven. I would like to put Genesis 1:1 and John 1:1 on the table, since these are foundational scriptures to everything else we believe. Perhaps we can take a week to learn new passages and check back in at the end of each week. This way we can help each other to stay motivated to keep going when things get hectic (and believe me they will.) We can make Sunday, March 18, 2018 the official start date and decide which book and chapter we want to memorize first.
These two scriptures tie in and I love it!
OK, so lets's start a new thread @newgrowth15 , and see who wants to particpate. I need this, so even if it's just me and you, I'm with it. Too often, I need a verse to combat what's going on with me, and I have nothing. Not knowing scripture, tampers with my faith.
Recording yourself reading scripture and then playing it back over and over helps with memorizing.
@bellatiamarie, you have just taken this to a whole new level. Based on your suggestion, not only would we memorize scripture, but also increase our faith. Romans 10:17 says: So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Already a double portion of blessings.
Amen and amen... I started doing this and it is a game changer indeed!! I also write scriptures on index cards with the actual scripture on one side and book/chapter/verse on the reverse side for use in daily practice.
I went to a women’s day at a former church. The keynote was Susan Heck. One of the talks she gave was about memorizing scripture, the whys and how to. She also recommended recording ourselves reading the scripture and playing it back. She did say that we should record ourselves reading quickly because research suggests that part of the reason we remember commercials so easily is the speed of the information given. She also recommends breaking passages up into small phrases and repeating them 40-50 times until the roll off of the tongue, then moving to the next short phrase and do the same thing. Next put them together.
She also recommends setting difficult passages to music to help them stick.
Ms. Heck told a story of a man she once knew who was in a nursing home. His mind was gone due to Dementia, but she visited as he was a family friend. She said while others would shout obscenities and sometimes nonsense, this man would would shout bible passages - after years of memorizing the Bible. Apparently he had been at it so long, he had almost the entire Bible in his head.
this is beautiful, truly what you put in will come out.
That’s awesome!!! Thank you for sharing this.
I think this is a great idea!
Maybe we can individually choose our own scripture or passage to memorize and we come back here to check in at least every other day. Checking in will provide encouragement to others.
If you forget to memorize then that's OK but based on experience I would ask that people don't post that you haven't gotten around to it because I notice that it discourages others.
I think it would be a good idea to dive right in. Instead of posting what we're considering memorizing, how about we start and post as we're going through the process, what helped, what didn't, why you chose the passage and/or what it means to you (if you want), and why you chose to memorize it. If any thoughts came to mind while you were memorizing the scripture (that you would like to share) and if you were able to apply the scripture to your day.
I'll tag others later but it's open to everyone and anyone
Please don't forget to tag me - scripture memorization is definitely something I need to improve on. It would be awesome to learn along with you ladies!
