Steaming your hair

I just purchased a hair steamer from Ebay and I was wondering what steps do you take when steaming your hair? for instance...

1. Wash first or (put conditioner on first?)
2. Put on conditioner (moisturizer or protein)
3. go under the steamer with a pastic cap (do you use a plastic cap when steaming?)
4. get back into the shower to rinse then...

Can you steam with a protein conditioner or a moisturizing conditioner?

Do you let your hair just hang when under the steamer or pin it up?

I steam after I shampoo and place my conditioner on - then I steam.
I do it with towels - so my hair ispinned up.

For the record, can I just say i am soooooooooooooooooooooooooo JEALOUS!!!!! I have wanted a steamer for 2 years now. I just didn't want a big contraption in my house (also the price was hard to swallow). My husband said that if I stick with the Don't Buy Anything in May Challenge, then I can order one.
