WEAVE EXPERTS/WEARERS!!! I HAVE SOME QUESTIONS FOR YOU

I would love to make a change after wearing these recent set of cornrows. I remember wearing weaves years ago but i never had a clue how to care the style and real hair underneath. My hair would often be very dry.

I pose the following questions:

1. Can i achieve good growth as i have with braids?
2. What method do you use to wash and care the hair?
3. What moisturisers and conditioners are most suitable? (i hope to avoid dryness and build-up)
4. What type of hair should be used?
5. How long can i keep the style in for?
6. How do you take care in removing the weave without causing damage to real hair.
7. What condition is your hair in after you immediately remove weave? i.e. dry, matted etc.

Thanks in advance

I'm currently wearing a sew in weave...what i do to wash mine is just use diluted shampoo and stand in the shower...and then just blow dry the hair like its my own hair(ive really only washed mine once since i had it in and ive been wearing it for about 5 weeks)...as far as moisturizing it..its kind of hard to do so because majority of my hair is sewin and its some parts that im unable to get to so basically i concentrate on my edges and parts that i can get to...i wldnt advise you to use any kind of oil(such has WGHO or MTG) because it can get on the hair weave and tend to weigh it down and keep it from being curled(if its straight hair im not sure of the reaction of it with wavy or curly hair)....im trying to at least leave mine in for another maybe two to three weeks so that'll be a total of 8 weeks for me...this is my first time for leaving my weave in...and i just carefully cut it out and make sure im not cutting my own hair(thats what i did last year) i was such a rush that i ended up cutting some areas of my own hair...or you could get someone to cut it out for you..i know Reniece(the Weave Specialist) stated that she would leave hers in for 4 to 6 weeks of a time...have you tried Renieces site...http://public.fotki.com/Reniece20 she has some good pointers for wearing a sewin weave...she used the sewin to grow her hair out to i believe its bra strap....or maybe u could write her she does respond and ask her about how to basically take care of your hair...i know she stated that Remi is a good sewin hair...and ive actually went thru her comments and guestbook just to see her responses to get some answers to some of my questions about doing the sewin weaves....u may also want to read thru the Sewin Weave challenge that we have going on right now and some of the ladies in that thread gave some good pointers also....good luck den1...

1. Can i achieve good growth as i have with braids? yes, just as much as with braids!
2. What method do you use to wash and care the hair? i use a diluted moisturizing shampoo massage in scalp and rinse..just like with braids..i moisturize with better braids spray every other day, i follow the same rules as CnG method just about.
3. What moisturisers and conditioners are most suitable? (i hope to avoid dryness and build-up) i dont use alotta heavy cond. b/c of the build up..but like i said in the previous question BBS work fantastic for moisture..my hair is super soft when i take down my weave...
4. What type of hair should be used? any kind of weaving hair u would like to use..some BSS can be very crappy though, after a weeks wear some of that hair can get very knotty and unruley..
5. How long can i keep the style in for? if u get a good weave..maybe up to 3 mos...im leaving my current weave in for a minimum of 2 1/2 months..i did it myself and i made sure my wefts are very secure and my braids were not too tight but snug.
6. How do you take care in removing the weave without causing damage to real hair.well i just take my time...remove it with care the same as u would do with braids and its hella easier to take down b/c its cornrows and depending on who does it there may not be many cornrows to take down, i have about 8-9 braids in my head..i love weave's its about 3 hrs to do when i take my time..as supposed to me sitting for a 1 1/2 days briadng my head..
7. What condition is your hair in after you immediately remove weave? i.e. dry, matted etc. super soft, super managable and lots of growth...no knots..minimal build up, very little.

keep us posted on if u decide to do it or not.
good luck, cant wait too see more responses!

I could not say it better, we have the same method Assummertyme:) !!
Just two small differences: a hairdresser sew in my weave and I 'm leaving it in for 6 weeks at a time!

Thanks for reminding me about reniece site? i've visited it before, i must write to and inquire into how she cared for her hair while wearing weaves. I have few other questions. Do you shampoo inbetween the tracks?
Does your scalp itch a lot due to infrequent washings? thanks for informing me of the weave challenge thread. I'll se if i can find it in the search window.

How often do you wash the scalp and hair?
So you apply BBS as a leave-in conditioner/moisturiser after shampooing?. Thank-you ladies for all the information you have provided, it is very helpful. I'm open to suggestions from other ladies too.

1. Yes, you can.
2. There's a section of my hair in the front that's left out, while the rest (majority) of my hair is completely weaved. So, I wash the exposed section weekly, deep condition, and then rollerset it. I wash the weaved section every two weeks with a clarifying shampoo and mix it with water in a container and pour it down the scalp several times before rinsing. I don't agitate the weaved section.
3. I use Sta Sof Fro rub on moisturizer to moisturise the tracks. It's best to use something that has a watery base rather than an oil or grease, because you need something to penetrate the hair shaft, while the grease/oil simply just sits on the hair.
4. Human hair is best. The type of hair you get depends on what type of hairstyle you're looking for.
5. If you take really good care of the weave by making sure to wash it, moisturize the tracks, wrapping it every night, etc....you can get away with leaving it in for 3 months. But you really have to be diligent with taking care of it, and sometimes it depends on the hair stylist that puts it in and whether they made the cornrows tight enough.
6. I spray a detangler on the tracks when I'm undoing them.
7. When I wash my hair more frequently it's less matted than when I don't, and it's more dry if I don't moisturize my tracks regularly like twice a week. So, I think the more you wash it and moisturize it the more healthy your hair will be when it's time to remove the weave.

Since you can do it yourself that's good, I wish I could braid and sew my own hair like you, I saw your album, that great!!
