so last night i decided to flat iron my hair (i usually do braidouts&pin my hair up) because i had a strong urge to. So today im sitting in the library trying to cram before my chemistry exam:look: (i know..i know..lol) and this girl, lets call her Amy, who i see often but ive never talked to came up to me and started touching my hair and this is how the conversation went..
Amy: omg your hair is so long, ive never seen it down before

Me:why,thankyou!

Amy:So what are you?are you like mixed with indian or maybe dominican (sidenote once your hair is APL or beyond they automatically assume youre mixed with either indian or dominican:ohwell:)

Me:Of course not,im Haitian Sak Pase?:grin::grin::grin:

Amy::shocked::shocked::thud:WHAT?! Haitian?! girl please i aint neva seen no typa Haitian with good hair, youre hairs too good to be Haitian.Haitian ppl have nappy short hair!!!And besides youre lightskinned all Haitian ppl are burnt&dark. You have to at least be mixed with something else cause there aint no way you can be Haitian.nuuh uuuh girl

Me:......uhm no im 100% Haitian.Thats where all my family is from.i moved here from Haiti when i was 7...and not all Haitians look the same,we're all different

Amy:hmmmpph whatever you say giirl but i still dont believe you, nothing about you even looks Haitian.

:nono: i cant believe even in college ppl are so ignorant.and whats worse is her hair was overprocessed and barely touched her ear and she had the nerve to talk about Haitian people's hair like that.sigh.so foolish

this isnt the first time this has happened to me.i actually get this a lot...when ppl ask me what my ethnicity is they get so excited cause they think im going to say something cool or exotic like "black, indian(blackfoot&cherokee),portugese, and guyanese!..o wait and my greatgreat grandma was korean!" but when i say "Haitian" all the excitement just dissapears from their face&they look confused.
maybe its because of where i live (i live in Georgia) because i know for a fact when i visit my family in newyork or miami i see plenty of haitians with nice hair no matter the length

lol sometimes i just make up my ethnicity just to make them shutup.because if i say something cool/exotic they'll be like ahaaaaa!i knew it! and leave me alone.but if i say Haitian thats where all the questions&ignorance start coming in and sometimes i just dont feel like dealing with it

I would have raised hell in that Library .. not only did i hate when people made a fuss over my hair when i was relaxed (BSL big freaking deal, my hair was not that dope but w/e just my opinion BSL isn't that long to me), they'd also give me REASONS why i shouldn't have my hair. I'm dark-skinned, Haitian ... they'd go on & on ... then end it with a "but you're still pretty" ... like DUDE you just bashed me .. you can't end it with a compliment lmfaoooo

ignorant people man ... you gotta respond just as ignorant as them or they won't even get it ..

Some people are so stupid, part of my heritage is Haitian and most people that I know from Haiti don't fit her description. She needs to get out more.

lmfao wow i cant believe that.i dont know why but a lot of people automatically think haitians are like doomed to be ugly&that theres no such thing as a good looking haitian.i get the "youre too pretty to be haitian" comment all the time and im just fed up with it.ugh.&although im light complexioned i hate how a lot of ppl think if you're dark you cant have long hair.My aunt is dark and she gets the "youre not suppossed to have long hair because youre dark&youre haitian....but i guess its ok because youre pretty" thing too lmao&her hair is WL.
i wish i couldve thought of something better to say however when im in these type of situations my mind usually goes blank lol

i'm haitian as is the rest of my family and our hair varies from 1a to 4z and all of it is considered "good".
you should have told that girl about herself, completely unnecessary. all it is is self-hate on her part.

Girl, I'm Haitian and in Atlanta too (currently in school in the country) and this is just some ignorant person talking nonsense. I'm a little put off that she started the convo with her hand in your hair like she knew you! She's got some nerve. She probably wouldn't even be able to find Haiti on a map.

Kind of OT but most of the Haitian women I know have very thick, healthy and long hair.

i know i was suprised when she put her hand in my hair,i usually dnt have a problem with ppl touching my hair however if i dont knw you or have never talked to you before then i just find tht extremley rude.tell me why last yr this girl asked what i was doing for the holidays&i told her i was going to Haiti to visit family. and she was like (and im so serious) ooohh cool are you going to drive there???:slap:

Sak Passe, Im Haitian too. Don't let ignorant people affect you. Haitian women come with all sorts of hair types. Sometime you want to teach them but sometimes its best to Smh and walk away.

davis..it seems like in every thread i see you in youre asking for some damn pics lmfao
but yes i'll post pics :)

She's a visual kinda girl....

Back to the topic.

That's people for yaaaaaaaaaaaa. I'm not going to lie, I only heard about Haiti when the earthquake happened. (my condolences)

So ermm yeah, I just went on what I saw on t.v but then again I know people from the islands all have a different look. Just like how Africans have a different look.

I get the opposite... I am American and most people think im from the islands, specifically Haiti. I take it as a compliment because i know one of the reasons is due to the thick appearance of my hair.

HA! College doesn't stop anyone from being ignorant, its kind of upsetting to hear how ignorant our young people are becoming... its like some people think its cool now...?

The only thing you can really do is feel sorry for her... seriously...... To walk around in this day and age with ideas like that.
