My friend relaxes her hair every 2 week!?!

My friend/associate told me that she relaxes her hair every 2 weeks! She's really a friend of a friend. She says she has to, because her grows so quickly. Her hair ends are completely see through. There is thickness at the root, but nothing at the ends, which I assume is a result of this. I thought that was crazy, but I knew she wouldn't listen, if I told her. What do you do in situations where you know something is obviously wrong, but your afraid the person won't listen?

I thought I was crazy with these death-grip braids eatin my edges. Here we have a chronic permer... thats so sad, you must be horrified for her! You're gonna have to watch her go bald if she don't listen to you! In fact you should tell her that (but maybe gentler.)

Tell her she can't relax that often next time yall are doing your hair or discussing it. Explain to her NO one hair grows fast enough to need a perm every two weeks... Two weeks should only bring about 1/4 an inch of hair or less, and chances are since she relaxes so much her growth could have been stunted even then. Explain that the reason her ends are that way is probably that she is perming her hair TWICE as often than she should.

She washes or relaxes her hair every two weeks? Sorry i'm confused.

This is my mom. She also has dye in her hair. Her hair stays at SL and is so thin. I tried telling her [even her beautician] to wait some time before relaxing, but she's so hard-headed. The minute she sees some wave she's straight the salon, demanding a relaxer. :nono:

I would say try to tell her if she's not so hard-headed. If she's one of those people that can't them nothing [like my mom], then........... watch her go bald.:perplexed

From my experience, someone like that has been probably told a thousand times by different people that what she's doing isn't safe for her hair. I knew someone who had alopecia and even though her haidresser told her that the tight ponytails were the cause, this same person continues to this day to wear her hair pulled back in tight ponytails. She's practically bald on the sides, but I guess she isn't concerned.

I work with a lady that use to do this. I told her once but that's it. She still almost bald. Well.............. You can only tell them and it's up to them to listen. She should see that something is not working.:perplexed

Perhaps when she sees how long, thick and lovely your hair is, your mother will have a change of heart. This happened with me and my mother. When she came up for a visit, she marveled at how thick my hair had become and that it was growing. But in the same breath, she was like dang, you need a relaxer. I tried to explain to her that the very reason why my hair is finally thickening up is because I don't relax too often. Now she is trying to stretch her relaxer along with me. In fact, she's thinking of transitioning to natural altogether! :clapping: So, who knows? You may inspire someone to try your haircare habits. ;)

I would show her pictures of women who have done serious damage to their hair and scalps with perms. There are plenty of pics online. Heck, you can mail them to her in glossy 11 x 14 blowups anonymously

I'm confused too... wash or relax? I'm assuming it's relaxes because I know plenty of people that only wash every two weeks and they have nice hair. But RELAXING every two weeks....wooooo :lachen:I thought I was bad @ every 4-6 weeks :lachen:I'm suprised this lady has hair @ all!

Tell her, if she keeps relaxing her hair every two weeks, pretty soon there won't be ANYTHING to relax.

If I felt I had to relax my hair every 2 weeks I'd go natural in a heartbeat. Just chop all that permed hair off and start over with twa and/or wear a wig for a while until I grew enough hair back.

I doubt it, she asked me the other day, "What are u trying to do? Grow ur hair to the floor?!" "No, that's too long, mom" then she immediately says, "Well, I like my hair shoulder length!". She doesn't complain too much about her length but does want her hair to be THICK. She wouldn't be able to handle the stretching at ALL tho. :nono: She's terrible at doing hair. She calls me just to make her ponytail higher. :perplexed

Oops! Sorry this is off topic! :look:

There's someone in my office that relaxes every 2 or 3 weeks, and it shows. Her hair is short, very very thin with a huge bald spot in the center of her head. I've known her 4 years, and I have never seen new growth in her scalp. Someone must have had a talk with her because ole girl have been wearing braids, cornrows, and kinky twist for the last 3 months.

I'm assuming her beautician finally told her something. She was practically going bald!!! :nono:

Does she self-relax or does she have a stylist? I can't believe a stylist would advise a client to relax every 2 weeks or even condone it even if it is the client's bright idea. I can't believe some stylists would be that clueless or unethical?!

I don't know what she thinks about her hair, but I don't want to seem like a know-it-all. That's why I really don't say my opinion too often.
