Yea, I see you're on the biotin... yea, did that too and had a "reaction"

I'm just happy for the hair God has blessed me with. So what I'll never be able to step on my hair like the woman in the video? Ha! :)

As far as the health and thickness, I think biotin/pantothenic acid/b-complex combination have been good to me. In fact apart from my Centrum, I plan to ditch all of these so-called "hair growth" vitamins and just stick with these because I know they work. I'm loving the Alta Silica that Vev recommended because it's helping my joints. Apart from that, no more popping pills and stuff. I'm sick and tired of doing that, too!:yep:

Poppin' pills! LOL!

Okay! We're a bunch of HAIR addicts. Ha! :)

Yea, I started out taking the hair/skin/nail supplements... quickly abandoned them. Then started on biotin... had a skin reaction. Threw it away.

Went on to MTG... got a relaxer and realized what hell was. Now I'm on the Indian kick, but if it takes more than 45 minutes as Ms. Candy outlined, I'm done with that.

I may as well just face facts, I'm too lazy to have really long hair. I'm just trying to maintain  :)

Why do people seem ashamed or hesitant to say they agree with my comments, like they don't want to or something?

I've noticed over the time I've been here that people some time seem afraid to admit to agreeing with something I have to say as if it's wrong.

I don't know why that is.
No its not you, its jus in most threads we don't agree,so when i saw what u typed i was like , we actually agree on something:drunk:

i agree with that too. theres nothing wrong with stating facts. i didnt mention it in my post because i figure it was standard knowledge.. isnt it.?.......:ohwell:
I assumed so, but the last time Blossom made a thread about that all hell broke loose:look:. I like to think of it as what is easier to untangle without breaking: a phone cord (the curly one) or a pen spring?

Is that so strange, though? I never even noticed that we don't agree. I always enjoy reading your posts, whether we do or not.

If we agree, I say we agree, but if we don't agree, I don't think anything of it.

But if we do agree, we just do...

I don't know... I just see it far too often where people seem ashamed to admit they agree with me as if it is something wrong with that.

OT: I agree about the Indian regimen. Some of it does sound like too much. I think after I relax I will try adding the powders to the alma/shikakai/reetha shampoo that I have. I want to use what I already have and I've had that shampoo now for nearly a year. Anyway, I think it does a good job and I love the way it feels on my hair.

Back on topic: As for the long hair thing, one reason why my goal is BSL is because I realize that I don't want anything longer because I, too, am lazy and I already have to be delicate with what I have anyways. It would be too much work (for me) to have hair longer than that. I truly, honestly just want a healthier head of hair.

Perhaps the OP has a point: it's the individual. Some people are just meant to have long hair while others have to work a bit harder. Well, sometimes the "working harder" isn't worth it and we just have to resign ourselves to accepting the ways things are.

That's what I was thinking... mixing the powders with condition or with shampoo, as Serenity is going to do.

I'm going to boil the water and stir in the powders; spray it on and see what happens... more amla than shi, though. Ha!

Flogging! A word from the time period of Roots! :)

I agree. People always say my hair is long. An I thought that too until coming here. But my hair would never grow past BSL. Even though I have length I never took care of it. So I am hoping with better care and understanding it will get past that hurdle. I have always been low manipulation and little heat. I just didnt condition and wash regularly. My ends would dry up and I had to cut them.

Some people are tall and some are short.

Some women will have big breasts and some will not.

Some people have long hair naturally, and some don't.

That's just the way it is.

But I will say this, I bet that their hair always stays that length. For example, if it's always been APL, it never gets any futher. Or if it's always been MBL, it never gets waistlength.

I usually mix amla with conditoner and oil or some honey like paste and then put it on sit under the dryer fro 30 mins and then rinse out.

OH MY GOODNESS, I WAS JUST THINKING ABOUT THIS YESTERDAY!!! I see we are working at having long hair but I have a friend that puts no effort in her hair care but her has is just past BSL and I can't figure out why I have to work at it, I have made it to APL ( not full yet)for the first time in life and it has been a task just trying to find the products that work for my hair. Either way I'm just thankful my hair is growing but that is something I too would like to know. Things that make you go hmmmmm .

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought about this. I almost felt akward posting it.

THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR CHIMING IN... I LOVE YALL MAN!

Most the girls I have known who just have long hair without trying only get their hair washed, conditioned, and styled at the salon. So basically, I think they are doing "something right" by using low manipulation and not applying heat too much...since they are only having heat applied every week or two and in between they dont do anything to it. One girl I knew like that in high school could no longer afford weekly salon visits in college and her once thick, long, silky hair became broken off and thin. She wasnt able to maintain it on her own.

This is happening to one of my friends right now. This girl use to have nice long MBL hair. After having three kids and moving on her own as a single mother with no help finical from the fathers, her hair fell out to SL. I had to keep telling her she can do her own hair. She is slowly but surely starting to learn her own hair. She did her own relaxer for the first time ever last night and she was really happy with her self. I'm happy for her new found freedom.

I have a co worker who decided to grow her hair out this summer. She and I was at same length now she is past bra strap and I haven't made it to armpit, let alone full shoulder length. I had to tell her about herself at work yesterday. I was so pissed off, she does nothing, nothing just hasn't had time to cut it. all this work I been doing and I can't even get to Armpit its been 19 months and still crawling to get there. That mole on my back, well one inch from there is Armpit. April will make it 2 years, April is almost here!! She said its just genetics. she is white, there is another co worker who is growing her hair, I can't complain about her she is just a little past armpit but it took her a year to get there from neck length. She is white. I know I am going to have long hair, it is really in my genetics it just hasn't woken up yet. My entire family has long hair. Long thick wavy 3b-3c hair. Even the 4a have long hair what the heck is wrong with me.

I believe it is a combination of genetics and taking good care of their hair. Here is why I think this my sister had waist length hair as a child and as an adult she has BSL. My sister's cousin (my sister is tech. my half-sister) has hair down to her tailbone as an adult. My sister and her cousin have 4a hair. My sister and I had an aunt that had hair down to her tailbone. Most of the women on my mom's side of family have Sl or longer hair. On my father's side of the family I am and always the one with the longest hair even when I had a chin length bob :perplexed. Anyway, since long hair is present on both sides of my sister's family, I believe my sister and people like her are more destined to have long hair.

I have noticed that women with long hair take better care of their hair and have a more positive attitude towards their hair. My sister was the first person to introduce me to protective styling(buns and french rolls), roller setting, caruso, and washing once a week. Her cousin was the first person I saw that simple french braided her daughter's hair instead of the tight braids. Her daughter now has waist length hair. women with long hair have a tendency to have daughters with long hair. I have also noticed that mothers with long hair avoid hair trends popular with blacks, no tight braids, no relaxers or reduce the number of times to get a relaxer or the strength of the relaxer. Women with long hair sometimes sarcifrice style for health/length. They are not h**l bent on removing every wave, kink, or curl.

I would not compare us to latinas or Indians because most of them had long hair as a child and they rarely cut their hair short. Short to them is APL.

See the part in the bold. My DD has long hair, I'm like well my DD has long hair maybe I can have long hair too. I know my DD hair is the product of both side of her family. My hair is a 4a and my DD is a 3c. I know her hair being a 3c part of the reason why her hair is long. I can see the differences for myself. Her hair doesn't break off from knots. All you got to do it wet and grease her hair and you can comb right through it.

I tend to feel it is more psychosomatic. A little LOA for the hair. Our hair grows because we see it growing, and so we tend to be nicer to it, and leave it alone. Low to no manipulation, sticking with what works for us. When some more information comes along that we feel we can use, we might or might not. Still visualizing our hair growing, and it grows more, and so we stick to our regimen.... and the cycle continues.

Like we expect it grow. Period. Even with all of the methods, and products out there that are being used, people are buying them because they expect it to help them some way. And wanting our hair to grow we find better products, and forums to help us. We learn about washing the hair more often and on and on until our hair is on auto pilot, and we get the growth we saw from the get go. More wholistic growing...

That is a very good point. As the hair is growing and we can see it getting longer, we tend to take better care of it. I've never taken as good of care of my hair when it was shorter. Now that it has gotten *a little* longer, I find that I want to "up the challenge" and do an even better job. Right now, however, I want to concentrate on health because I've had a good length before but I tend to get frustrated if it looks thin or brittle or dry and ended up cutting it off. So far that hasn't happen and I hope I'm able to achieve good health *knocking on wood*.

@Blosssom: I will definitely let ya'll know what happens with the powder/shampoo combination. I will try and incorporate your tip of bowling the water and dissolving the powders. Then mixing in the shampoo and applying. Sounds like a good idea! :yep:

I was thinking about this the other day as well and this is what I came up with. I have a friend who's hair grows like a weed and I always thought it was b/c she is from Trini and is mixed with all different types of ethinicities. But the more I paid attention, the more I realized, she was a protective styler and low manipulator without even knowing it. She mainly kept her hair in buns and loose ponytails b/c she hated the way it felt on her neck. She would wear it down like the first 2 days (if even that) after a relaxer which she did every 6-8 weeks, wash it and DC every 2 weeks, and otherwise forget about it. So I am convinced that that's all one needs; patience and care

My BFF has always had very long, super thick hair- unless she cuts it- and even then it grows back super fast (even though she has a serious thyroid condition).
She is full African-American and has probably 3c, with a little 4a hair. She was hot combed as a kid and has worn a relaxer for at least the past 15 years. When we were kids her hair was butt length. In high school she kept it cut to midback length and that's usually how long its been. Now that we are on the back side of thirty she likes to keep it bra strap lenght and recently go it cut to shoulder (I freaked:perplexed- she loves it).

Anyway, she's done everything bad for her hair. She had blond higlights a few year ago. I've seen her wash her thick hair over her head in a sink, tangling it all over her head while shampooing and then detangling it with a fine-toothed comb and a brush!!!:nono: Still she has thick gorgeous long hair.

Her mom used to flat iron her hair and I would call to talk and her dad would tell me that "they can't come to the phone b/c they're over here cooking hair!":lachen: And its true b/c I've seen it and that flat iron would be smokin like a grill!!!

My BFF's sister has nice long hair too, but just not as long and thick as my BFF's. I think its genetic b/c no matter what she does that hair on her head grows.

My hair has definitely grown and retained lenght because of this site and my hard work. Some people are natural altheletes while others have to work hard at the craft. I am one who has to work hard at my craft of keeping my hair together.

I don't know why that is.

I agree with you 100%. If you go to the basketball courts you may see the best players there. Go to the pros and they are great, but work hard and practice every day (it's their jobs). I'll work hard and get to the pros with my hair!:yep:

Hi, Shell!!!

Well, ITA with what Ava said. For me, I have always been able to grow my hair to somewhere around APL reagardless of what I was or wasn't doing to it. BUT I've never been BSL. Why? Becasue although I was doing "something" right, most of what I was doing was wrong.

I will even use my sister as another example. (we have the same parents) - she has never been able to grow her hair past MAYBE neck length, but after about 4 years of proper haircare, maintenance and handling, she is well on her way to BSL. Her hair doesn't grow as fast as mine, but it IS growing and no one thought (not even her) she would ever have hair. And now that she knows how to properly take care of her hair, my neice has gorgeous hair (see siggy).

IMO, commitment and consistency is key when nature and genes aren't on your side.

Yes I think the answer is lo-mani:yep:

On the other hand look at all the things we DO or did to harm our hair:flatironing, weaves and braids(without proper maintenance),playing in hair ,wearing it out all the time, combing etc... you get the idea.

Many ladies here that are succesfully growing out their hair hear complaints that they never DO anything to their hair.Well that's the key to their success IMO... a constistent reggie and lo-mani.

I agree. I think girls with "long" hair are doing something right.

I believe there is definately some truth in what you have to say. . . as a child my hair was almost classic length. My mother would wash and condition it once a week, detangle it with a wide tooth comb, oil it with olive oil and then put it in one or two braids or a bun and wrap my hair every night- that's it. She would never let me get a relaxer like all the other girls, or braids, and if I wanted it straight she would rollerset it for me every so often. She only took me to the salon a handful of times and didn't even allow grease to come into our house. My mom's hair is 4a and she has always worn it somewhere between BSL and MBL, most what what she did to my hair, she also did to hers (with the exception being that she relaxes hers). Her mother, who had TBL into her teens before she cut it to her shoulders did the same things. I think you're correct in saying that women with long hair have daughters with long hair, because often mothers pass on what knowledge of haircare they have to their daughters.
