It can't be just me? Anyone else scared to buy products until you check with LHCF?

I saw Giovanni 50:50 Balanced Clarifying shampoo & 50:50 Balanced Hydrating Calming conditioner in Costco today, 33.5 ounces for $10.99 each.

I refused to buy them since all I read about was raves for the Giovanni Direct Leave-in. I bought the leave-in last week for $6 at wholefoods (8.5 ounce bottle) and DH remembered the packaging and that the smaller bottle was over $6.

Well, somehow both products jumped into our shopping cart. DH felt like it was a great deal for the price. DH plans to try the Giovanni shampoo & conditioner this weekend when he has his dread locks washed and retwisted. He says so long as neither product makes his hair itch (his stylist sometimes uses products that make his hair itch), then he will use the Giovanni products and he says I can use them too if I end up liking them.

I intend to wait to see what they do to his hair before I give them a try.

I really dont buy anything until I get a reviews from the lhcf ladies:yep: Dont use 50:50 as a clarifying shampoo it doesnt work. Trust me. use it as a regular shampoo not a clarifying shampoo

Re: It can't be just me? Anyone else scared to buy products until you check with LHCF

although most of the products that i buy are because of LHCF recommendations, i also will buy products based on what the ingredients are and if i think they might work for me.....and yes....i am a bonafide pj

Re: It can't be just me? Anyone else scared to buy products until you check with LHCF

Most of the products I have are things that I read about here before I bought them. Sometimes I read about a product here, then I put it on my list of things to buy. Or sometimes I see something while I'm out shopping or just browsing, then I come here and do a search for it.

Even if I buy a product without checking here first, I'll do a search for it here before I use it.

Lately I've been seeing a lot of infomercials for different flat irons and the Wen hair care system. I come here to read reviews.

:lachen: Raising my hand. I will pull out my blackberry with a quickness and do a quick search.:lachen:

It doesn't have to be hair products. I was re reading the dominican salon comments while my hair was being blowdried. I also did it last weekend when I was in the coach store. I am so indecisve some times.

Re: It can't be just me? Anyone else scared to buy products until you check with LHCF

I like hearing from my LHCF sistas as well about a certain product before purchasing it, but I have purchased products based on the ingredients without any reviews here. It turns out that I end up liking them if the ingredients are favorable.

Re: It can't be just me? Anyone else scared to buy products until you check with LHCF

No. Although I appreciate the reviews on here, if there is a product I'm interested in based on the description, ingredients and brand reputation then I will purchase. I found some hidden gems that are hardly mentioned on the board. If I want to try something new, I'm gonna try it. I'm just too impatient to wait for someone else to try it especially since everyone's hair reacts differently to products. I could miss out on something that may not have worked on someone else but worked excellently for me.

Re: It can't be just me? Anyone else scared to buy products until you check with LHCF

Yes. Of course there are exceptions to this. But for the most part I come here first :yep:

:lachen::lachen:So funny. About three hours ago, I walked around Ulta after picking up a Mizani product that was recommended on this forum for breakage. I walked around for about 45 minutes looking at EVERYTHING, reading ingredients and cringing sometimes. :ohwell: It was my first time there and I saw a lot of the products reviewed and recommended on this forum.:yep:

One of the 'helpers' in the store told a customer to 'brush her hair really hard while wet in the shower, that should detangle it'. :wallbash:After the 'helper' left, I told this older white lady to please not brush her hair wet in the shower. I told her if she did anything in the shower with her hair just use her fingers or a shower comb. The two women looked at me and I felt silly. I tell you, not five minutes later this woman came to me with a shower comb and asked me if this would work. I looked at it and it was seamless so I told her to get it. I was laughing inside because she listened to little old me.

I always check the forum. All I have to do is look at pictures from last summer and feel the grieving for my dry a$$ locs that I cut off and remember how much I didn't know until I started looking here. Maybe once I reach a goal than I'll be able to purchase something without checking.

But until then, search, advanced search and search again.:drunk:

Re: It can't be just me? Anyone else scared to buy products until you check with LHCF

Yea, I do the same thing. I know I bought some conditioner but I didnt open until I got home and searched for it on lhcf and after I saw that the cons outweighed the pros I took it back and got a refund:yep:

Re: It can't be just me? Anyone else scared to buy products until you check with LHCF

yes!!

I always do searches and read multiple threads before purchasing any hair products, vitamins....or just about anything!

I did it earlier this week before I bought some Charles Worthington conditioner that was on sale at Walgreens!

I haven't used it yet--but if it doesn't work for me, I can always use it to rinse out my henna/indigo treatments! Not sure how moisturizing it is, but it smells yummy tho! :lick:

Re: It can't be just me? Anyone else scared to buy products until you check with LHCF

Yes, I have made it a habit to use the lhcf search to know which products to buy. I actually found this site while doing a google search about a certain product.

Re: It can't be just me? Anyone else scared to buy products until you check with LHCF

omg...you have no idea. lol. im always trying to steal my SO's sidekick. He cant understand why i need the internet just to go buy some "hair stuff". lmao.

Sometimes i wind up putting every in my hands down and leaving the store because i couldn't remember what was said about it on the forum or if it's something that looks good i won't buy it until check here first.

Sometimes it's a bad thing though. lol. i have WAAAAY too many things on my shelf right now because of good reviews and i seriously have to stop lol.

Yes, I have made it a habit to use the lhcf search to know which products to buy.

I've gotten into the habit of checking in the store; then I'll check this forum or vice versa.

It makes it easier for me to listen to my stylist, because some of the products he recommends me to use are discussed on this board. :woot:

same here!

Re: It can't be just me? Anyone else scared to buy products until you check with LHCF

BEFORE I buy almost ANY product I have to check here or makeupalley or amazon or eopinions or anywhere I can find some reviews. I'm just become compulsive like that. :wallbash:

Re: It can't be just me? Anyone else scared to buy products until you check with LHCF

I don't buy ANYTHING hair related until I get the thumbs up here first! There have been many, many days were I put a product back on the shelf (Mizani Hydrafuse most recent) because I didn't research it here first.

Re: It can't be just me? Anyone else scared to buy products until you check with LHCF

I absolutely have to do a search on LHCF first b/f I make a purchase. I hate to waste money and I'm not too good at deciphering the ingredient list yet so until I get better at that I have to rely on LHCF for my reviews.

Re: It can't be just me? Anyone else scared to buy products until you check with LHCF

I love reviews and I do this with just about everything. Hair products, cosmetics, electronics. It saves money! Occasionally if something has really good ingredients and a great price and I haven't seen any reviews I will give it a whirl.

Re: It can't be just me? Anyone else scared to buy products until you check with LHCF

:lachen::lachen:I would say scared.....But it saves you some money....I don't want to buy something and 85 % or more of the reviews are horrible....It's like I have my own review team at LHCF....:lachen::lachen:

Re: It can't be just me? Anyone else scared to buy products until you check with LHCF

naw, not really. . . but i do take all the posts about ingredients with me mentally into the store. . . i spend FOREVER in the aisles. . . i was in the "ethnic" aisle, and everything I flipped over had mineral oil or petroleum in it, all the mousses had alcohol, the moisturizers didn't have water as the first ingredient, and I put down ANY oil that says it "moisturizes hair" :lachen:

so there is a chick in the aisle too, and I keep having to say "excuse me" because i keep having to walk in front of her and stuff. and apparently she had been staring at me for a while. . . and she said that I had picked up a few things and "scoffed and scrunched up" my nose. :lachen:she asked me what was I looking for. I said I was lookin at the ingredients, and she was like why? I said mineral oil is cheap and does nothin for the hair and oils don't actually moisturize. she just looked at me like I was crazy, and I went back to shopping. . .

and I peeped her cart, she took my advice even though she gave me the stuck face. :lachen: mission accomplished.

Re: It can't be just me? Anyone else scared to buy products until you check with LHCF

and sidenote, I haven't really seen anyone discuss it, and if they have tried it, I would love someone to tell me what they think of it. . . i just bought smooth and shine polishing silk fusion leave-in. . . and i TOTALLY love it. (i tried to find a picture of the exact one I have and it's not coming up)

Re: It can't be just me? Anyone else scared to buy products until you check with LHCF

not really. i usually search for ingredient listings. i don't pay attention to most product reviews because many times it's just hype or the lastest bandwagon. too often i've seen a member rave about a product being the greatest thing since sliced bread and a couple months later when the product is no longer popular it's the worst crap they ever used. or i see a product rave but the member mixed the product with another product(s). that makes the review useless to me because i don't know if the item produces the same result when used by itself. most of the products that work for the majority of board don't work for me(trust me i've tried quite a few). but there are a few members whose hair seems to like many of the same products as mine. i will pay attention to their recomendations.

Re: It can't be just me? Anyone else scared to buy products until you check with LHCF

Yep, this is me too. Or if I read bad reviews I won't buy it in the first place.

Re: It can't be just me? Anyone else scared to buy products until you check with LHCF

YEP!:yep: LHCF def helps me make informed decisions. Thnx ladies!

Re: It can't be just me? Anyone else scared to buy products until you check with LHCF

Kinda sorta.

I check ingredients first. If I like them AND if I am unsure about the product, I will search here and on other boards for reviews.

Most times if the ingredients are agreeable and I feel good about the product, I will go ahead and try it.

There are sooo many different products and opinions on the board that I just try to stick with looking at the ingredients first.

Re: It can't be just me? Anyone else scared to buy products until you check with LHCF

No it's no just you I do the same thing. I usually google it first to check the ingredients.

Re: It can't be just me? Anyone else scared to buy products until you check with LHCF

Not scared per se - just cautious:look: Honestly it doesn't stop me when the PJ takes over and decides the product looks:lick: But generally yeah, I keep in mind what products get bad reviews and steer waaaaaayyyy clear of them:grin:

That's me, too! :)

Re: It can't be just me? Anyone else scared to buy products until you check with LHCF

At first yes, now not so much. Through the site I learned more about what works for me. I feel well armed, so I check the ingredients first and pick things that fit my needs. I still do searches, but some things that are raved about aren't for me and vice versa. I do still keep an eye out for new products that may interest me in the future.
