I have been noticing something lately. I live in a predominantly white area and most of the women 30 years and older wear their hair SL or shorter. I have been looking around and the only ones that wear their hair past SL are the teenagers. In fact, I had some random woman ask me for hair advice at the store the other day because her daughter needed help with caring for her long hair and mom did not have a clue.

So my question is, have you noticed that fewer women 30 years or older (of any ethnicity/race) are wearing their hair longer than SL??

That's not to say that you are not wearing your hair long or want to wear your hair long, just the women you see on the street and even on TV.

If you have not noticed, take a look around today and report back here with your findings!

Hmmmmm! I never really thought about it :ohwell:......but since reading this post I'm becoming a lil more observant and do notice alot of older women with their hair shorter :yep:.... I don't know why. Maybe some by choice and some by force :perplexed. IMO.... if that's how they want to wear their hair, then so be it.

I have enough to focus on... transitioning has its own issues.

On some women, tons of hair just ages them. Some of the most fierce over 40 women that I know have the baddest short cropped hairdos. Having long hair, especially when it's unstyled just looks boring and common.

I do notice that as some women age, they chop their hair off.

I've definitely noticed this, I pay attention to everyone's hair in public since joining the forum and for the most part, I usually see teenagers and young adults w/ really long hair, women 35 and older I notice has shoulder length or shorter hair.

Yes I have noticed this. I have heard once from an YT co-worker that at a certain age it’s appropriate to cut the hair shoulder length or shorter...she called it "mom hair" lol.

But all of my aunts are shoulder length or shorter and most woman here at my job are shoulder or shorter except for Indian woman. They all have hair down to their tale bones. I haven't seen not ONE with hair shorter than BSL.

I guess at a certain age short cuts are considered mature and longer hair is seen as youthful maybe.

I agree & I have noticed that the over 30 crowd rocks shoulder length or shorter. As stated above I also agree that "Having long hair, especially when it's unstyled just looks boring and common." Sometimes long hair ages the woman if she doesn't know what to do with it.

I haven't noticed. The only people I see with short hair are black women every other group keep their hair long and I'm not talking about people who get short hair styles. The only people of older age that I see with short hair are usually women who are in powerful positions. Normally these women are directors, managers, executives...I noticed these women, who are normally 40+, have a tendency to keep their hair short.

Haven't really paid attention in the streets but in my family all of my Aunts cut their hair.

My mother and her 5 sisters were all bra strap and lower and now they're all rocking short cropped styles or a little above shoulder length.

They're range in age from 50-70.

In todays economy I see less woman going to the salon to get their hair done, I question if the long hair is real or weave? Women will get short bob cuts and let it grow out for six months is their hair grows evenly, others just pull it up into a twist style.

Most of the white business women I know keep their hair short. The Latina business women I know that are over 35 wear their hair long or at least shoulder length. The AA business women in my office over 35 go either way.

I am 38 and I don't intend of going with what everyone else is doing. God knows I see enough soccer moms in my area with pants up to their waist and I'm certainly not going to do that either LOL

:yep: I used to think it was an unspoken rule that "fashionable women" cut their hair at 40 to SL or shorter to look youthful.

Yes, I have noticed this.

I have also read a craigslist rant from a yt man who was listing 5011 things men dislike about women. One of the things he mentioned is that it seems soon after a woman marries, she chops off her hair and stops wearing makeup!

I won't be cutting mine, that's for sure.

When I see a woman of any race with hair that's about MBL - WL, it's such a rarity that it catches me off guard. Likewise, if I see a black or biracial woman with really big natural hair (afro-textured/3c - type 4), I'm just in awe. It's not common at all.

Anyway, it seems that many non-black women I see on a daily basis of any age are usually full SL or APL. Older women typically tend to stick with full NL - full SL hair. It seems they find a length that they like and stick to that instead of actively growing the hair out. Now and again, I see some BSLs (on women of any age) but not as often as the aforementioned lengths.

I've noticed that once YT women have kids they usually cut their hair to that "mom bob" because blow drying and flat ironing everyday is something they no longer have time for.

Looking around my very diverse office I notice that the Hispanic, Asian, and Indian women still all have long hair well past 30. Most of the short cuts are worn by 30+ white women and black women of all ages.

i have definitely noticed this! older women, and most moms, seem to cut their hair off for some reason. i think its so ugly! i call it the mom cut. ew or when they cut it so short and it looks like they are using those sponge rollers to make those old gramma curls. when i was younger i told myself that i would never chop my hair off once i become a mom and wife. i like my hair.

Long hair does take time and effort. Shoot, you think there aren't days I don't wanna go back to my 2 inches of hair? To just roll out of bed and not fuss with it? Especially as I wear my hair pulled back most of the time.

I totally get the appeal, especially of a cut that flatters your face and doesn't take long to do. And especially for moms. There are so many other things to deal with, and moms usually end up putting themselves on the back burner. The main ones I see do it have more than one daughter - how many heads of hair are you really trying to spend your morning on? Personally, my hair is my indulgence. Yeah detangling and styling may take time... but I see it as time I spend on ME.

Also, it's always an extreme that I see... either moms have hair above the shoulders (pixie/bob), or below the brastrap and keep it in a protective style (even if it's just a simple bun or single braid). It's all about ease... :yep:

I see both. I was going back in my head from my mom's old dental office, and most of the women there had long hair (1 Latina, 1 White, 1 Black (mom :grin), and 1 Phillipina). My mom was the oldest, but they were all over 30. Today they all still wear their hair long, though one of them seriously needs to keep hers short. It's so stringy long, and looks really pretty short. She, like many, has a long hair fetish, so she lets it grow regardless of how it looks.

In my profession, I see stay at home moms with longer hair, and working moms with shorter. A generalization, to be sure, but overall pretty accurate to me. My former associate, who is Indian, had MBL hair when I met her but cut it to her ears. I loved it! Brought her curls out so much.

I do agree that there was an unspoken (though sometimes definitely written) rule about how long hair at certain age was either unattractive or too juvenile, but I tend to only see it applied with women 40 and over. I can't say I won't ever cut my hair; I'm lucky I look good with long and short cuts, so who knows?

Yes i have noticed this "short hair phenom" with mid thirties + women.
I hope i dont go that route. The women on my dad's side keep their hair very long but on my mom's side they all chopped it off.

Yes, I've noticed this as well. I've heard my white and Hispanic co-workers discuss this and they have this thing about cutting your hair once you reach a certain age. I never understood it but I guess what some of you all have mentioned is true. Its all about shorter hair being youthful and longer hair aging you.

They even talk about white celebrities who have decided to keep their hair long, ie "She's too old for long hair"

Yes ive noticed my great aunts all wear a short cut. My grandmother still wears her long hair and so did my great grandmother. All of my aunts except for 1 wear short cuts. The ones with shorts cuts say its easier for them to maintain. now that they are older.

I've seen short and long in real life, media and advertisement.

Depends on the woman.

We have quite a few ladies here well over 40 and rocking long hair.

In my family I have both, short and long hair, natural, relax and other.

A lot of times older women don't wear it long because it won't grow. Older people lose thier hair from illnesses and medications they have to take and from the slowing of the growth rate.

A lot of them resort to wearing those cheap wigs that look like they sleep in them and never comb them.

People are losing thier hair left and right these days, thats why growth aids are a million dollar business.

When I worked in a predominantly white salon I was amazed at how many of those women had tracks to camoflauge thinning in those horrible bouffants they wore.

I think some of look even look older with shorter hair because then your eye goes to every wrinkle, bag and crevice they have.:nono:

I wrote a blog about this once. I have struggled with this as an almost 40 year old this year. I always had longish hair but am only serious about growing it LHCF long (WL) now. I just want to see if I can do it.

It's been a challenge though. I have two daughters and I do three heads some days. Thing is, I don't know what to do with short hair. The last time I had it super short, I had time, $$ for upkeep, and I wasn't overweight. Now I'm short on time, I spend my money in other places, and I think my face is still too fat for a short do.

So now, I have learned how to master the updo's, twists, buns, etc. When I want to wear it out and long, I can. Going short is scary to me at this point in my life. Maybe when I get my body and confidence back --Maybe when I'm 50!

I think you find women of every race other than Black wearing their hair shorter as they grow up because they most likely had long hair all of their life. Not only that, if they cut it off short, like 1 or 2 years later, there hair is longer again.

Whereas Black women, or Black American women, tend to want longer hair as they get older. I know on this site, we want longer hair because most likely we grew up with shorter hair.

That's my opinion though.

I've noticed that women cut their hair off when they reach late 30s to early 40s. A coworker of mine even said that long hair looks weird on older people. I don't understand that logic...to me, when you cut it short like that it makes you look older! I don't care what the trend is, once i get to WL i'm wearing that length to the grave!

I think it also depends on the face shape. 4 me short hair made me look older because I had gained alot of weight. Now that my hair is sl I don't look as old and I get tons of comps....
