Calling All That Rollerset their own hair

I want to learn to roller set my own hair. I've tried it on others and it was a fail. :perplexed The rollers were floppy. I also need some advice on some good setting lotions that don't leave your hair hard. I am natural so help from natural tips from other natural heads is really needed, but any tips would be much appreciated. TIA!

ETA: I want to avoid having to use direct heat to get the roots straight. So any tips on that would be appreciated as well!.

I would replace the setting lotion with a good leave-in conditioner (and a little serum) and make sure each section you roll is wet rather than damp.

Also Slide in Clips hold the rollers better or you can do the anchor method (attaching the rollers to one another for a secure hold).

The way flexirods are made, floppiness shouldn't be a problem. I also use those clip on holders if I use regular curlers.

I also recommend a leave in over a setting lotion. I have never had good luck with setting lotions.

After a little research, I'm beginning to think that when you're natural a flat iron is necessary to get the roots straight. Is that true? Bumping for more answers.

Here's a rollersetting tutorial I posted in my fotki:

For the most part, I use very diluted lottabody setting lotion, a leave-in (lacio lacio or cantu shea butter), and a serum (beyond straight or chi silk infusion). Normally, if my hair is kept to taut on the roller and my rollerset is neat, I don't have to flat-iron my hair. Doing a silk wrap helps to straighten it out even more. Now that my hair has gotten longer, I don't roll upwards anymore for the mohawk section and I roll the sides going up instead of down. Here's a couple of photos of alternate placements:

What helped me the most was watching macherieamour's dvd, but you can easily find tuts on youtube. Also I think the use of the serum keeps the hair smooth more so than for heat protection. It does seem like most serums are heat protectants though.

THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH! i wanted to post this right now!

I'm sure this sounds silly, but ... what do you mean you don't roll upwards anymore in the mohawk section?? If you rolled upwards then wouldnt the curl have flipped up instead of under? I've seen someone else say this and IDGI :ohwell: ???
Also ... same Q about the sides.. how do you get the curl to flip under if you roll it that way? Or do you wrap it after you take the rollers out?
