Well any flat iron can burn your hair if used improperly.

But, you should use a high quality flat iron with ceramic plates (or at least ceramic coated) and make sure it has a temperature setting. Also, you'll want to make sure your hair is healthy before using heat and dcing is a must. A really good heat protectant is also necessary and will help lower your chances of burning your hair.

If you do a search for different things (heat protectant, flat ironing natural hair, etc. etc.) you'll get lots of threads back. Here are some links to get you started:

Invest in a quality 100% ceramic flat iron *make sure the plates are FULLY ceramic and not just plated, although every brand wants to claim ceramic now they always say somewhere on the box weather or not their just plated or fully ceramic*

What I do is I blow dry, press my roots and then flat iron and I end up with very silky flowy results, I recommend IC Fantasia Heat Protectant (the Pink Bottle) I recommend the serum and the spray:yep:

Being natural doesn't have to mean your in a fro 24/7, although that can be absolutely gorgeous as well some people are like me and like to switch up the style/look weekly. I had my hair straightened and flowing for the last 3 weeks or so and now I've braided my hair in 12 or a braid-out tomorrow, because the new length is a little obtrusive for my fast paced student life lol so I wanted it to shrink up a bit....

Anywhoo those are my tips!:yep:
