Naturals (4ab), what is your secret weapon to keep your straight hair from reverting?

What are those special products that you use when you flat iron and want to keep it straight for a couple of days? What products keep it from poofing back up? What products help you get it straight? What techniques help you get it straight?

Would like to especially hear from ladies with very highly textured hair, somewhere in the 4s. TIA.

Blowing my hair out with my Andis section by section as the first step is tremendous it gets my coils very very straight, I follow that with my MaxiGlide taking small sections and that gives me an awesome press that lasts till my next wash day:yep:

I stay away from humidity (thats the easiest in the fall and wintertimes) if its a very humid day or raining I wear a cute beanie hat to preserve the press. I pin curl the hair up at night daily and tie with a satin scarf every night.

As for products, I definitely recommend IC Pink bottle heat protectant serum (blowdrying) and Spray(flatironing).

tried that...didn't do a thang for me. CHI works much better for me but I'm still searching for the perfect product.

I steam my hair for 30-45 minutes before pressing (I either have it done at the salon or I do it myself before going in). Stylists have used no-name flat irons (i.e. not a FHI or CHI) and my hair still comes out bone straight and my hair holds moisture so it's not absorbing much from the air. Also a good press really starts with a great blow out for me personally which is all about technique.

As far as products, I really like Motions Heat Seeker Spray Protectant and Redken Smooth Down Head Glide Serum. My last press was with the Design Essentials line.

The flat iron job in my siggy lasted 12 days in Florida during August.

Instead of air drying in braids I find it works better to band. The hair conmes out straighter and it won't take as many passes with the flat iron to get the hair straight. For after care I used serums but I'm not sure if those moisturize so once my hair grows back I plan to use coconut oil on my flat ironed hair.

I am searching with you :)

When I was relaxed, pretty much any serum would work...or castor oil Now that I am natural these are the products I plan to "try".

1. Ultrasheen Creme press....this was an oldey but a goodie for what I have heard.

2. Sabino MB---I read your previous posts..but my GF uses it and LOVES it..so I will see.

3. Aphogee Green Tea Keratin reconstructor---this has gotten good reviews on the board as of lately too.

4. Maybe Mizani's Thermasmooth line...I don't know about this one yet.

5. Paul Mitchell's leave in serum--I have had a sample size of this forever. I used it once or twice when I was relaxed and loved it..lets see how "Roxy" likes it now.

It seems that for a successful flat iron u need the following things:
Clean hair is a must.
Slightly Damp or Dry hair...common sense but still should be noted.
A leave in--spray or creamy but for me it ensures soft hair..not just straight hair.
A serum to seal in the juices(lol) and prevent reversion.

The green tea keratin spray worked wonders for me. I have a mix of 3c and 4a on my head. I can get it strait and now, since wrapping it, the strait look lasted more than a day. That is a major breakthrough for me!

I DC with ORS Replinishing conditioner and follow up with porosity control (non porus hair doesn't absorb as much humidity from the air). I moisturize with profective mega growth lotion and use paul mitchell straight works, super skinny relaxing balm and super skinny serum. paul mitchell also has a shampoo and conditioner in the super skinny line but i found that it doesn't really make much difference in the final result. i prefer to air dry at night and flat iron the next day. i use either a chi or a fhi ceramic flat iron, the fhi has temperature control but the chi doesnt. my hair can stay straight up to 2 wks depending on if i wrap it every night and if i wear it up on humid days. i don't really mind if my roots get lifted because my hair looks fuller.

I believe John Frieda's Frizz Ease Serum is my secret weapon. I know wet-to-dry presses followed my a serum give me a good press, and I believe the serum is what keeps my hair from reverting till wash day.

Yes, thank you so much for your reply! I went to a Paul Mitchell school to get my hair done about a month ago. The woman used all those products on me and got my hair relaxer day straight. I couldn't believe it! It also stayed completely straight even when I exposed it to intense moisture and everything.

I couldn't figure out exactly which ones she used. I have been going back and forth to the site trying to figure out. But I believe it may be the combo you just mentioned. She also used some sort of leave in on me to help detangle and do something special to my texture but I don't remember. And she used the tea tree poo and condish.

Along with the right products- (whatever they are, i am still trying to figure it out-) technique makes all the difference.

I am transitioning, but my hair only stays straight when done by a professional....

I always make sure I do a really thorough DC before straightening. I stretch the kinks out gradually during the process to the end result will be as straight/smooth as possible.

Products:

SMB (orig)

Coconut oil mixed with Olive oil (added after straightening, applied to ends nightly)

Dry Shampoo - cleans up the scalp, soaks up any excess oil or moisture and keeps hair smelling fresh.

I don't remember honestly. She barely let me see the bottles of the styling products that she used. I am assuming that she used the skinny products bc those are the only ones in their line for straightening (please correct me if I'm wrong). I know she used something special to detangle too.

So I was just going to buy them and do some trial and error until it was figured out. My hair was never so straight. It felt wonderful and healthy. And it stayed straight through the week which is unheard of even for my relaxed hair.

I'm planning on buying them in the next month or so. I will let you all know how it goes. I know they work...just gotta get my technique down with them.

I am a natural with very curly hair and this is the ONLY product that will allow me to go out in the dampness and not revert! (SABINO MOISTURE BLOCK) ok ok sorry for shouting but I get soo excited about this stuff! I would not even bother rollersetting my hair if it wasn't for this stuff! When I used to rollerset w/out using it, I would have to walk out in the morning with a hat on my head so my hair would not touch the moisture in the air. Now I can just rock my rollerset without looking crazy with a hat on my head all the time!

I tried Sabino Moisture Block many times but could never get the right amount such that my hair was too oily/heavy. So far the only thing that works is my Brazilian Keratin Treatment (Rejuvenol) which I have not done since August 25. I had a flat iron last 9 days with BKT.

I am in curly twist until 2010 but I do plan to use BKT again.

So are you saying that you press your hair damp or do you let it dry first?

I mixed JBCO and Fantasia IC heat protectant for flatironing, then to maintain it I've been mixing JBCO with Fantasia IC Olive Oil serum that I apply to my hair daily once I take down my pincurls....anybody living in the Philly area knows that it's been raining mostly all week (I flatironed my hair last sunday 10/25/09) and my hair hasn't reverted yet. I'm not gonna front I am shocked.

If I steam prior to going to the salon I steam my hair, go to the salon with damp hair and she will rinse, wash, condition, blow dry, and flat iron. So the steaming is like a pre-poo treatment.

If I have the steaming done at the salon then the stylist will wash, DC, steam, blow dry, and flat iron.

I used oil once prior to the blow dry and flat iron. Yes my hair was straight. Very straight. But it didn't revert quite right. Generally I use CHI silk infusion and my hair 100% reverts back. So I am no longer a fan of oil BEFORE the heat. Maybe after. :nono:

Re: Naturals (4ab), what is your secret weapon to keep your straight hair from revert

I use Sabino, but I have found that by NOT following the directions, I get better results. I take tiny nearly dry sections, apply the smallest (I do mean small!) amt of SMB on each section from root to tip, combing through to the ends well. Then...one pass with my Sedu Revolution and I have really silky hair.

(I know this thread is nothing without pics, but I will have to post my next results later this week. I am not the best pictographer... sorry...)

I have no reversion all week long and maintain by rolling at night...

I always feel sad when people have bad experiences with Sabino. It's a truly amazing product! I have to remember that his models are usually not completely kinky/nappy/curly, so I adjust my methods to my hair type...

I hope this is helpful...
