How Should We Live
in Light of God’s Purpose?

Many people may not want to accept this as truth, but everything in this world will one day meet its end. Everything on this earth will eventually pass away. The stuff we store here on earth will never find its way to our eternal destination and should never be considered as more important than this destination. Please understand me. It’s not wrong to have nice things, as long as the nice things don’t have you.

Instead of focusing all of our efforts, gifts and talents on the world, our purpose should have divine priorities. We must let our view of eternity affect how we live in the present. Because heaven is holy, we need to practice holiness now. Because heaven is eternal, we need to live eternally now. First John 3:3 admonishes those looking forward to Jesus Christ’s return to purify themselves while they wait.

God wants us to keep ourselves spiritually clean so that we can help a sin-sick world. Just as surgeons scrub up before performing surgery to protect their patients, Christians must have clean hands and hearts to help others. Now, that doesn’t mean that your hands will never get dirty. Believers do sin, but genuine faith means that you will cleanse your life by confession and forgiveness.

SCRIPTURE READINGS
John 16:1-16
Romans 11:26-36; Psalm 99
1 Thessalonians 4:13-17; Romans 10:1-11
