Tips for the Long Journey of APL to BSL

I see a lot of threads about how to approach APL from SL and EL to NL but I searched and didn't see any specific tips for going from SL to APL. It should be easy, since a lot of us have gotten this far, but hey knowledge is power.

What did you ladies do to get from APL to bsl quickly?

I have been very consistent with protective styling all through out my hair journey. There are different opinions on where BSL really is so some people might get there faster than others because of that.

I thought I had a long way to go to get to BSL, until the other day, I read someone say that you should measure below the shoulder blade for a true measurement of BSL. It made sense because people's bra straps are in different places on their body. I measured my hair and I'm about an inch from BSL! My bra must be too low in the back.

I don't do protective styles because they don't look good to me. My hair is not thick, so buns dont look right yet. And at 44 years old, I'm not walking around in braids.

I do keep my hair washed, conditioned, and moisturized. And that has helped me combat dryness and retain all of my length and growth.

I'm on the APL to BSL path also; I think what will get me there is doing the same things that got me to APL: bunning, DCing, cowashing. I'm not getting excited and thinking that I can do all the things that I didn't do to reach this point (like excessive heat).

Pretty much what everyone has said. I am almost BSL and the biggest thing for me has been protective styling (buns and braids) and moisturizing my ends. Coconut oil has been my best friend. And limited products and styling.

I'm on this journey too, I have to say protective styles----I hate buns though, and it bothers my nape like crazy...so I gotta figure something out what to do now, my hair doesn't like co-washing, but I use a gentle shampoo with no sulfates, dcing with heat, then conditioning after I shampoo, min or no direct heat, and basically no bothering the hair, I hope to be full bsl by the end of the year or this time next year.....oh yea and I do use a growth aid.....and I will add working out and eating right cuz I'm going to get right for now on.....

my regimen has been pretty much the same since the beginning of my journey. i know they are taboo, but i feel growth aids really help me in achieving my goals. i've used MN and currently use MT and of course essential oils (specifically rosemary, tea tree and peppermint)

The main things that helped me get from APL to BSL:
1. Low manipulation - comb only on wash day
2. Keep it up - I don't bun consistently, so I always wore it in a clip, or ponytail
3. Moisturize/seal ends
4. Less trims - I usually do it every relaxer (8-9) weeks or less if it's in great shape (4 months)

low mani which translates into washing once a week , detangling on washing days and braid on washing days , where my hair up as much as possible! Keeping it simple which means I dont use 10 different products ..I stick to the basics and tweak my regimen according to my hair needs...i.e acv when my hair needs it which is every blue moon.

:)

You and Kinkerbelle have some truly beautiful hair. I can't wait until I have a bit of "hang" to boast of in pics....

*sigh*

Thanks for the tips.

What tips would you give to other woman who don't want to do protective styles? I want to achieve BSL and I feel like the only way I can do this is via protective styles, but I dislike them intensely because they don't look good on me. Thanks in advance.

I never did true protective styles. I just mainly kept it up in a jaw clip.
Even now, if i wear my hair down for work or weekends, I put it up in a clip or ponytail holder when I'm alone at my desk or in the car.

I never did the protective style thing because I have to have the flexibility of wearing my hair down for work. Since I'm a no heat user, I have to make my rollersets last at least a week, and I never mastered the bun and how you can easily take it back to a rollerset look without losing all of your curls.

Protective styling and limited heat is the only way (for me). I swear, i hung at APL for like years but now that I stop using heat (maybe once every 4-6 weeks), wear wash n go's or buns on a regular basis my hair has taken off.

Um.......I thought APL when at least the majority...like more than a few strands or your hair reaches the top of your 'pit.:ohwell: thats jus wat i think

Keep tha tips comin ladies im not yet APL but i'm pretty close!!

Keep the tips coming, I'm hoping to make BSL by the end of the year ! For me, I got this far by moisturizing/sealing my ends. That was the biggest factor for me, I'm not really into protective styles, I want to enjoy my length at every length.

Me and you are >>>>>>here<<<<:yep:

Or lord....in less than 2 months it would have been a YEAR since I first posted this. AND IM STILL APL! I'm doing something terribly wrong lol

Why would growth aids be taboo? If they work for you then use them.

Protective styles moisturising ends and sealing with coconut oil/shea butter mixture and keeping them tucked away worked for me.

I was trying to keep my hair off my shoulders to prevent trimming while moving my head. I am bunning again to try and get to WL this year.

When you have a lot of NG, do you think it would be allright to flat iron the NG only? I would like to use the 1.5" flat iron to do a long stretch and make my demarcation line match when I have 1.5" of NG (12 weeks post)

For me, staying away from heat and low-manipulation is key. I'm not sure how much co-washing played into it but I was very consistent with co-washing twice a week and damp bunning.

For me, I found that low manipulation and protective styling really helped. :yay:
I cut out the shampoo and only co-wash. Detangle once a week after my weekly DC and washing session.
I mainly bunned and did a few twists (kinky twist extensions) and one weave (for 5 weeks, lol!) during the months between APL and BSL.
Mostly, prayer and buns......remember to stay consistent and you will reap the rewards!
