Long time dominican stylist BUSTED (long)!

I had been going to the same dominican salon for about 15 years. When I moved away I continued to come back, but only for touch-ups. My regular stylist left and all of the girls at the salon gave me the "she went to DR" line, so I thought that I'd never see her again.

After getting my hair done one day, I was walking to my mother's house and spotted my regular stylist. I was thrilled to find that she had her own salon and it was only around the corner from my mother.

I'm a loyal customer, stick with the same stylist unless they disappear, so I expect good service. I also tip all of the girls really well, because I respect the work that they do, but this last visit left me wanting to plant a foot in a very dark place.

I called ahead, as usual, to say that I'd be there to get my hair done, but didn't realize that it was the Puerto Rican Day parade weekend and got stuck in nasty traffic. Needless to say, by the time I actually got to my destination, I was heated, because I had to go half way away around manhattan just to get to my mother's house

Ok, so I'm really ready to have my hair look good, after fighting traffic on both ends of the trip. My girl relaxed my hair, conditioned it and it came out nice and silky, but something wasn't right with the colourshines color that she poured out. It just didn't look right.

Digressing a little: for the past several months, I've been asking my girl in both English and Spanish, if she was applying colourshines red-ality and she insisted that she was, but it wasn't taking because of the hormones due to pregnancy. I didn't believe her, because my hair holds color, like a sponge holds water.

Anyway, she pours this really dark stuff in a bowl and I turn the bottle around to see "wine-red"

The heffer has been lying to me for months!!

Ok, I told her next time I'm bringing my color with me; no questions asked. But this is where I really feel the urge to kick coming on...she says that my hair needs a trim and I don't argue with her, because I haven't been really taking care of the ends. Also, she never really asks to cut it, because I always get a dusting here in PA, but knew that I needed a little more than a dusting this time.

Why, oh why, did that wench cut of 4 inches !!!!

Ok, so now I'm over it...my bob cut, is crisper than it's ever been in history, but it's shorter than I planned on having it.

She does a good job with my relaxer and does a killer blow out, so I'm going to give her one last try, by bringing in all of my own products.

Am I being too nice?

NO! NO! NO! She lied to you once you should not trust her again to do your hair!! How do you know she will USE your products when you bring them?! Cuting the 4 inches off was pay back for your expousing her using the wrong dye.

You can do the blow out yourself if you want. Get some lotta Body ready to use or delute the professional version with half water, or any other setting lotion you like. Coat your hair with it and use the biggest rollers you can use that will make at least one full roll on your length hair. Get under a dryer and let dry to the touch. Come out of the dryer take a blow dryer and a brush and blow out your hair smooth.

With pratice you will have it down. But what ever you do don't go back, when your insticts tell you something listen to them.

Donda, I'm good with my blowouts, it's the chemicals that I shy away from. But, your point about her lying really has me a little peeved. I could even understand if there was a communication problem, but I told her exactly what I expected in SPANISH.

I can forgive lying to you once about the color but why not buy it and use it the rest of the times. Did she just not feel like buying Redality? I think these hairdressers get too comfortable.

Hormones is not what causes chemical and color not to take when you are pregnant/nursing. Apparently, your body is more acidic sometimes when you are pregnant and that could cause any growth you've had since becoming pregnant to be resistant to coloring or chemicals. Do not let them fools make you think your entire hair-shaft (hair that's been on your head for years) is resistant when you've only been pregnant for a number ofmonths. Anyway--I read in Shamboosie that the solution is to shampoo 48 hours before to get some of the acidity out of the hair and then the hair should be more accepting of the color or chemical.

yes, if you want to keep the rest of your hair, please find a new salon. I was going to a ghetto place (looked like someones dirty kitchen) but I liked the stylist at first so I let it slide. Well after she burnt my head by leaving my relaxer on for what felt like all day and night, then cut my hair without asking, I drew the line. I wont be going back to her and have lines up a better salon for my next touch up.

I think that you're right. I even offered to buy the color before and she insisted that she would have it.

I think that my fear comes from having someone else apply my relaxer; it only takes one mess up to have totally burned hair, which is why I had to cut off about 30 inches of hair in the first place.

Well, it's unanimous...time to move on. There is definitely no shortage of domincan salons in NYC, so I'll be trying a new one.

Supergirl, my mother loves Shamboosi; I should have asked her to check his book regarding pregnancy/nursing. However, I'm glad that you clarified that for me.

Thanks for the responses ladies.

Gabrielle, believe it or not, I was upset about the loss of length, as I'm trying to grow my hair out, but it will grow, none the less. It was the lie, constant lying that made me feel as if she didn't think that I'd notice.

I'm just so afraid to have someone new apply my relaxer, but I'm going to have to step out and venture.

Playing devil's advocate, I say stick w/ your stylist that you've been w/ for so long. Just draw the line at certain things--bring your own products, don't let her cut/trim your hair, etc. Just watch her a little closer. In terms of the color, she was probably thinking, "ahh, it's the same thing". A good "stylist"(= someone you've been comfortable w/) is hard to come by. It's when you start looking around for someone new or experimenting w/ different stylists that things go wrong. So if you are going to leave her, be careful w/ all the new stylists you may experience. Now I'm going to run and duck the flames. Good luck.

She sounds like someone you would have to stay on your toes with. You can't trust her. When it comes to my hair...if I can't trust you...to me your trifling...willing to cut a corner in a heartbeat. Oooops! I let my past bad stylist memory overwhelm me. Any how, if you chose to stay with her for relaxing purposes you'll have to make it known to her that your on top of things (your watching her).

I'm fairly new to the board, but I,m about 80% let her go and 20% stay. Lea5 has a good point though, about the comfort level you've developed and then drawing the line on certain things. It really is hard to find someone you trust. I was recently let down by my hairdresser that I had been going to for over 20 years. She had plans to move away and I only found out by accident. Specifically , the Friday before the following Monday that the moving trucks were scheduled to leave! I'm like, OK, I'm just A ** out? You weren't gonna say anything?? Anyway, not to hijack...it is hard but not impossible to find someone new. My thing is, we go to the hairdresser, nail salon, whatever...TO BE PAMPERED. Not that we shouldn't casually make note of what's going on, but we should not to have to stay on guard for every little thing that the operator is doing--especially if it stems from distrust. Wishing you the best on this.

I feel what you're saying on this. I'd been going to my last stylist for almost three years. She was the only one I trusted for relaxing, cutting, trimming because I seen my hair really progress with her. When I went back to school my hair was really destroyed and she helped me get back on track and even recommended some of my staple products which were out of her salon. However, I got tired of greasy hairstyles that didn't always turn out they way i wanted and my scalp was getting burned the last few times she applied a relaxer. So even though I was really comfortable with her, I knew it was time to move on.

Webby, two lashes for you... in the "neighborhood" and didn't holla!!!!!!!
Lil' Papa and I would have loved to have seen you and Chase.

Sorry that your hairdresser played you... I remember you telling me how happy you were to have found her again. If you are comfortable with her relaxing you, then ONLY let her do that. I'm NOT thrilled that she cut your hair like that. If all else fails, there's always Nancy!!!
