I suffer from it too. It's good to know I'm not alone.

/images/graemlins/smile.gif I'd like to think that it's b/c I don't see my hair down and straightened very often (once in 8 months!). So my image of my own hair is that I have shoulder length hair b/c when it's curly that's the length it is /images/graemlins/look.gif. In reality it's much closer to armpit than shoulder, but mind hasn't made the connect yet /images/graemlins/ohwell.gif.

Ditto!! I wear my hair in twistouts a lot, so sometimes when I've just washed it and it's wet, I'll catch a glimpse of it in the mirror and think "whoa!! my hair is long!" /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

One day at work I was at the sink and this white woman (another supervisor) approached me and asked me how long I've been growing my hair... I think I must have looked at her like she was nuts, (cuz I was thinking "hell, my hair isn't THAT long!!) but I recovered and answered her... All day I was thinking to myself "I hope they haven't hacked into my computer and been checking up on me through the websites I visit at work during the day!!" /images/graemlins/look.gif /images/graemlins/rofl.gif

I guess I've been going thru this myself lately. Here I am, killing myself to get to goal, and Mona and MrsLee were telling me I was already there but I couldn't see it. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

:cry3: I am also suffering from hair anorexia. I met CH and she told me my hair was long, I'm ashamed to admit it, but I still can't see it. I guess because I want my hair to be all the way down my back. So until my hair hits that threshold, I will still see my hair as still short. Now I don't feel my hair is short short, but I see it as just a little bit passed my shoulders. I am at braclasp on all but 1 of my bras, but yet it still seems as if I'm not at strap yet.

I don't know when I will think differently, maybe when my hair is near my butt I'll think "yeah, now my hair is long".

Here's an example of "Hair Anorexia" -

You can easily see long hair in other people, often even hair that is shorter than your own, but when you look at yourself, you see only short hair.

Can anyone relate to this?

When other people tell you, how "long" your hair is getting ... do you view your hair as long?

I've even seen people with waist length hair refer to their hair as "short" ...but who knows...when I get there, I just may feel the same... :ohwell:
I cannot relate to it. Once I get to waist length......I'm quitting the forum! :Crowned:

LOL, J/K.

Count me in. :cry3:

I first noticed this earlier this year, but I couldn’t quite put a finger on what was going on. Looking at the many signs and symptoms that have been posted in this thread, I now know what to call it. More importantly though, I see that I no longer have to suffer alone.

At one point I could see my progress, and now it’s like “whatever” whenever someone gives me a compliment or comments that they wish they had hair like mine. I've actually found it somewhat tricky to make sure that I respond in a courteous and/or positve manner to the praises of others because I worry sometimes about running the risk of sounding conceited, or that I’m seeking attention, by disagreeing with.

I’ve trained myself to just politely say “thank you” instead of getting into disputes about what I consider long, my personal goals (which is currently to completely cover my BS, not just be able to reach it via stretching and pulling), etc.

Let me know when the support group officially begins, cause I know I need help.

Heck yeah it's real. There is this guy @ my job & he tells me everyday that my hair is sooo long and pretty. I'm like "Huh!" His nick name for me is "pretty hair". He'll be like "Wus up pretty hair!" I still don't see it & I want it longer regardless of what he says.

Wow! I've never had this. I guess, because I always loved short hair cuts (like Halle Berry's cut). My mom always had a short cut, and I always thought that short hair made women look powerful and in control of their own.

Same here! I love my short cut. I wore my hair long for 19 years before cutting it, and I never had hair anorexia. I guess I never really compared my hair to anyone else's.

I LOVE cute, short cuts on other people. I make it a point of complimenting women on their short cuts. I just like the way long hair looks on me. And it still doesn't seem long to me - even though it's long to everyone else. Maybe a few inches from now? Then again, maybe not.

Re: "Hair Anorexia" - Is this thing for real????

I often feel my hair is short as shrinkage hides its true length. Tonight I trimmed my hair up to about an inch all over and I was a little upset cos a lot of hair was on the floor. When my mum came into my room her mouth was wide open then she said "Wha! Look how you hair has grown!" which surprised me a great deal

Re: "Hair Anorexia" - Is this thing for real????

I'm sure I have hair anorexia too. I say this because I'm really afraid to wear my hair down bone straight (like sherrylove and sylver2--their hair looks great, by the way :look: ). I haven't worn my hair down straight since the year 2000. Or is that 1999? When I see another person with beautiful long hair I'm guessing-- "Is my hair that length"? It drives me crazy but don't have the courage to wear mine straight yet to find out. It's like I prefer to be in the dark or something, I don't know.

I'm loosing it, ladies.

BUMPING this thread since I believe most of us get so caught up in the growng of our hair, that we forget that it actually has grown...I suffer from this terribly, since I only realize my hair has gained inches when i looked at my fotki or my coworker reminds me where it was a year ago...I appreciate the compliments, but I think my hair will OFFICIALLY be long once I reached full BSL....anyone else suffering from this?

Yes I am definitely a hair anorexia sufferer. I would have been extremely happy to have hair the length I have now before I found the boards and started growing it out but now... I'm always surprised when other people say it's long. I'm not sure how long it will have to be before I think it is. I'm starting to worry that I'll never be satisfied with the length no matter how long it gets. :ohwell:

Re: "Hair Anorexia" - Is this thing for real????

I suffer from this. I just don't see my hair as being long

A while ago me and dh were watching a tv show, and there was a girl on the show with really pretty hair. I told him ''I can't wait till my hair gets that long'' He looked at me like  and said ''You hair IS that long. It's longer than hers!'' I still didn't see it, but he wouldn't lie to me about my hair

When I compare new hair pictures to older ones, I really don't see a difference. I KNOW my hair's gotten longer, but I just don't see it :perplexed

We need some kind of support group

Re: "Hair Anorexia" - Is this thing for real????

It's definitely real. My hair is almost two feet long yet I still feel as if it isn't quite long. I think shrinkage has to do with my hairnorexia but it is also that my standards get higher and goal lengths get longer as my hair grows and exceeds my previous expectations.

Re: "Hair Anorexia" - Is this thing for real????

My hair a lot longer than it was a year ago but to me it's still not very long at all. I still consider it short so I must have hair anorexia. It only looks long in photos but on me...:nono: The more it grows, the more I want it to grow. I thought that when I reached BSL it would look long or feel long but it doesn't. I'm still happy to have it though. I just need 5 more inches:yep:...and I'll be good.

I definitely suffer from this! I know for certain that if it were not for my fotki pictures I would not believe my hair has grown at all. I would even probably just give up. I definitely look forward to the day when I look at my hair in the mirror and feel like it is long. I think that might come when I am full BSL, but for some reason I think I will always be kind of doubtful.

I think it's real. Although my hair is longer than it was a year ago...I still feel "follicly challenged." /images/graemlins/ohwell.gif

Me too! I feel the same way. I'm APL and I haven't had hair this long for years and it just looks short to me when everyone else is telling me I have long hair. I just don't agree w them. LOL.
