And one other thing about the nasty comments. I leave them up. i got one or two and I didnt delete them. I got a good laugh and I wanted other people (who have sense) to get a good laugh too. I responded with tact of course, but again it aint that serious. I suppose its because I have a thick skin and it takes a lot to get me riled up. This is all my opinion so if yours is different dont get mad.

There have been threads about this in the past. If I'm not mistaken the last one got locked. But people have different reasons.

Also, if your album is open, it can show up in search engines just like any post in the hair section of the board can. Or if somebody posts your link somewhere else online, anybody who sees that link can have access to it. Some people feel better knowing that only people from this site have access to their pw and can view the pics versus all of fotki.com or yahoo, etc. And some people keep fotkis for their personal growth record and only give the link and pw to certain people.

i dont lock my pics, mostly because i dont see any reason to personally i dont have any nudes up or anything like that its boring hair pics. i do lock my personal pics that i dont want viewed by the public, but thats it. i hardly doubt anyone is really looking to steal them or anything. if someone recognizes me from the site i guess it happens, i dont really worry about it. plus its too much of a hassle for the people who really are looking for inspiration IMO.

I agree with this and the quoted from her post.

I want most of my traffic to be LHCFers. Which is why my password is my in profile. Those from fotki or otehr places who really want to see me can ask for it. And have. No biggies.

The main reason people go to my fotki anyway is for my reviews, recipes, journals, whatever else -not so much my hair.

I don't have great pics up now anyway, lol.

But the albums most important I leave open to the public.

I will put up a public fotki album with better quality pictures in the future, but I'll be sure those are pictures I don't mind ANYONE seeing ANYWHERE.
The ones I have now are pitiful webcam shots.

I have pictures of varying sorts up all over. I never worry about bad comments or whatnot. I'm not everybody's cup of tea and that's ok.

As for stalkers I've had a few that were harmless. It's not a huge deal to me.

Just thought I'd chime in and let you know why I lock mine. I received some very disturbing comments using language that I would never repeat and saying sexual things that were frightening. Until that point, I never understood why people locked their albums. Some comments were racially charged, some were just sick, sexual things. I hadn't visited my fotki for a few weeks due to illness in my family and when I finally saw the comments and how long they had been on my albums for all the world to see, I was appalled, angry, and felt sick. Hopefully there weren't any minors looking at the comments. Also, I'm sure you can now see some of the people that visit your albums and some of them have nothing to do with hair. Anyway, my pw is always available for those that ask (provided that I can also see their pics).

If I find a style that I want to re-create and I take a pic of it and put it in my album I ALWAYS post a link to the originator of it and give her props for inspiring me.

You know what's funny? I see a lot of people on FOTKI with their perfunctory "do not steal my pictures" message...nothing is sacred people. There is always a way. They've got software like Snipit and photo capturing programs where you can still select the photos, copy and paste.

I have come across some really cute hairstyles and wanted to put them in my "memory bank." It's not stealing unless you plan to publish someone else's photos without their permission

I've only done it one time so don't label me a thief.

I jut learned that soon enough it won't even be stealing to publish people's photos. There will be no permission needed. Congress is working on a jacked up, lame bill right now that will eliminate private ownership of such things unless they are professionally copywritten & filed. Hopefully the bill won't get passed. It would kill the livelihood of many artists & photographers especially and at that point, I'd probably take my fotki down all together.

But for now, you are so correct. All those so called protected pictures. Can be easily obtained without any program what-so-ever by the simplest tool...which shall remained un-named because I don't want to share that info with anyone who may use it for evil purposes. erplexed


Firefly, I'm so sorry to hear that. Thank you for sharing your story. That sounds horrible. I would have locked it up too. Some perv scared Tracee too and she locked it with the quickness. You gotta do what ya gotta do.

I read on the other thread of pet peeves for fotki's and was wondering, why do people lock their pictures? I read that as the number one pet peeve and understandably so. I have all of my stuff locked up because people say "pirates" steal? I'm like "steal what"? Why do my pics need to be protected? Do people take your pics and put their face to them? Why would someone act like they're growing their hair? Why lie about your hair? I have seen some things that look a little iffy, but hey, if you want to live in a fantasy world of some kind and make others believe it, go ahead if that's what keeps you from going to the mall and blowing innocent people away. But what is the real reason why we lock our pics. My number one pet peeve about owning a fotki is everyone asking for my password. Not that it bothers me so much it's that someone came and had to turn away. So is there any risk or danger to me not having my pics locked up??? I have my password posted in my siggy but no one ever uses it from here....I guess. Soooo, anyone....why do we have to lock them???

I locked mine - because I had alot of wierdos that were coming and looking at my pics ( they had Porn sites...) So - I locked it up.

Hopefully - I have enough security so that the wierd nasty people won't find me.

Exactly why I locked mine down. I also basically took access from another couple of sites I belonged to.

i've locked it once because i got paranoid about the tons of people that would come through but leave no comment so i had no idea who was looking at my pictures. something about someone i did not know looking through my fotki was very disturbing to me back then. i've taken the p/w off because i thought i was being silly but it still disturbs me a little, not to the extent that it used to though. i probably should have blocked out my face from the very moment i got a fotki but i never realised i'd ever feel that way.

I am in the process of setting up my fotki, but it will be locked with the face blurred because I don't won't everyone to know that I am a crazy hair lady. It's just a hobby that I would prefer to keep private for professional reasons.

No I don't mean it like that, I mean folks will actually post it on their website as a style that they've done AND you can PAY for them to do your hair the same way!

...I do the same as you, I always give credit where credit is due, but I don't false advertise and try to profit off of folks knowing good and well I didn't do that style!

Mine is locked because a gentlemen that would traffic my fotki daily.....I want to make sure the traffic in my fotki is about hair...not some man looking at my backside....Plus it makes my husband more comfortable..if it is a big issue for someone to take the time to ask for a password that is not really my problem...

I lock mine because of the people who are worried about what may happen. It's wild enough these days how you can find out EVERYTHING on the internet. It's just my way of making sure that I can control where my pictures are going. I don't mind posting the link and password on hair sites because I don't mind if you come across it on a hair site. That takes a certain type of person. I do also try to keep the personal details to a minimum.

But let me say, that there are DEFINITELY ways to get the protected photos anyways, I don't wanna mention the one I know of either, but that makes me kinda scared to know how easy it could be for some people. I just don't wanna be a part of that.

I didn't really want to lock mine until I saw some random guy in the My Guests... I have my old albums locked because the pictures aren't relevant anymore and my new one is open because my face isn't in any of the pictures.

all the post about creepy guys roaming around in fotki's (and all of the other valid points to lock fotkis) have made me rethink locking (before i only really locked when updating, reorganizing or when i was on hair forum/fotki hiatus)... now i'm going to lock it (but keep pw in siggy... people on hair forums are here for hair... i know this may not be completely true for everyone... but i trust that posting my pw here will do no harm... if i think that it will, then i'll re-evaluate)
