Hello everybody,

My name is Taja and I signed up a while ago so I could learn my hair but I guess I got frustrated and gave up. But this time I'm back and ready to learn because I'm tired of not knowing how to handle my 4B hair and I feel like I'm too old to not know. So, I will listen to any suggestions you ladies have because I am literally am starting from the beginner's level here.

So far I learned that my hair loves to suck up moisture and it has to stay moist so it won't get brittle and break. I've made a mixture that someone suggested to me of coconut oil, peppermint oil, jamaican black castor oil, and water to keep it moist. Since I made my concotion a few days before New Year's and applied it, I haven't needed to do it since, it's still so soft!

Anything else? And I'm glad to be back!

Actually ladies, I do have a question right now. I'm about to purchase a CHI straightener and I'm not sure if I should get titanium or ceramic for my hair type?

Welcome! I only purchase ceramic because titanium irons get really hot even at the same temps as ceramic because it conducts the heat better and more evenly. Heat damage I have heard is easier with a titanium flat iron because of this so I stay away from those. I use the EAPheat 1" ceramic flat iron and I love it!

You know what, I figured it out. I went digging and found that since my hair is so coarse, it’s best I use titanium. Which makes sense actually, because we randomly have about 3 or 4 Gold N Hot ceramic straighteners in the house, and anytime I’d try to follow a pressing tutorial, it would never come out right, now I get why. My hair needs titanium, not ceramic. I ordered a titanium CHI last night, so we’ll see....

Here’s some archived stuff that introduces beginners to products and regimen building. Some links aren’t available anymore so just scroll through and skim some things to get started.

A regimen doesn’t have to be complicated. So just make a good shampoo, condition, and deep condition schedule, one that you can stick to either bi-weekly, or monthly, and brush up on a few protective styles to get the ball rolling.

Have a few staple products that you like to use and helps your hair thrive.

Maintain a good and balanced diet, exercise regularly and drink water daily. The rest is just learning maintenance and what works best for length retention, and a healthy dose of patience.
