Weight Loss & Hair Growth, Whose on this Journey?

I am in this one also. My step daughter and I are being each other's accountability partner starting this week. I am showing her some healthy hair steps to take and she is helping with dinner plans and menu.

My skin and nails have improved and my hair is doing well so now I need to focus on the weight. My weight is health related to some surgeries I have had in the last 5 years so I am really struggling but I am not giving up!!!
 
I am! I just re-started actually. I was on one for 1.5 years and then took a hiatus for 7 months. I am going to lose (yes I'm confident! lol) 65 lbs by June and I am hoping to gain 6 inches of healthy hair.

When I started this journey in 2007 I was 339 lbs (yep I posted that) and my hair was barely ear length. Now It's 2009 and I've gotten myself down to 232 lbs (yep, I'm not ashamed) and I'm collar bone length when stretched I think.

I feel like I'm at the mid point in a slow but steady race. I'm ready to finish this up by next June.

I am a little past apl and around 215lbs 5'6 1/2 i gained since i quit smoking (I YEAR smoke free)
I am determined to loose about 30lbs short term 50lbs long term
I am more aware of what i put in my body and learning the difference between hunger and dehydration, sometimes we ting we are hungry and our body is dehydrated I have to get back on ball with my workout plan it is raining nonstop in ny i need motivation for working out indoors with the kids

Studying the connection between short sleep duration and obesity, researchers analyzed national data from 29,818 adults aged 18 to 85. The study found that 52 percent of blacks and 38 percent of whites were obese (body-mass index of 30 or higher). Rates of short sleep duration (five hours or less per night) were 12 percent for blacks and 8 percent for whites.

The adjusted obesity/short sleep duration odds ratio was 1.78 for blacks and 1.43 for whites, which shows that blacks have a 35 percent greater risk of obesity associated with short sleep duration, the researchers said.

"Compared to white Americans, black Americans had a greater prevalence of short sleep and a greater prevalence of obesity. Both black and white Americans who were obese tended to have short sleep duration," study author Girardin Jean-Louis, an associate professor at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center at the Brooklyn Health Disparities Research Center, said in a news release.

The findings suggest that short sleep time may be a contributor to the obesity crisis in the United States, Jean-Louis said. Previous research has found that people who sleep for less than seven hours a night are at increased risk for obesity.

The study was to be presented Monday at the Associated Professional Sleep Societies annual meeting, in Chicago.

:grin: Hello Ladies! Thanks again for all of your replies and I encourage you all on your weight loss and hair journey. As of Friday, i started a 6am morning workout and a evening workout with my bf. Today is the fourth day, and i must say i feel a lot better!!! I usually do the following:

Treadmill, for 30 mins. Elliptical, 15 mins, and 4 sets of 25 crunches in the AM.

My evening workout is usually a bit more intense. I will be taking a two day break on Tues and Wed to give myself time.

As far as hair, i had my little sister braid my hair up into a ponytail with loose curly ends. Saturday, my pony was afro-ish ( i have some neat pics to upload of my hair), but the style worked well with my added workout activities. Today, i am sporting a banded ponytail to the back of my head --- i had very minimal time after this morning's workout. I am soooo motivated because of everyone! Let me know if you need any extra motivation! Happy growing and happy losing!! :rolleyes:

It's simple. No fancy machines required; just record what you eat on paper or using an online record. "The trick is to write down everything you eat or drink that has calories," says Victor Stevens, a researcher at Kaiser Permanente's Center for Health Research and coauthor of the study released today, which appears in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. That's easy enough with labeled foods but gets harder when you're dining out or are eating an unfamiliar food. Try online calorie databases like CalorieKing.com, and watch the serving sizes—here's a good source of info on estimating what, say, an ounce of bread looks like. You'll probably still underestimate your daily intake, says Thomas Wadden, director of the Center for Weight Loss and Eating Disorders at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, but you'll very likely come closer than someone who isn't keeping a food record.

It's eye opening. In fact, some people will be so shocked at how many calories are in their thrice-daily Coke that the "aha" moment will make going on an actual diet unnecessary. Being forced to be aware of what you're eating can often be enough to help people drop weight, says Wadden.

It helps you track your progress. Use the diary as a way to make adjustments throughout the day and to gauge how much exercise you need to hit a certain calorie count, advises Holly Wyatt, a physician and researcher at the Center for Human Nutrition at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. "If I eat three cups of fries, I know that I ate a lot and can cut back at the next meal," says Francis Tacotaco, a 38-year-old skilled nursing assistant from Richmond, Calif., who used a food diary as part of a weight-loss program at Kaiser. He's lost 21 pounds so far and wants to drop more.

You're accountable to someone. Supervised weight-loss programs often require participants to turn in their food diaries to nutritionists or doctors, which may make you think twice before giving in to temptation. "I've seen it all," says Stevens. "One gallon of vanilla ice cream, three pizzas, and a gallon of milk. My experience is that the people who have the courage to write it down tend to do pretty well," even if what they're writing down amounts to a lot of food, he says. If you're not part of a program, you can team up with a friend and swap food diaries once a week to keep each other in line. And many people find it's enough to be accountable to themselves. "You won't put that second cookie in your mouth because you don't want to see it in your food record," says Stevens.

After the extra poundage is gone, many people continue to use a diary to keep themselves honest. About 50 percent of participants in the National Weight Control Registry (which tracks the habits and practices of weight-loss maintainers) report they use some kind of self-monitoring, such as a food diary, says Wyatt. Some people may keep a diary on the weekend only, when they tend to eat more; others just record dinner, which usually varies more than breakfast and lunch, says Wadden. It's a habit you can benefit from for a lifetime.

:lachen:Well, thank you! It isn't going to be easy...but i am going to try it out for a while. I work an 8-5 job, and i have a very challenging programming class that i am taking this summer. I have to be very cautious that i get enough sleep as well, and i actually think that the workout is helping me stay stress free! I would recommend that you try to find something that works for you and your schedule! I know you can do it :)
 
Yeah i just seriously started this journey. I want to lose 10-15 lbs and gain an inch of growth by Aug.

I dont know what it is about weight loss, I have been trying to lose these last few lbs for over a year now. It seems like as soon as I get 5-7 off I sabotage myself!! I got issues! Hopefully this time things will stick.
 
I am also on this journey of weight loss and hair growth but I am more into hair health and thickness than length at the moment. I have a target of 12 lbs to drop by August 31st, 2009 and an additional 10 lbs by December 10th, 2009. My ultimate weight goal is to come down from my current weight of 145 lbs to 123 lbs on this tiny 5'4" frame. My bones are fine to medium, so carrying around this extra 23 lbs is extremely uncomfortable for me:nono:.

I do like weight-lifting but I'm trying to really increase my cardio to shed some of the weight. Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred DVD is awesome and I will be using that a lot to help me along. In addition, exercising helps my hair to grow faster too so that's a nice incentive for me to keep on exercising:yep:.

I am proud to say i am 11 lbs lighter today since starting Weight Watcher's Momentum program about a month ago! I am also 1 year without relaxer! I am really trying to dumb down my hair regimen more, and also my weight loss regimen. Some times, we tend to over emphasize what we are doing, and all we end up doing is burning out and quitting. Are there any ladies on this journey as well, and succeeding in doing so? I plan on losing at least 30 more lbs by my next bday, and becoming BSL by the end of this year. All motivation helps!

This is SO true!

I have lost 30lbs from January to March doing slow and steady and then got so excited by results that I started wanting to speed it up doing strange crash diets. The result was a kind of strict/binge habit that was not healthy. I have now gone back to slow and steady eating correctly and working out.

I am getting ready to start a personal C&G challenge so for two years and I am hoping my APL hair will be a thick MBL by then.
 
I'm on the journey, I just lost 20lbs since the beginning of May. I'm now 239 and I'm trying to get down to 135-145. I'm eating healthy, but I need to stick to my workout routine. I have a year before I turn 30 and I want to look fabulous before then.

I would have never posted that before, I'm feeling kind of liberated today. LOL!

Oh, the hair is looking good also.

I'm really trying. The problem is that my weight just keeps going back and forth:wallbash: My goal is to lose 20 lbs and gain enough hair to be at MBL - TBL. I'm currently taking Xenadrine (with caution) for weight loss - recently started AND I'm taking various vitamins and supplements for hair growth and overall health. I plan on reaching both of those goals by this Sept or no later than the end of this year (the sooner the better)!
 
I'm trying to lose another 10lbs, maybe 15 and tone up by August. I attend a bootcamp class Mon-Fri, sometimes twice a day and usually wear my hair up in a ponytail or bun. I will be putting it away for the remainder of the summer though. I hope to see good results.
 
Is this a challenge? If not it should be. I just started working out kinda sporadically though. I overtrained last week (Zumba classes can be hell) but I'm back on track. I lost 10 pounds so far with more to go. I've grew 3 in hair wise so that's also a plus. Now I just need to up my protein.
 
I had been blaming my weight gain on baby fat, but I guess I need to get real and confess that my oldest baby is almost 22! I actually started gaining weight 3 years ago after I bought a car. I used to walk everywhere, but I needed to move and wasn't sure about transportation so I gave in. As a result, I've put on just over 50 lbs and I'm only 4'11". So this year was all about getting in shape- the total package hair, skin, weight and attitude. I bought a bike the other day and I did all of my errands today on two wheels. Tomorrow my daughter and I are riding to the pool, 2.5 miles each way. I've got my hair in braids and I feel like with the help of LHCF I'm all set with that. So now it's all about the body.

I'll continue to use all that I've learned about healthy hair practices while I'm sporting this protective style. Now it's time to work on some general health practices. I'm hoping for lots of success in both areas.
 
Count me in!! It seems that I may have the most weight to lose out of this whole thread (over 100 pounds) but yet I'm still so encouraged! :grin:

I lost 13 pounds back in May doing low carb and walking, but I got lazy and quit and gained back about 6 pounds :nono: So I just started a program called "First Impression Weight Loss" last Tuesday and I've already lost 4 pounds! The diet is pretty strict meat, veggies and the ocassional fruit and a gallon, yes I said a gallon of water a day! They also administer appetite suppressants, supplements and B-12 injections to help you along.

As far as my hair, I've been growing it from between sl and apl since Nov 07. I'm currently BSL. My goal is beyond wsl.

I just love this thread and I'm so excited!
 
Im in this...My hair regime has finally been found. :up: I just wasn't paying attention. I think hiding my hair till dec will give me atleast 4 inches I need for cute twist outs.
As far as weight loss :nono: I keep gaining and losing that same 5lbs. I cleaned out the kitchen pantry of all junk. Now that's a start :yep:

I'm striving for APL. My hair has grown several inches - from CL to SL. Unfortunately, I gained weight sitting, studying, and eating for a year in law school.

I just started my workout regimen & calorie counting last week & I have already lost two pounds!
 
Well ladies I had my first official weigh in since my initial visit to First Impression Weight Loss a week ago and...are you ready for this..... I lost a whopping 9.2 pounds in one week!! :grin:

I'm so happy and even more motivated! I also relaxed my hair Saturday and discovered I'm now full BSL.....Yay! Go me! Go me!:yay:...

Congrats ladies!! I'm trying to get it together. I have my hair together and have went natural and im happy with it. Now i need to get my weight together...So I'm definetly on the journey!! :)
 
I worked out with my trainer this morning yay me!

But umm, my hair needs to be washed and twisted. Right now it's just in a bun. Maybe I'll do it tonight.

My weigh -in today was -1.4lbs. I also lost 3.8 last week, so i am feeling nice :grin:

I can see a HUGE difference in my size, so i know i have dropped a dress size.

My new workout vids came earlier this week and I can not wait to try them out. This weekend, I(okay my dh will:grin:) plan on making a color coded spreadsheet for my workouts and hanging it on the wall.

This is my first post but have been on this board daily for almost a year, I check it at work on my bb and have all my girlfriends hooked:) My hair is longer and in the best shape it has ever been in my life, almost apl and I have lost 15 pounds since March. With the tips I am learning here I am working on being the best me I can be!!!

BTW- To all the lurkers out there, you don’t know what your missing till you join.
