What do other races (white, asian, spanish ect) do to their hair to keep it healthy?

Is all they have to do is wash it everyday so the oil wont buildup?

They dont have to moisturize their ends or their entire hair, do deepconditiong treatments?.....They can just use a cheap Suave shampoo and conditoner and be good to go?

I have a caucasian friend, her hair is healthy and thick as it wants to be, and she blowdrys and roundbrushes her hair everyday.....whats up with this kind of stuff?

Do other races hair really take care of themselves basically?

Re: What do other races (white, asian, spanish ect) do to their hair to keep it healt

I used to think that they did not have to do much to have beautiful hair, however now I am seeing that that is not the case. They still need to trim, deep condition, and such, however, maybe not as frequent as we do because of relaxers and or color.

However you can tell when their hair needs to treated and such. My co-worker who is Asian washes her hair everyday and blowdries. However, since she does this she has to trim about 2 inches off everytime she goes to salon (maybe every 4-6 weeks). And her hair does tend to look a bit off sometimes because of the constant shampooing and heat.

But definately they do need more than just wash-n-gos.

Re: What do other races (white, asian, spanish ect) do to their hair to keep it healt

The most important thing to remember is that everyone's hair is different.

They haven't been supersubjected to the pressure to conform to a beauty standard that many of us have. I dont think our hair is hard to manage, but we're in a world that neglects (for the most part) finding ways to teach and show us how to maintain what we have as well as it's versatility. What other group do you know can have a fro, a blowout, a flat press, braids, dreads, waves, curls and more?

They've been learning how to care of their hair and invested more time learning to style it naturally and easily for years... we're just now starting to accept and demand acceptance of out hair.

My hair is actually easier to deal with now that I'm transitioning than it is being manipulated by all these perms, texturizers and junk we've been posioning ourselves with.

Manageability comes withh great health, confidence and patience~ You'll be there! You are already on the right path being here!

Well if they are going for long hair, and are on hair boards, they're doing many of the same things WE are doing. Including CO washes, oiling ends, no brushing, no heat, wearing hair up, etc, etc, etc.

Re: What do other races (white, asian, spanish ect) do to their hair to keep it healt

Well, for the most part, they don't do the relaxers and microbraids which often break our hair (if not taken care of extremely well).

ITA- As a natural I could just wash it then let it dry and bun it or wear it out, but sometimes I feel as though my texture isn't the "prettiest" or what's "in" so I may go through many changes to get it to be a certain way instead of just washing it and calling it a day. I know its something I have to deal with on my own, but i'm sure many others (even some non-blacks) may feel this way about their own hair.

To each his or her own.
I myself have a certain look I'd like... not totally natural (it's too much for ME to handle)... but definitely not straight. A looser curl with more definition is my desire, but I definitely will not adhere to using any permanent fix.

There are a bunch of girls in other races who do things to their hair. Two of my best friends are Dominican (one's Dominican and Italian) and they are always fussing about their hair!

Re: What do other races (white, asian, spanish ect) do to their hair to keep it healt

I asked becasue even if we dont have perms/relaxers/chemicals or use heat, our hair still needs/lacks things that come natural to other races....like:

--the cutilces of our hair are slightly open because of the curls & turns which leads to moisture not being able to stay in & a slight rougher feeling, and no shine
--Theres a lower moisture content becasue water cant travel as easily though the curls
--Lower sebum/oil on the hair because of the curls wich can make a duller appearence and cant help seal in moisture
--less sulfur which leads to a less silky feeling

So its like they really dont have to do anything. Meanwhile if our hair is natural and heat free, we still need to do moisturizers and more deepcodntioners, acv rinser or porosity or low ph products, use or take oils ect.

I do love our hair (and mine) though and wouldnt change it for the world
I was just curious about what they have to do since it seems their hair does everything for them

Maybe it's just me, but I see non-black women with unhealthy looking hair. I am not sure what others have to do, but I am glad that I know what I can do to rock a fresh wash-n-go and a tight roller set...thanks LHCF ladies!:lachen:

Re: What do other races (white, asian, spanish ect) do to their hair to keep it healt

^ITA

A Native friend of mine has hair down to her knees. It's healthy, shiny, and uber thick. When asked what does she do she just said vitamins (GNC), infrequent trims, and olive oil. :yep: (No color just natural hair)

Re: What do other races (white, asian, spanish ect) do to their hair to keep it healt

My Indian friends do alot of hot oil treatments, henna treatments and scalp massages.

A friend of mine is from Russia and she deep conditions more than I do. Ever time I call her she has some Redken on her head.

Re: What do other races (white, asian, spanish ect) do to their hair to keep it healt

I see on other hair boards people of other genetic origin doing most of the same things we do to gain and retain length. I see conditioner shampooing, deep cons, gentle handling, bunning, braiding. I also see bandwagon jumping:ohwell:, product experimentation, back of head photos, big chops, pjism, stress, joy and despair:wallbash:. Same things, different genetics. Take a 'guest' peek at some of those sites to see what I'm talking about.

Re: What do other races (white, asian, spanish ect) do to their hair to keep it healt

Proper hair care is universal, i.e. transcends race, or, at least it should.
Yes, Afro hair has a variety of textures, but, aside from issues with new growth if one relaxes her hair, hair issues - dryness, frizziness, tangles, damage caused by chemical processes, and all the rest - are experienced by people of all races and ethnicities.

Black haircare practices are largely based on ignorance due to lack of information, self-education and outdated methods, and erroneous beliefs about hair. I think where women of other races and ethnicities are ahead of the curve is that they are taught better haircare practices, such as to apply a heat protectant before using heat appliances. What do most Black folks use? Lubricants containing petrolatum, mineral oil, lanolin, etc. Applied to the hair and then used with a heat appliance, one is essentially cooking the hair. Which is why my mother *never* applied "grease" before pressing my hair. Even if one uses an all-natural hair oil, the same applies: cooking the hair.

The fact that so many of us here on LHCF use products which are also used by the mainstream population proves my point. Biologically, all hair is composed of the same elements.

BTW #1: Most mainstream salons are supported in large part by the chemical services they provide, i.e. perms and color. Thus, there is a *lot* of damaged hair out there, depending on the care it receives post-chemical application.

BTW #2:With all due respect to the Original Poster: Spanish isn't a race; it is an ethnic group. People who are Spanish-speaking represent different races, as we know.

Hey Dlewis!

I know everyone is different, but as a majority, most black people have to take extra measures for moisturized and healthy hair, so i was just wondering what other races/ethnic groups typically need to do for healthy hair, Even though hair is hair, our hair is unique among other races, i just wanted to know how their regimens differ from ours

Thanks! So basically from what you and other posters said everyone takes care of their hair the same regardless of how much upkeep is involved

I know hair is hair though, but there is some key differences in black hair, and the main things i was really just wondering about is what do they have to do less/more of since their hair is slightly different from us

I think black hair has so many myths and crazy practices simply because our hair is the minority. Our hair is very complex, and untill recently, no-one took the time to really search and find problems and answers, and then when you add on chemicals and heat to the madness :nono:
Alot of black hair info is passed down, and i think that ( i know) that people believe what they are doing is right, and they just dont think their hair can grow.

Yeah i know spanish isnt a race, i often use race and ethnicity interchangeably

Re: What do other races (white, asian, spanish ect) do to their hair to keep it healt

I have friends from lots of different races and I can tell you one thing they do to grow their hair long is not get it cut. Most of these women go to a professional for a trim every 6 months or not at all in a year. Unless they have color they do not make frequent trips to the salon meaning every 2-3 months for touch-ups or inbetween for wash/condidtion. This is when most hairdressers try to talk us into trims or rip through our hair with combs or blowdryers causing breakage.

I agree even the skipping of shampooing.
The only real difference is the results, on average they are able to retain longer length faster and it's thicker. On the white hair board the average length is a little longer/thicker. It's just a fact of life and I still love my 4b hair.

I noticed with my Dominican friends tend to use more kitchen recipes, lots of avocado conditioners, rosemary in the shampoo, mixing olive oil conditioner. They tend to keep their hair straight also, something about it breaking less and they do lots of gloss treatments.

I agree with dlewis.

I am a Black woman who doesn't have to take extreme measures for moisturized and healthy hair. (By the way, I have natural hair...no relaxer). Using too much product on my hair can do more harm than good. I don't deep condition and I don't moisturize my hair everyday. My hair really doesn't need it and it's just fine. That's what I have learned from my experimentation with hair regimens...simple is best for my hair (I even had an extremely simple regimen before LHCF and my hair was fine too), while other women feel that they must use a ton of products for healthy hair. No one black woman's hair regimens is the same.

I also see that you are a newbie. Welcome to LHCF! As you read more and more here, you will find out how some black women take extreme measures and some don't. Take care.

Hey!
Thanks for the welcome!!!
( I'm not a real newbie though because i've been on hair boards for about 2 years, i just never payed the $5 to post on LHCF :look:, so i know that each person has different regimens and hair needs:yep:)

But anyway...

I wasnt trying to lump all black or white people (and other races) into one category about what they do to their hair

I dont think black people take extreme measure to take care of their hair, but do you agree that black hair is one of the driest out of all hair types?
So, i was just saying since our hair is different in that since that its one of the most dry types, than maybe our regimen and daily upkeep is different from other races since they dont have that aspect to worry about, and i was just wondering what alot of them normally do
You can say that alot of black people normally deepconditon their hair and moisturize it, so i was wondering what you can say other races "normally do"

Re: What do other races (white, asian, spanish ect) do to their hair to keep it healt

It all depends on the person I don't think hair care is necessarily subjective to race. I have freinds of all sorts of ethnicitys that do all sorts of things to their hair. One of my freinds who is biracial (white and Peurto Rican) is a bigger pj that I am and we even have many of the same products. I flat ironed her curly hair one day and I swear it was harder than flat ironing my hair relaxed or natural. I do agree that inorder to have healthy hair we have to take better care of our hair than any other race.

Re: What do other races (white, asian, spanish ect) do to their hair to keep it healt

Okay thanks yall

Im def. going to check out some of those other sites, and what im going do to is do polls over there that we already have....like how often do you wash, how often do you deepcondition, how do you dry your hair (airdry, blowdry ect.) and just see what the majorty of people who dont have hair as dry as ours do to their hair compared to us.

Re: What do other races (white, asian, spanish ect) do to their hair to keep it healt

They dont have to moisturize their ends or their entire hair, do deepconditiong treatments?.....They can just use a cheap Suave shampoo and conditoner and be good to go?

quote]

honestly i think anyone can do this, i dont really do anything to my hair and my hair has grown faster and longer in the past 3 years than in my entire life.

I agree with this. I've grown up surrounded by white people and all my roommates at college were white and most of the girls I know don't really do anything out of the ordinary to keep their hair healthy, they just wash and condition every couple of days. As this poster mentioned, they don't frequent salons much, maybe once or twice a year to get a haircut or colour/highlights. However, I do notice a lot of white girls with dry-looking hair, because of blowdrying and flatironing often. One of my roommates started leaving her conditioner in for the duration of her shower instead of rinsing out right away and it made a BIG difference in the condition of her hair. Also, I convinced all my roommates to start using a heat protectant before flatironing :yep:

Re: What do other races (white, asian, spanish ect) do to their hair to keep it healt

I see so many non-black women with unhealthy fried hair it is ridiculous. Not sure why no one else sees this. I do not think they have it "easier" simply b/c their hair is not as kinky as ours. For those with healthy hair the ones I know and see tend not to do much to it. I work with non-black women who have thin hair b/c that is just how they were born. My natural hair is easy to me when I wet it and go. Not sure how much easier it can be. Not sure they are all using those cheap hair products like Suave. I hate that stuff and not sure it is really good in the long run for healthy hair.

The Indian women I see with long hair typically have it bunned up most of the time.

Re: What do other races (white, asian, spanish ect) do to their hair to keep it healt

I think it has alot to do with hair texture. Straight hair is easier to grow out and manage compared to more curly/kinkier hair textures more common in african americans.

I also feel contrary to popular belief that "our" hair is more fragile than it appears. I work in a salon. I see many non-black women with perms/color/highlights or japanese straightening/color/highlights in their hair and alot of them still have a pretty dense head of hair. There is some breakage but for the most part other than the ends its healthier looking.

On the otherhand if I was to do to my hair what some of those women do to theres I would have none. This is evident in the black women that have overprocessed relaxer or over processed relaxers and color. The hair is almost always thin, uneven, and has severe breakage. Even with relaxer alone I see alot of black women with really short broken hair in the back (relaxer probably no rinsed out b/cof position in shampoo bowl) and then thinkking hairline from relaxer being on too long.

They don't have to put as much effort into growing their hair out like we seem to have. As far as keeping it healthy some have routines but more often than not (at least in my experience) some dont especially if they don't have chemicals in their hair.

Re: What do other races (white, asian, spanish ect) do to their hair to keep it healt

As others have mentioned, take a look at some of the other long hair care sites. I think the challenge comes when women use relaxers, color & high heat.

In my workplace, there are women of a variety of ethnicities & we talk about haircare periodically. They have the same concerns, keeping the frizz at bay on rainy & humid days, a white woman who struggles with slow growth (she used to have very long hair but cut it because so many people told her she was too old to have hair that long. Since she has seen mine & the versatility that I have w/my length, she is determined to grow it back. Unfortunately, she was butchered at the hairdresser, too. She went for a trim & came out w/uneven layers:nono:) Yes, we all have different textures. They straighten their hair regularly, either with just the blow dryer or with both blow dryer & flat iron. One of them thought that I straightened mine too. I said no, I just slick it back into a bun or a braid. One of them even said that I was brave for wearing my hair in a wash n go, & said that her sister usually wears her hair that way. Ironically, they became braver as the months went by a began to wear their hair unstraightened & out on occassion.:yep:

Re: What do other races (white, asian, spanish ect) do to their hair to keep it healt

My Dominicas do it a lot. It's like a clear temporary color treatment, but it doesn't have ammonia or any of that other bad stuff. It may last anywhere from one month to 2 months. They often comes in diff colors, but I prefer clear which leaves a shiny finish.

- Sebastian Colourshines is one (discontinued)
- Clairol Jazzing (in clear)
- Colorshowers (read about it here and here) Buy them here
