The Official 2007 Weave/Extension Challenge

Boy do I have a bunch of new growth. I can't stop touching it. hehe

I've been sticking to my regimen and wanted to share with everyone.

Wash & Deep Condition -once a week
1. Section hair into about 6/7 ponytails
2. 1st wash the length in sections with KeraCare Moisturizing Poo (let the water detangle the hair). Then i carefully cleanse the scalp/root of the hair
3. Deep condition for 15-20 minutes with GPB or Nexxus Humectress
4. After rinsing, I use the liquid Alter-Ego on my damp scalp & message well
5. Use Salerm 21 on my hair left out as a leave in (not on the weave)
6. I then simply comb hair down with a thin tooth comb and let air dry

Daily Care
at night
1. apply Jane Carter's Revitalizing Leave-in Conditioner on the cornrolls
2. apply a moisturizer to seal in (cornrolls only. Not weave)

in the morning
1. apply a little bit of mousse to the bottom of hair and roll the hair with conair's hot rollers (I use about 16 rollers)
2. Leave in for about 30min plus. remove and style………

Because of all my new growth, I will be removing these cornrolls pretty soon. Here is a picture of the results

i'm getting my hair redone this weekend for the first time in ages. i'm going to aphogee, i think its been about 4 months or more since i've done one. i just bought jason biotin and shampoo and conditioner to try on my own hair. i hope its good stuff.

I'll officially join!

I've been weaving it up since Janurary--but wasn't sure if i could stick with it--so i didn't join---but now i know i WILL be doing this thru December.

Jan-April i had micros, sewins, and cornrolls--from April-Dec i'll be in sewins or cornrolls, trying to reach APL this year!!

I'm taking out my braids tomarrow. This will make 7 weeks. I plan on doing an Aphogee treatment and wear a bun for a few days. I can't wait a few weeks, I want to get my hair braided immediately after.

Count me in. I am doing APL in '08 and was wondering about how to keep up my growth in this weave. I am a newbie so I have just made my shopping list; Viviscal, conditioners, etc. to get the ball rolling. Was wondering if anyone out there has a full-head with a net?! Help!!!
...If you know about the nets, you know they give a challenge to applying products to your own hair. Please hook a sista up!

I've seen them done before. I tried it with my hair after I bced and I didn't like it. I couldn't even scratch my head good. I prefer just the cornrows.

I'm in this challenge and I've decided to wear my braids in for about 4 years and this is the reason why. My son will be getting braces next year so I figure if he can wear braces for about 3 years then I can wear braids for that long. I'll take them out when the braces are removed. Now. my regime will be to wash as needed, generously spray Scurl on about 3/4 times a week and massage Groganics DHT blocker on my edges. I'll redo the braids when they get messy. Now if for any reason I get bored, I'll remove them but not before 2 years are up, say about 2009. If I stick to the schedule, then I'll remove them in 2011. I'll just pretend they are dreads so that I won't get tempted to give myself a touchup, so everyone please wish me luck..:)

One more thing, this synthetic hair is scratching the hell out of me and I was wondering if I were to use human hair, will the box braids loose out more quickly and will it tangle more easily???

I'm fed up with my hair at the moment, so I've decided to put it away! It's in cornrows at the moment, and I'll be taking it out next week and putting another cornrow style in.

I'm in. I hope its not too late. I got my first ever weave done this weekend and I plan on keeping it this way for a while. I'm growing out a very short cut and will stop wearing a weave when my hair is back to bsl.

It's weaves all the way for me!!! I started with twists & quick weaves (3/4th wigs), now I'm finally on board with the weaves :D! I decided to learn how to do my own weave because I don't have $200 for something that is temporary, and I finally just jumped in and did it this weekend and I couldn't be happier! I can definitely see myself doing this more often.

Ladies, I took out my twists this past weekend and I must say I didn't realize how much hair I really had! And not just any hair, healthy hair! I've come from being fed up with my natural texture to just absolutely loving it! My hair has been growing so healthy and so full. Although I had a stylist use direct heat to my hair this Feb which I regret, I must really say that hiding your hair to grow it healthy is no joke. You will really reap the benefits if you're consistent.

BTW, this weekend I washed/conditioned w/Kendra, Nioxin (for my scalp), and Nexus, and then deep conditioned with IC Fantasia Protein treatment (the little $1 packet), and my fave, LeKair Deep Conditioner.

I dont know how i missed this challenge!!! I hope it's not too late, I want in!!:weird: I've had my sew-in for about 4 weeks and I plan to have it re-done every 4 to 6 weeks. My regimen so far is:
*Pre-poo in between tracks with Vatika or amla oil overnight
*Wash and deep condition twice a week (Weds & Sat)
*Moisturize once or twice a day w/ORS olive oil lotion
*Baggy my entire head 6 nights a week
*Try to stretch my relaxers for six months, or until I see breakage
*Six week weave hiatus after relaxers
*No trims or direct heat
*Heavy duty hair vits & 2 liters of H2O daily

I'm so excited:yay: please sign me up bmoreflyygirl!

....Oh yea, what are the rules?:look:

I just took my weave out after 5 weeks.....the shedding was:eek: alarming! bmoreflyygirl, or anyone who has experience with what to do when you take tracks out to minimize shedding and breakage, PLEASE HELP! I did a pre-poo w/vatika oil, a clarifying poo, aphogee treatment, and a deep cond w/ PM supercharged & porosity control. Tangles were still off the chiz-ain! What am I doing wrong:confused: I lost a small handful of hair:cry: somebody call 911!

It probably was the normal amount of shedding. All your shed hair built up in those braids over the course of 5 weeks. How big was the hairball?

I wish I could take a pic of it but I'm not that savvy yet on the boards:cool: but lets say it fit right in the palm of my hand, then I kept losing hair as I tried to keep detangling...my newgrowth is gangsta!:perplexed . bmore, what is your regimen when you remove your weave and how long do you wait to take it out and re-do? Maybe I waited to long to remove it, I'm thinking three weeks will be my max from now on:confused: What do you think? Whatever you're doing is perfect! I love your hair! You've got it figured out!:notworthy

Thanks... I usually go 5 or 6 (and that's only because I want a new style. It still looks good by then). Sometimes up to 8. I think the longest I've ever gone is 10 or 11. I've taken weave down one day and put it right back in the next (after a wash and DC) with no problems.

Honestly, it doesn't sound like you lost that much hair. Technicially we're supposed to shed 60-100 hairs a day. All of your shed hair was trapped in those braids until you took it down. There's going to be a ball of hair when you take it down regardless. That's normal. Same thing as if you had braids. I have a picture of a ball of hair in my fotki from taking a weave down after 3 months and it certainly was bigger than the ball of hair you're talking about. It was normal shedding.

What are you using to detangle? What type of comb? Are you detangling dry hair? Are you sure it's shedding and not breakage? They are two different things. You could be causing breakage by the way you're detangling. The only other thing I could think of that would make your hair come out is if they braided it too tight. But you would have known that the day they put the weave in.

I didn't detangle after the weave came out, I just went straight to the pre-poo & poo. I detangled in the shower under running water after the porosity control, then when I got out I put fermodyl 619 and NTM. I used a wide tooth come & the denman brush a little bit but when I couldn't get through the new growth, I sprayed the Mane n Tail detangler which helped a lot. My weave was too tight when she put it in though:ohwell: dang I gotta watch that! will you please pm me your password so I can view your regimen and photos?

Andreainnis I believe Bmoreflygrl is right.. I'm in braids too and also lose a lot of hair during combout. It looks like a lot but when you consider that you haven't combed in 5 weeks, it makes sense.

Exactly. I can understand you being concerned because it's clod of hair but what you're seeing is normal.

I think you're using too many products on your hair. Do you really need all that stuff? One of those products could be in fact making your hair hard which would make it hard to comb (especially the new growth) which could be causing breakage. Too much protein can make your hair brittle or hard. Or it could be one of the products. Some products cause shedding and breakage for some people which is a sign that your hair just may not like that particular product. I think you're doing too much. Sometimes less is more. At this point I don't think it's the weave that's the problem.

Also too tight is relative. Braids are going to be tight when they're put in but they will loosen up over time. But I mean too tight as in it's extremely uncomfortable and you can feel your hair pulling or have those little white bumps around the edges. If you really feel like you lost too much hair with the weave to the point where it's making you uncomfortable, then maybe weaves are not for you. You have to remember that everything is not going to work for everybody.

ETA: Is your hair relaxed? And if your hair is long and/or thick, it's going to look like you're losing more hair because the strands are longer. A few long strands is going to look like more hair than a few short strands in a hair ball. My hair is short and my hair ball was bigger than yours. And my hair is thin/fine and it certainly isn't coming out.

bmore, I really appreciate you taking the time to work through this with me! From what you said, I'm thinking I didnt lose so much but now, I know somethings I'm definitely doing wrong. I'm definitely gonna stick with the weave but just change a few things...starting with less products:ohwell: Thanks again!

The 2006 Challenge was a success for many of the ladies on this board. We had a good year this year. Anybody wanna do it again next year?

I got good growth with the sew in weaves but since I bced I'm starting over. I'm already on the Boot Camp Challenge for 2007 and plan to wear sew ins and braids again. If you wanna join the challenge, post your regimen here. Braids are included this time.

I haven't totally devised my regimen yet. I'm taking Rexall Super Potency Biotin from Walmart. 2 pills a day. I usually just wash my weave once a week. Depending on the type of hair I might cowash every 2-3 days. I Spray BRX braid spray on the cornrows to keep them moist. Right now I'm in a full head straight weave. It's about 3 weeks old. I'm getting my hair straightened and cut into a style (I need a trim) on Jan 8th. After that it'll be covered back up.

Alright ladies, Let's Get It!
