If you HAD to choose, or just using your imagination/past experience.....

What do you think would be more effective for retaining length AND healthier hair at the same time
Washing Daily or
Washing Every 2 weeks/less frequently

BASICALLY......

What would YOU personally choose if you had no other choice as the best method out of the two for healthier hair, and retaining length.

Washing (manipulating) daily, but clean hair & scalp

OR

Washing (manipulating) every 2 weeks, but more diry hair & scalp.

Which is more imporant? Which would be best for hair health & retaining length?

On one hand---Manipulation is supposed to avoided, because some think it is key to retaing length
ON the other--Clean hair & scalp is a main factor of haircare, because it promotes/results in healthy scalp

So which method would be most effective at BOTH if given no other option

I dont know (why i posted :drunk:), and am curious to see what people think will give them personally better retention and healthier hair....

I've tried both

Washing/bothering daily gave me more breakage and weaker hair, but my hair looks much better--less scragly ends and splits

Washing/bothering infrequently, my hair is stronger, retains alot more with less breakage, but my ends get scraggly and dry quicker

So can either have healthy looking/feeling hair that breaks easier

Or stronger hair that needs to be trimmed more and moisturized more.

A healthy scalp will give healthy hair. And to keep a scalp healthy, it needs to be washed often, not every 2 weeks. There is no other body part you'd wait that long to clean... I mean, even your ears get cleaned more often than every 2 weeks. :nono:

2 or 3 times a week might be a happy medium with a good daily leave-in mosturizer.

I wash my hair every sunday so thats once a week...with all the oiling and product use leaving it for two weeks wouldnt do me and the hair any good as I would just be puting product on top of product that wouldnt be sinking into the hair...so once a week works for me.

For me, it's wash daily. If my hair were thicker and could hold moisture well, I would try to wash less frequently.

My vote is every 2 weeks. (Actually for me it's 10-14days) As for my scalp, I use witchhaxel and a QTip to cleanse any Itchy Or bothersome patches between washings. My logic is: "We do it when our hair is braided so why not use the technique when our hair is loose?"

Its not that im asking specifically about if washing every 2 weeks is good LOL, i was saying given an ultimatum like if your someone that washes 1x a week, or someone that washes 2x a week (the averages), which EXTREME, washing alot (daily), or not washing that much at all (every 2 weeks) will give the best results. :yep: I was trying to think of a way to ask that wouldnt be confusing---probally should have said washing alot, or infrequently--(but then people would have different ideas of what alot is and infrequently :drunk::spinning:)

Thanks for the advise

I actually wash 1x a week though...works pretty good :yep:

But i've noticed there is kind of a split in the board between leaving the hair alone/low manipuation, and bothering it, and between washing daily to 3x a week,...to washing 1x a week (and some people do wash 1x every 2 weeks i've seen from a poll)

So I was trying to see if given no other choice, if people would choose the extrme of washing daily (which involves cleaning hair but manipulation), to the extreme of washing every 2 weeks (which is no manipualation/low, but less clean hair) so i could clearly see how people look at the importance of manipulation and cleaning hair (like which one is more imporant)

I figured if i just asked whats better low mani or high mani then people would have different ideas of what each is and i couldnt really get any conclusive :)rolleyes: LOL) answers.

If I had to choose, I'd say daily because I've seen more success with daily washing versus long stretches of no washing. Just yesterday there was a thread where a lady didn't wash her hair for 3 weeks and had mega shedding.

In addition to shedding issues, my hair gets dry and unmanageable if I go 14 days without washing it. Plus, it certainly won't smell fresh.

I think there's a happy medium of about twice a week but daily is better than once a month, IMO.

I wash my hair once a week. Washing (manipulating) my hair has never been an issue for me. It's my preference and what i am comfortable with.

If I had to choose between the two, I'd go with daily washing. Nothing beats that clean hair/scalp feel/smell :yep:. Plus, I feel like the more I wash...the more my hair behaves. I don't need a bunch of products to make it act right.

This is a good question. I'm sure the poll will be split for the most part. I have washed every 3 days and now I'm washing daily. I think that it varies per individual. A self experiment would be ideal to see what works for you as well as the current condition of your hair.

If I had to choose I'd pick every 2 weeks because daily washing would be too much manipulation especially for my transitioning hair.

If I had to choose between the two I would choose was daily w/ conditioner. I would also skip scrubbing or manipulating the hair, It would be more like daily conditioner rinses.

Its been my experience that since I have DRY hair, frequent washing is more beneficial to keep up the moisture. However, since I do not like the styling options that come with daily washing/rinsing I co-wash once a week.

I wash every two weeks, and I cowash only. I usually give my scalp a good rinsing once a week, but I have to say that my hair and scalp are not really dirty -

I really think that's because of minimal product usage - and because it's winter.

When I workout daily, or when it's summer time, I can't go two weeks, fair enough - I'll have to at LEAST rinse my hair at the minimum - twice a week - just period. :perplexed

*tsk* I really need to find a summer style...

I agree with this. Everyone's hair is different. Some people can do two weeks, and some people can barely make it two days!

I'd have to vote for daily (since we're being given an ultimatum. LOL.).

I voted every 2 weeks.

Daily washing wrecked havoc on my hair...breakage, dryness, and tangles galore!

Im torn.

I think if there were twins with the same type of hair ect. ect., they both used the same products daily and on wash days ect.---One washed daily, the other every 2 weeks that the one that washed every 2 weeks would have longer hair, and the one that washed daily would have healtheir hair.

If i had to choose--I would wash every 2 weeks so that i could get less breakage....probally spray my hair with water daily and clean my scalp with something

I really don't know. I've never tried daily washing unless I was at the beach often. I know I wash 1x-2x a week. I know that I really can't go longer than a week without washing my hair. And I know that from all reports my hair looks and feels thicker, longer and healthier but what works for me might not necessarily work for someone else.

I still feel like my hair is healthy and relatively clean from washing every 2 weeks. My hair and scalp doesn't get all dirty and stinky from not washing often. Plus, its just more convenient for me, I don't have time to wash my hair daily or more often than every 2 weeks.

Every 2 Weeks is the way to go!!! My hair grows very nicely. Washing too often causes problems and thin hair. I also have thick hair.

Me too actually :yep:

I wear cornrows for 2 weeks sometimes, and when i take them down, my hair seems to actually be stronger, healthier, more lustrious (sp) even.

Its just when i do it for along time, my ends need to be trimmed. (which is not a bad thing, ends should probally be trimmed 2-4x a year, while i've been growing my hair out though i've only been trimming like 1x a year)

With washing alot, my hair breaks before i can even trim it LOL, it does tangle horribly too.---But my ends never feel dry or start looking alittle scraggly

My hair or scalp doesnt make any oders either (but i avoid the sun, and i dont excercise...what do you do about sweat?)---i massage my scalp (and smell my fingers :look::nono:) afterwards all the time thats how i know lol

Weekly is it for me. Being natural, I have to keep the moisture level up. A shampoo or co-wash is the only way I know how to do that while keeping the product build up at bay.

I know I need to wash when hair has no movement or swing= too much product on hair.

I have to say every 2 weeks, I have been doing this for the past 2 months or so, and I have retained the most during this period. I just use oil with astringent property the week between my washes. This is coming from some that has washed bi-weekly since joining this board.
I wish I started this earlier, wont be washing earlier than a week any more, thats for sure.
Edit- I think the manipulation during detangling session. low mani really works

I wash my hair every 1-2 weeks now. I don't have the time to wash my hair daily. My hair is not dirty, and it has never impeded my growth. My daily scalp massages and exercise helps with stimulation. Minimal product usage probably has a lot to do with it too.
