Low Manipulation Challenge/hangout 2018 (braidouts, Twistouts, Bantu Knot-outs, Rollersets, Etc.)

I had to leave town for a funeral and didn't get a chance to wash my hair before I left. Thankfully, my wash n go from last Sunday is still going strong, which surprised me. My family keeps complimenting my hair, so I need to do long term wash n goes more often.

To maintain at night, I band the right front section with a cut headband and band the rest in the back in two sections with two Satin scrunched each. I've used water (shower) or a water spritz with oil and a little leave-in to moisturize each day.

I keep trying to upload pictures, but I get an error. When I get home, I'll just post to my blog and upload that way.

:clap:

I can't wait to see pics!

I had to download a photo resizer app and reduce my photo size to something like 75% before I was able to upload a photo.

bumping! Any weekend hair plans?
I am under the dryer now with a braid and curl (flexirods at the end). i'm going out of town so hopefully i get stretched, moisturized hair that lasts at least till sunday.

:wave:

Hi, chica!

I'm still here.

My next goal regarding wng's was to see if layering Shea butter beneath my HG Bronner Brothers gel would work to prevent a dry-feeling wash and go.

So last night I did the following:
  • Prepoo and funnel detangle with Shea Moisture hipo masque. (It felt soooooooo great to FULLY, FULLY detangle.)
  • Cleanse with Naturalicious clay wash.
  • Skipped conditioning and defining my curls with DevaCurl Decadence One Condition. (I should not have done that, I don't think.)
  • Worked Jakeala Shea Amla Parfait from root to tip. (In retrospect, I probably should have only applied it to my hair's ends. :()
  • Shingled Bronner Brothers Firm Hold Curling Gel from root to tip.
So, I ran into all kinds of issues. Right after I finished applying product, DH decided to be romantic, and so my hair only partially survived. So I tried to repair it. I did pretty good, but it did not dry overnight. Further, only my ends were ever defined (even before the romance.)

I tried tension blow drying it this morning since it was not fully dry.

I don't know, you guys. I think I have a fro in some places and a wash and go in other places.

Mom is not too impressed with it. Lol. She's trying to be kind.

I'll either turn this into a twist out for church Sunday or try again with the Shea butter on my ends only. :smile:

Oh well. At least I gained knowledge.

This weekend, I’ll be untwisting my currently bunned two strand twists
  1. Washing with kinky curly come clean;
  2. Then, a henna hibiscus mix;
  3. Deep conditioning with Deva Curl Heaven in Hair and heat cap;
  4. Oil rinsing my ends- only the ends, as much as possible- with Naptural85s oil mix;
  5. Cool hair dryer to take off most of the excess water before two big brists across the front with a bun in the back.
Two twists/braids to bun is easier to deal with being in and out of the gym all week.
And that’s it!

Here is the whipped Shea butter + Bronner Brothers gel wash and go. It's not my favorite, it needs reshaping at the ends, but it's okay, and I'm rocking it. :smile:

I like it. You may have to redo it sooner or remix the style to avoid tangles but it looks good.

To touch on what my @Faith said, my hair used to react this way too. I applied my Shea mix root to tip in most spots last night and my hair didn't lose definition. I think the pH of my gel (as the final step) is what can also give a helping hand. I noticed that anything above a pH 5 would make my hair appear fuller and less defined like this.

Helpful, sis. Thanks!

My wash and go will always shrink up like crazy in to a cury/wavy frederick Douglass fro. I wish there was a easy to prevent this.

What's your curl pattern?

I feel you and can relate: My APL hair also shrinks majorly. Up to my nose, into a fro.

Technique didn't matter, product combination didn't matter . . . but product+technique did.

Perhaps you "simply" need to keep experimenting until you find the unique product+technique that works well for you. (I know it's not simple, lol.)

CWK sells these wash-and-go elongators that I feel could work for some of us, but they just won't respond to my emails or texts.

I agree with this completely re product + technique.

Can you please show us a link of these elongators?

I'm 4b.

I washed out the not-so-great wash and go this morning, wore my hair in a DC-saturated puff all day, and then did a new wash and go tonight.

Steps, products, and technique:
  1. Prepoo and detangle: SM hipo masque and KareCo Tangle Buster Brush
  2. Cleanse: Malibu C Hard Water Shampoo
  3. Condition and define coils: DevaCurl Decadence One Condition
  4. Seal ends: Jakeala Shea Amla Parfait
  5. Shingle gel from root to tip, concentrating on roots: Bronner Brothers Firm Hold Curling Gel
  6. Shake head
  7. Air dry (still doing)
  8. Tension blow dry to elongate (will do tomorrow morning)

Ecostyler with oil added to prevent too much crunch

Have you tried Eco Styler without oil? Oil under my gel increases shrinkage for me, so I just use a really good leave in and skip oil.

Also, do you rake? Shingle? Combo? If I use a thick gel, like Eco, I have to shingle. With snot-like gels, I can rake and go because they spread easily throughout my strands without much effort.

Actually.. I shingle!

I did a bun for a few days because I was just so busy but I redid my set last night. A braid and curl with flexirods on the end. I had to go back to the set because buns are just not that healthy of a hairstyle for me at this length-I don't like that tugging on my edges.

I am in an experimentation phase right now with my hair, trying to find a weekly signature style.
Here's how this came out: 10 braids with red flexirods at the end. The only product was almond jai butter from Camille rose. The back is to my liking and personal taste (fluffy, curls) the front looks like....:look: nah. I set it for a side part but I really want the curly fro bang look right now. So I am going to set again tonight, plus I want to try my new DC anyways.

I'm going to try an adaptation of the method and style below.

I don't know if the plan below will work to achieve comparable results. It's a complete experiment.
  1. Cleanse: Soultanicals ayurvedic poo bar (discontinued)
  2. Detangle: Curl Junkie Repair Me
  3. Balancing DC: Curl Junkie Repair Me under microwaveable thermal cap
  4. Heat protectant: Texture ID Foam (from Sally's)
  5. Ends care: Jakeala Shea Amla Parfait
  6. Blow dry serum: Fantasia IC whatever-whatever
  7. Blow dry: Lescolton paddle brush dryer
  8. Twist butter/crème/gel: ??? Bronner Brothers Firm Hold Curling Gel for the strong, week-long hold???

I’m going to test the out with you this weekend
Clay wash
DC with TGIN honey Shea (maybe)
Detangling brush with TJ tea tree conditioner
Leave-in lightly applied SM curl milk ( Sally’s version)
Argan oil (but I’m strongly leaning to buy CHI silk infusion instead ) or PM supper skinny serum?
Style in 3 flat twists/ braids instead
