All Nurses, pharmacists, doctors, etc...lets talk MN

If you do not have a medical background, you might not get this post....:ohwell:

I'm an RN and I was at work the other day, thinking about how I am going to start incorporating MN in my regimen (I bc'ed the other day). I was thinking to myself about the reported headaches people are getting while using this on their scalp. So I thought to myself.....
(1)Maybe these headaches are caused my vasodilation due to the nitrates in MN. We all know that nitrates cause headaches.

(2) Also I was thinking, is it the nitrate in MN causing the growth or is it the yeast killing properties of the miconazole?? The vasodilation of the nitrates could be causing increased blood flow to the scalp, resulting in increased hair growth ??? If that is the case, wow, what would nitropaste do on the scalp (I would not do this )

And last but not least.....Could something as simple as a coke (caffeine) ease the headache? We all know that caffeine vasoconstricts.

These are my thoughts. Tell me what you think.

Not a Doc, nor do I play one on TV, BUT what you say makes sense. I'm sure others will post later. Sundays are sometimes a rough time to obtain responses.

I had these same thoughts!!! Glad to see other healthcare workers on the same wavelength! I am a pharmacist and I tried the MN...got sores within 2 weeks of use, nothing really bad though..not sure if it was from the other ingred in the cream, the other stuff I mixed it with, from the miconazole (not allergic to antifungals), or the increased blood flow to the scalp...I also got a mild headache. It worked though... I might try it again, this time using different co-ingredients.

I think coke (cola) would work to decrease the headache, who knows, maybe you will build up a tolerance eventually, I haven't tried it long enough to know.

I also wonder if MN does this, what would Viagra do??!! LOL! Also, I did some other research on nitric oxide increasing vits...and Arginine, the amino acid, works like Viagra to prolong sexual stim and muscle pump in men after they work out.... I wondered, will it do the same for hair growth since all it is doing is causing the vasodilation to get these effects???
So, of course, I bought some recently...haven't used it enough to get results, or even a headache...will update when I have more to go on.

Hmm...that is interesting. My husband uses N.O. explode when he works out. It is basically an N.O supplement with alot of B vitamins and amino acids to aid in building muscle. What if I made a paste of this stuff and placed it on my scalp. (I think that is going to far) But dang, i wish I could experiment on someone who didn't care if their hair fell out :spinning:

I think we might be getting carried away by the word "Nitrate". Not everything with nitrate in the name cause vasodilation, we can't just start putting silver nitrate on our scalps and expecting the hair to grow.

The nitrates that cause vasodilation are the NO based copounds, and Miconazole is not one of them. If it does work, its not because of the "Nitrate" in the name

OP. It's not a good thing for "authentic" medical professionals to dispense medical advice online. They can be sued for giving advice on MN for your scalp if something happens to you. Because MN is not made for that purpose, it's not wise to suggest a reason why you've developed a certain symptom because of it.

If you call your Doctor or a Pharmacist, they are just gonna tell you not to use that on your scalp. Because it's not made for that purpose, who knows what the immediate or long term side, or after effects will be.

No one is giving medical advice here. Just spitting out random thoughts dear. That is why this "authentic " medical professional clearly stated ( I would not do this) in my statement.

Well I apologize if I'm wrong, dear. But I thought that was why you were calling medical professionals in.

And this is EXACTLY why I don't post much...because people always want to take things way tooooo serious when it was specifically stated that it was just "talk." Does someone ALWAYS have to put up a disclaimer just so they can be the "voice of reason." Do we ALWAYS have to censor our convo because someone, usually an adult, might take it and run with it and make the attempt? We do understand that making that attempt is their decision and theirs alone, right? Geez!

OP, if you wanna continue this light, non-journal worthy convo, PM me...UGH! :wallbash:

I have learned so much from this board, but sometimes I just can't take it....:nono:

OP, please don't let one poster bully you into silence. I find your thoughtful medical discussion interesting, even though I don't use MN. I won't name names of course, but I believe there are those on this board that spoil for a fight or are just plain bullies. We just had eight years of anti-intellectual leadership, but now the light has once again shone on thinking people. The trickle down theory didn't work economically, but one can still hold out hope that it can still work intellectually.

arrrgh :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash: Sounded like a good general discussion to me! I don't see anywhere where medical advice was offered, just opinions on how MN may work and anectodes. This place sometimes!!!! Another rule to add to the list:

Medical professionals shall not discuss their opinions using their medical knowledge on this board! :lachen::rolleyes:

Um, well, if this discussion is still going on, I am a nurse...and being a nurse I long ago decided against MN. For one, I don't believe in using medications without necessity. And MN is about as unnecessary as it gets.

Also, with the overuse of yeast infection creams encourages fungus to become stronger and more resistant to meds. I wonder if it would do the same on the scalp and cause problems?

Believe me, I did consider during those early BC days, but guess what, my hair did grow and it's still growing without MN.

Anyway, OP, if you're still reading this thread, congrats on your BC and I hope the MN works out for you!

Huh (at bolded)???? When I read this, I did NOT get the impression that she was giving "medical advice". I even went back to read the original post (three times).

Wow.:nono:

I wouldn't necessarily call this advice. IMHO.

Please carry on with the convo...I am very interested to see where your heads are on this MN issue.

There is no board.

I'm a pharmacist....Interesting thoughts. Headaches happen to be a minor side effect of MN so you may be onto something. If it does in fact cause some sort of weak vasodilatation it would be negligible.

Nitropaste is a trinitrate and has way more potent vasodilation properties than dinitrates and mononitrates. I would not advise putting this on your head.

ETA: There are some reports on this board from women that have experiened headaches after using certain tea rinses with caffeine in their hair btw.
