Easy Rollersetting/Pincurl Challenge Part II
Starting: July 7, 2008
Ending: September 6, 2008

This is a continuation of for our rollersetting/pincurling practices.

The objective of this challenge is, hair maintenance, hair retention and to create professional finished styles with No Bumps, or Fuzzies, but SMOOTH & BOUNCY HAIR. (It is more difficult than you think)

This challenge is for anyone and is designed to allow everyone to work with other challenges.

In this challenge, we are going to focus on our technique:
  • ROLLERSET/PINCURL 1X PER WEEK (Wet or Misted) Use the best method that is not going to cause your hair to break, shed, or dryout.
  • WASH & DC 1X PER WK.
  • CW at least 1X PER WEEK and follow your normal routine and challenges.
  • Report to the forum at least once every 2 weeks and report a learning experience on your hairs behavior.
  • Maintain your rollerset until your next co-wash. After your co-wash wear your hair in a protective style until your next rollerset/pincurl.
  • You cannot use a comb AT ALL when you first remove your rollerset and are setting your style. Use your fingers. (Soft brush, optional (if you must).
  • Try all options twice: Rollerset and Pincurl at least 2 times during this challenge. Example 1 if you prefer to rollerset than you must try pincurling at least twice. If you prefer to pincurl, than you must try a rollerset at least twice during this challenge. Example 2. Two Wet Sets and Two Misted Sets (Which one do you like best)
DRYING:
HOOD/BONNET, OR AIR DRY wet rollerset, pincurl

I have had success with air drying, but it’s not for everybody. It can also take a very very very long time to dry if you have thick hair IMO. Make sure you have enough time to allow your hair to dry.
Test different things to find out what your hair responds to. For example, try sitting under the dryer until your hair is mostly dry, then let it air dry the rest of the way.

(LOW MANIPULATION AND NO COMBING)

You have to finger comb you remove your rollers so be creative with your styles.

Example: Messy Updo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xZWg5l998o&feature=related, (This is who I look at many times for my hair training) I know that there are other ones so please share them.

Remember what works for you may work for someone else so post your findings.
Also, remember that what worked for somebody else may not work for you.

When in doubt do a patch test.
Want to try something new?
Find a discreet section on your head and try the technique, before you do on your entire head.

You can use a soft or boar bristle brush sparingly and if you are wrapping your head to flatten the style new growth, or wrapping to go to bed. All other times you can finger comb. At other times, you can use a very very soft brush like a (baby brush) to lay down them flyaways, and to keep it looking neat. If you do not have a boar bristle brush, try one they are wonderful for smoothing and wrapping hair b4 bed.

Again, on this challenge (NO BLOWFRYERS, NO FLAT IRONING), but if you must you cannot use a comb, or a brush. Separate your hair with your fingers and use on your roots ONLY w/the attachment to focus on that area only.

Post a starting picture.
Taking pictures and posting is optional during this challenge, but I hope that you can find the time to share at least one. At the END of this challenge, I want you to post your worse and best rollerset for the 3-months.

Ps some of the hairstyling tips are shown with longer hair, to express how to do a specific style. Many of these same styles and techniques can be variated on hair that is shorter.
Use only techniques that are good for your hair type.

Styling Tools

Choosing Rollers and Curlers

There are many types of rollers, both non-heated and heated. They all vary in length and width -- a wide diameter gives a full, smooth curl, while a thin roller gives a tight, spiral-type curl.

When using non-heated rollers, set your hair before taking a shower: The steam will help set the curls for a long lasting style. And never wind rollers too tightly, or you could end up with hair loss.

Magnetic rollers add smooth curl and volume. Because they are used to set wet hair, they offer long lasting curl.

Velcro rollers provide soft curl and full body, and can be used on either damp or dry hair. These are good choices for short or fine hair and hair that breaks easily, since they don't need to be clipped in place. However, if your hair is long or thick, you might need to use clips to keep Velcro rollers in place.

Foam rollers give curl to fragile hair and are best used when your hair is dry; they're even soft enough to sleep on.

Snap-on rollers and brush rollers hold hair securely, but they can damage your hair and are therefore not usually recommended.

Plastic mesh rollers are best used on wet hair. They help hair dry quickly and create smooth curls.

Flexi-rods and hair twirlers are long, flexible cushioned rods designed to create spiral curls without the use of pins or clips.

(Definitely Off limits)Hot rollers and steam rollers, available in a variety of diameters, are used on dry hair to create long lasting curl and minimize frizz. Both types are less damaging to hair than irons. Hot rollers are faster to use -- you have to wait for steam rollers to dry before taking them out. However, steam rollers are the gentlest way to get soft, full curls. When using either type of heated rollers, carefully wrap small sections of hair, making sure the ends
tucked in.

I'm in I'm in! It will be difficult during the summer but rollersetting has helped my hair tremendously so I'll be back on. I'm getting relaxed next week so I will post my starting pic around that time.

Count me in! I need to learn how to pin curl. Does anyone use the Nairobi Wrapp-It Shine foaming lotion? Does it make hair hard?

Are we allowed to silk wrap?
Also, are alternative rollers allowed such as mesh rollers and spoolies (these are used to make pin curls)?

This is really good. I tried it on the last challenge and my relaxed hair just couldnt take it.

Absolutely, just no rollers in which heat is required on the roller and also "prefer" not to use the foam rollers as they can cause breakage if not used properly.
I have no experience with silk wrapping. Id like to know more.

This is great. Your hair is going to be in really good condition. Are you incorporating a growth aid or applying anything to your scalp to see if you can get more growth?

Count me in please.

I rollerset once a week but i have a problem with my hairline right now....have....to...put...the ...brush...down.....:nono:. This challenge will be good for me.

I notice we are not allowed to use a comb at all - not even when wet to put the rollers in. I thought the hair had to be as smooth as possible for a good rollerset?

No sweetie, you can use a comb to put your rollers in but not when you take them out. I don't think I would be able to get a great style that way. Thank you for joining the challenge and I will get you added to the list.

My lazy streak will prolly be over in about 3 more weeks or so.

Oh shucks. I wanted to do it but I'd have to co-wash once a week and co-washing hates me. :nono: I also live in an area with extremely hard water and I don't have a shower.

I am in!:yawn:This challenge is just in time since I had to wash my hair today and have a week old touch-up.I have had a love/hate relationship with rollersets but I am going to make this work. I followed the first link in the second post and the rolling part went sooooooo much betta! I hood dried it for 45 min and I will let it airdry the rest of the day. I know the results will be better than in the past.

I'm in! I just did a ponytail rollerset today. I was going to saran wrap and sit under the dryer but since I am not going anywhere I decided to just pincurl the ends until tomorrow.

Just took down my second rollerset of the challenge.. Handling this new growth (esp because it's coming in thick at the roots) is a huge struggle.:wallbash: Pictures soon.

I am going to have to drop out of this challenge. Very convenient timing for my Gold N Hot dome dryer to blow up on me :wallbash:

Is it possible for me to rejoin later? I should I wait for another rollersetting/pincurling challenge? Sorry :(

For those who are interested in silk wraps, here's pokahontas' tutorial;

Silk Wrap Tutorial Updated 08'......straight hair w/o heat!

If you want straight hair without the use of direct heat (flat irons, blow dryers, etc.) you should definitely try this out. My hair is natural and it gets very straight with this method.

Here are the steps (I will try to have a pic for each step):

1) Rollerset your hair using whatever size roller you prefer.

2) Dry the set under a hooded dryer (or air-dry).

3) Once completely dry comb out the set and apply a small amount of moisturizer and a couple drops of oil for shine. Don't overdo it with the products because you want your hair to be light and swingy.

4) Wrap your hair.

5) Cover with one layer of saran wrap (make sure the top is closed).

6) Sit under a hooded dryer for 10-15 minutes. This step is where the magic happens, lol. I don't know how this happens but the hair just straightens and silkens out so beautifully it's like magic.

HTH!
