NATURALS: ROLLERSETTING Challenge!!!!!!!

OMG..I soo wanna do this. I'll have to come back and read. Are there any tips for coily 4a's??? When I tried to rollerset, I couldn't get my hair to stay straight and wrap around the roller. :nono:
I have the same issue. If you read back a couple of pages, you will see the kind of rollers I use.
I am also thinking of buying curl formers, I think they might work well too.

I have mostly 4b hair, so getting a smooth set is very hard.

I think it might get better once my hair is longer.

OK, I am trying to figure out how to section and roll my hair. I have a TWA that is getting close to a medium sized one. Also, do I have to put any setting lotion or styling foam on wet hair? Thank you for offering your assistance!:rosebud: Is anyone using the mohawk roller set method? Am I asking too many questions?:lachen: I am very excited at trying this because I think I need more variety with my hair.

What size roller are you using? Also, now while your hair is shorter is a GREAT time for you to master roller setting your hair. This way your will have it perfected once you hit your hair length goal. If you have not done so already, I suggest you get 3 diff sizes to start. The yellow, green and pink.

Let me see if I can find some pics.

ETA: Below are the Diane Snap on rollers. I own all of them except the blue ones. I always had the purple. But once I cut my relaxed ends 3 yrs ago I went out and got the smaller sizes. I still use them depending on what type of style I want to achieve.

Well I've finally perfected my rollersetting regimen
-I know what dilutions to use for a firmer set, a looser set (which is what I prefer)
-I also know what products work best, but I may do some tweaking here and there.
-My results are consistent and I'm finally able to put the rollers in an 1 hour to 1 hr 10 mins. compared to my previous 2 :lachen:

This rollerset wasn't the most flawless in terms of application but it was definitely the softest and the easiest to comb out. My curls also came out well, but I prefer to rollerset for straightness so that I can manage my hair more easily during the school week.

I assembled and used my new dryer for this rollerset. Honestly, when DCing, it didn't feel all that powerful. BUT, when I got under to dry my rollerset, I was done in about 45-55 minutes! And I didn't even have it on the highest temp setting (I set it on about 65 degrees out of 80 degrees). I couldn't believe it! The heat and air flow distribution is very even and I didn't feel any hot spots. My hair feels soft and not hard in some spots where my hair over-dried like with my tabletop dryer.

-This has cut my total styling time down from about 3-4 hours down 2-2.5 hours from start to finish!:yay::yay::yay:

Ladies, your rollersets look great :gorgeous:.

After reading this thread, you ladies inspired me to try roller setting. I loved using my curlformers, but I out grew them and passed them along.

Thanks to Momi:bighug:, I now have my hard mesh rollers and I did my first rollerset. I think my hair turned out alright. I will post pics later.

see pics here:http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=339057

Thanks again ladies, keep up the good work!!!! :waytogo:

AngellDoll, your hair is so beautiful!
Do you have any recent pictures?

I did wet ponytails for a few days and noticed... to my horror.. that I accidentally ripped the ponytail holder out of my hair and my 13 inches of hair is now like 1". That was just one tiny area in the middle. I said oh hell no... :-( I rollerset my hair, air dried and put it in a ponytail. I think I will alternate between rollersetting & flatironing, rollersetting & just wearing it in a ponytail. Its less manipulation for me and I won't worry about heat so much.

I will buy some ouchless ponytail holders this weekend.

Thank you. I will have to try and find some recent pictures.

I am so sorry that you ripped your hair out, thank God it was only a tiny section. I never tried to set my hair in ponytails because I thought it would take too long to dry. I will be alternating between rollersetting and bunning and I will flat iron maybe twice a year.

Hi, newbie here. I have been lurking for a few months and joined last week.

Can I join or is it too late? I have been roller setting consistently for about a month straight. At home one week at at the salon the next week. I use the softer mesh rollers. I have just BSS tabletop hooded dryer, but I really want to invest in the one from salons r us. Just trying to hype myself up to buy it.

I have been wearing the curls and rolling them on satin sponge rollers at night. I will post pics next week when I wash again. I have been having a problem with the curls in the back knotting up occassionally. I have been using coconut oil to mosturize.

I need to get in on this. I am not where I want to be in terms of length, surely because my WNGs aren't low-mani, and when I rollerset yesterday my ends looked so horrible that I washed it out today. I JUST TRIMMED like last month! :wallbash:

ETA: uh...so when i saw this thread i got so excited that i forgot i'm getting box braids in the next week or two (as in, whenever i get the stamina to braid my hair for 3 days straight). i will do this until then, cause there were NO TANGLES in my hair when i washed out that rollerset.

No problem at all - glad to be of some help.

Can't wait to see pics!

What's everyone using to moisturize your ends between sets?

Right now I use Hairveda Avosoya oil at night before I pin curl my hair. In the morning I use Shescentit's Seyani Hair Butter (its sheabutter) on my ends. It keeps my hair VERY moisturized, but not greasy. I'll use coconut oil in the spring.

I never tried to set my hair in ponytails because I thought it would take too long to dry. I will be alternating between rollersetting and bunning and I will flat iron maybe twice a year.

I don't set my hair in ponytails for the same reason. I meant that I rollerset my hair, air dry (takes HOURS) and then brush it out and put it in a ponytail. This is what I do to give my hair a break from heat.

Welcome! Of course you can join!!! :drunk:

I forgot to post my regimen. I may adjust the technique eventually but this is what I did for my first roller set.

Mind you this was hair spa night.

1. Coconut milk prepoo
2. shampoo bar poo.
3. DC
4. Tea Rinse (would omit next time)
5. More conditioner because hair tangled
6. Ready to roller set
7. Triple part front to back method
8. Used mostly magnetic clip pink, brown, and purple rollers.
9. Part hair sections for rolling. Make sure it's detangled with fine tooth comb.
9.5 Add proclaim wrap foam and vatika frosting to each piece.
10. **** This step may be unsuitable for LHCF viewers****
Brush with one stroke, smoothing each piece once.
11. Roll each section, smooth the ends around the roller and keep it taut.
12. I have a soft bonnet dryer. It was really late so I dried my hair for 1 &
1/2 hours. Then I fell asleep (yes I can sleep in hard rollers)
13. Took down rollers in the AM.
14. Voila!!!

**Before I went natural, I used metal clips, but it was much easer to use the snap on covers this time.

Your tutorial helped me get this roller set thing down pat. I had never considered rolling the rollers forward. I thought it would make a crazy curl pattern. I was wrong. Even though I don't have a hooded dryer, your technique definitely gives me a nice result. As soon as I master how to posts pic within a thread I will post them. I have done 3 roller sets in the last 2 weeks. :spinning:

Next time maybe try it with switching steps 3 and 4. It may not tangle, and you won't have to add more conditioner.

I'm so happy I could help . I can't wait to see pics- I bet it turned out lovely. Once you get a hooded dryer it will be ON! I've been one rollersetting fool since I got mine and can now dry my hair much more quickly. It doesn't hurt that I've gotten faster at rolling my hair either

I posted pics of my last rollerset in this thread I made:

Hi Ladies,
Here is my latest rollerset...This was done with less Lottabody & more water; I also ran out of castor oil & used coconut instead in my setting lotion mix. My results were just OK...

2009_02150017.jpg

I use various sized magnetic rollers.

My hair had loads of texture...which is what I prefer.

..& here is the previous roller set. I was completely pleased with these results. I think the tsp of castor oil in my setting lotion makes a huge difference:

Rollersetting gets easier each time I do it. It takes me about 45 mins to set my hair & i'm sure i'll cut down on that time with continued practise.

No more roller sets until April for me! I'm back in full PS mode with my skinny plaits:yep:
